Put on your sneakers and come do some Gy'alipettes in Faucigny 🤸, just steps away from the Swiss border 🇨🇭.
In the month of June, tie your shoelaces and head towards Haute-Savoie. You're about to frolic among marmots, chamois, and bearded vultures 🦅. Don't worry, the beard is only mandatory for birds, not for you! ✅ The "La Gypaète" association organizes its eponymous trail for a new edition, open to the general public, offering 5 courses for all levels. From 14 km up to 76 km, the circuits will make you discover and suffer 😈. Races take place during the day, and you can see the mountains in all their splendor 😍. Keep your eyes wide open; with a bit of luck, you might spot a few patches of snow. Not enough for skiing or sledging down sledging, but enough to make you smile and forget about your tired legs. With peaks over 1,900 meters, you'll have a breathtaking view of the surroundings and the valley below 👀.
As for the courses, the organization wanted to please everyone 😎. Beginners can line up at the start of the 14.5 km. Beware though, watch the clock: 700 mD+ for 14.5 km is no joke ❌. It will make a significant first experience. Just a notch above, you'll find the 31 km ☝ course. And we know we'll make some happy by announcing that the distance can be done in duo. Yes, you can bring along your buddy or your partner for the adventure and kill two birds with one stone by reducing the duration of the effort at the same time 🧠. Frankly, you have no excuse not to sign up. From now on, we're talking about experienced trailers: 45, 57, and 76 km with a fairly condensed elevation will require preparation on your part 🏋️♂️. And when we talk about preparation, we're not just talking about watching all the trail movies you can find 🎬, but really getting your legs moving 2 to 3 times a week 🏃. The 45 and the 57 km are perfect to test yourself before committing to the 76 km next year ⭐️. Because we know you, you'll surely utter the words "never again," "what am I doing here," "it makes no sense to run," but you'll sign up for an even crazier challenge just 48 hours later 🗣️. And if you've already passed that stage and want to commit to the queen distance of 76 km this year, then prepare to climb mountains (and that's not just a figure of speech...) 🏔️. As its name suggests, you will connect 3 lakes, with over 4,700 mD+ in total 🥱. It tires us just to talk about it. Plus, for this course, you start at 4:30 a.m. ⏰ (when everyone is still asleep), you'll see the mountain wake up... and maybe even set if you linger on the Savoyard trails 👀.
Once you arrive in Savoie, take advantage of testing the culinary specialties. We warn you, you're going to gain back all the pounds you just lost 😵. In case you didn't know, the area is highly renowned for its cheeses. Raclette cheese, reblochon or Emmental de Savoie, there's a flavor and aroma for everyone 🧀. We hope you have a strong nose because it's going to be intense! 👃 If you prefer to see the landscape rather than the plate's bottom 🍽️, you can let your desires run wild. To the south, Annecy and its famous idyllic setting await you to hike at your leisure, or simply drift on a pedal boat 🚣♂️. To continue your tour of the region's lakes, travel a good forty minutes 🚗 and park near the beaches of Bourget-du-Lac. This vast stretch of water, glacier-born 🧊, is the deepest French lake in the country. However, if France holds no more secrets for you, or you simply want to conquer new forests 🌳, cross the border and visit our Swiss friends. You'll quickly find your way to Geneva and its stunning Lake Geneva. Indeed, you'll see more lakes in a few days than you've seen in your entire life 😳.
A final reminder in case you skimmed through: be sure to bring your best swimsuit and a sturdy nose clip if you have sensitive nostrils 😬. Everything else comes down to your legs 🦵.
Message from the organizer:
"The Trail of the Bearded Vulture welcomes runners of different levels on courses ranging from 14 to 77 km. Come discover the charm of the villages of Faucigny by running one of the proposed races! The Trail of the Bearded Vulture is a mountain race and takes place 95% on trails."
Once you arrive in Marnaz, precisely on rue de la Crosaz, you'll realize the adventure you've embarked on... No turning back now ❌, you've signed up for quite a race 🏃. But "don't worry, be happy", determination and the beauty of the landscapes will push you to go all the way!
After a start at full speed, spreading over more or less 9 km, and 80 mD+, catch your breath and launch into the first mountains you'll encounter for a steep climb of 1,000 mD+ that will take you to Brion. As it sounds, it might seem daunting for what's next 😨, but no worries, this is the hardest slope of the track! Then let your legs flow on a gentle slope (all things considered), until you reach the Refueling of Reposoir 🚰. However, no time to rest, you're only at the second refueling, and there are 4 more to cross before you see the finish line. Plus, the Refueling of Chinaillon, located some 15 km further, awaits you before 11:30 am, so don't drag your feet 🐾.
Once this first part of the race is behind you, head to the viewpoint of l'Aiguille Verte. But like any respectable viewpoint, this one has to be earned 🏞️. In 5 km, you'll tackle 700 mD+ 🫨. Push further to the second lake: Lake Lessy, and take a break at 2/3 of the course, at the Solaison Refueling. At this point, you'll have 54 km under your belt, and only 22 more to go, so it's not the time to give up 😎.
Among the last notable points, you'll have a few seconds of respite to catch your breath at the viewpoint of Pointe d'Andey, and you'll cross Lake Bénit at km 70 ⛵️. Once Marnaz is in sight again, it means you're dangerously close to the finish and the hot meal 🥵. Use all the energy you have left, and leave your pursuers in the final stretch! ➡️
We have two pieces of news for you: one good and one bad. The good news is that 57 km is almost 20 km less than on the Trail of the 3 Lakes💦. The bad news is that you still have 57 to go, and they will wear you out as they should 😬.
The start is given at Le Reposoir, at the level of the 2nd refreshment station on the 76 km course 🍽️. For the rest, the course is identical. Except for the Lac du Carmel, you will see almost the same landscapes but will suffer less (on paper 📄). L'Aiguille Verte, the Lac de Lessy, the Pointe d'Andey, and the Lac Bénit will be a feast for your eyes 👀.
Once you have the Marathon on the road under your belt 🛣️, line up for a marathon distance with 2,500 mD+. You'll see, the effort is not at all the same, yet the distance doesn't change 😌.
As with the Trail des Gypaètes course, you'll start at the Reposoir, for an ascent of 800 mD+. Maintain your pace as you cross the Col de la Colombière, the Aiguille Verte, and the Lac de Lessy. Don't stop for a dip 🤿, the race continues 👀. Once you've crossed the Col de Sosay and the Col de Cenise, you'll turn at La Combe, saving yourself 15 km extra. From there, just over a dozen kilometers to go before the finish 🏁. Finish with your mind, and enjoy the applause of the crowd a few meters from the line 👏.
Now, all you have to do is compare your time to your PR on a classic Marathon. Normally, it should be slightly higher, otherwise, you have a great margin for improvement on the road 😬.
The 31 km of the Short-toed Eagle is the same as the Bargy Marathon, but even shorter! 🏃
You will start at the level of Chinaillon's refreshment point, just before the big climb of the Aiguille Verte 🏔️. The rest of the course is identical, with a passage at Lake Lessy and Lake Bénit 🐟.
On the Short-toed Snake Eagle pair version, you can share the distance and the efforts ⛓️💥. Choose the part of the course that interests you the most, and lift your team up ⬆️.
The ideal course to venture into trail running. An accessible distance and breathtaking landscapes, how can you not fall in love with the discipline? 😍
