If you love both long walks by the sea by the sea and rugged altitude trails deep in the mountains ๐ชจ, the Trail delle Streghe will surely appeal to you ๐. Located about a hundred kilometers from the southern France and the Monegasque empire ๐ฒ๐จ, this event takes place on the Italian coast, in the county of Savona ๐งผ. However, it's not about foam parties here, but about trail running and running ๐. The events take place between Spotorno and Noli, two towns in the larger region of Liguria ๐ฎ๐น, where, among other things, you'll find the Ligurian Sea ๐ก. Yes, the water is turquoise and the landscapes are stunning, but let's talk about the race ๐.
The organizers have planned "classic" trail running and quirky quirks for you ๐ณ. On the "classic but beautiful" side, there's a "Witches' Marathon" of 44 km and 1,915 mD+ . If you're a true marathoner, you've probably shuddered at the words "marathons" and "44 km", but don't fret ๐ฑ; we know there are 2 extra kilometers compared to the official distance ๐ฎโ๐จ. The key thing to remember is the almost 2,000 mD+, which will wipe you out. The "30 km wall" won't be the only wall you risk encountering, if you see what I mean โฆ ๐งฑ. Then, you'll find a 17 km with an additional 750 mD+. Between Spotorno and Noli, you'll navigate through the Ligurian hinterland and see as much coastline as forested areas. There's also the 9 km and its 400 mD+ in a trail non-timed format โฑ๏ธ. Perfect for the shyest runners wishing to set themselves a major challenge โ . Also, we don't want to spoil, but the view at 246 m altitude is really nice ๐.
Regarding more original courses, there is a "Family run" format of 5 km, to be done with family or friends ๐ค. It's time to bring your buddy who keeps logging "easy runs" on Strava ๐ฒ but you've never seen actually run ๐ (and yes, we all have one in our entourage), or to push your partner to test themselves in the discipline. The second course we recommend trying while spaces last is the "TDS vertical" ๐. For this event, you should prepare your glutes and thighs, it won't exactly be a "walk in the park" ๐ฅต. The concept is simple: climb the Bergeggina vertical staircase ๐ช on the seafront of Bergeggi. Between little goat-like jumps ๐, don't forget to glance back to witness the sublime scene of the vast sunlit body of water โ๏ธ. So whether you're more of a short but intense format, a long but splendid format or a shared format, you will surely find an event suited to your desires ๐.
Now that you are eager to come jogging in Spotorno ๐ (yes, we know), let us describe the landscapes ๐๏ธ. On land: small rocky mountains covered with plants typical of the south, like olive trees ๐ซ, pines ๐ฒ, lavender ๐ชป, or aloe vera. In short, a blend of gray and green that breathes sunshine and holidays ๐งณ. Turning around, you'll see these same cliffs plunging into a sea split between deep blue ๐ and bright turquoise โจ, creating ideal swimming and diving areas ๐คฟ. If you prefer rain, clouds, and deserted muddy landscapes, this trail might not be for you ๐ . However, if you decide to extend your stay in the region, you'll find there's no shortage of activities: the city of Genoa and its famous harbor ๐ข await you for colorful visits. Heading west, you can let the wind guide you and stop at any beaches that suit you. Maybe it's finally time to plan that road-trip along the Mediterranean coast that you've been mulling over for a whileโฆ ๐ญ
But now it's your turn, we'd love to help, but we're not going to sunbathe run in your place either โฑ๏ธ.
This event is intended for the most resilient runners in the pack ๐ช.
The course consists of a stunning loop starting from Spotorno and then exploring the hinterlands of the Golfo dell'Isola up to the Manie plateau ๐ซ. After 22 km, you will be at the farthest point from your starting point and will have already covered the vast majority of the 1,915 mD+ ๐ฎโ๐จ. You'll just need to turn back and head towards Noli (on a different path than on the way out), before finding at km 42 the path you took at the start of your journey ๐ฅพ.
On the trails, you'll encounter local wonders such as the castle of Noli or the ridges overlooking the coastline ๐ชผ. Be careful, though, keep an eye on the trails, as the climbs promise to be steep and the descents technical ๐. It won't be a restful weekend! ๐ด
On this course, you'll need to t-race (no pun intended)! ๐จ
Indeed, you won't want to dawdle if you aim to make the podium at the "TDS Race" ๐. The 17 km of woodland and rugged trails will be covered at full speed ๐๏ธ. Up to km 6, you'll encounter fairly steep but progressive slopes ๐ . So, you'll need to put some power into your legs if you aim to stay at the front of the pack ๐โโ๏ธ.
From km 7, the race changes and you move away from the coast to plunge into the Ligurian lands ๐ฎ๐น. The trails become more technical and the elevation gain a bit more erratic ๐ช. Once you've crossed km 12 on your watch โ๏ธ, give it your all in the last descent and pick up the pace on the last 5 kilometers, which are quite flat and smooth ๐ฃ๏ธ.
An accessible race that will introduce you to the practice, but will still require a good little dose of effort ๐ฅต.
This non-competitive format is ideal for being guided by the Italian trails without the pressure of the stopwatch and results ๐. You won't feel out of place: the route stays close to Spotorno while offering beautiful natural sections and breathtaking panoramas ๐คฉ. This way, you'll never be far from the starting or finishing buffets ๐ฝ๏ธ.
A course to be completed walking or running, depending on your preferences or those of your engaged group ๐.
The goal here is to enjoy the atmosphere and the scenery before performing ๐ฅณ. For this occasion, no stopwatch โ. The route passes through the historic heart of Spotorno, with its small streets and breathtaking views of the Ligurian Sea โด๏ธ. It's the perfect opportunity for families and children to join the celebration without risking intense effort ๐.
Attention, here we're no longer talking about the family format ๐คช.
This is the vertical challenge of the event. Plus, it takes place the day before the other trials. You can warm up on the "TDS Vertical" before tackling the more challenging routes on Sunday ๐ง. The start is given on the seaside of Bergeggi and climbs straight up to the heights ๐. With a total of 683 steps, it promises to be short but intense. You won't know if you've entered a running event or a climbing challenge โฐ๏ธ.
