"Alles hat ein Ende, nur die Wurst hat zwei" 🌭 as the famous German singer Stephan Remmler said in 1986. In case German wasn’t your first foreign language 🇩🇪, here's the translation "Everything has an end, only the sausage has two." Quite the comedian Steph', but a quote that makes perfect sense in the context of the marathon. And believe us, you'll be glad to cross just one finish line 😮💨.
Passionate about running, an architecture enthusiast 🏛️, or a lover of good wines 🍷, you'll undoubtedly find what you're looking for in the beautiful county of Lower Franconia. In the month of May, under the first rays of sunshine 🌞 of the season, the city of Würzburg welcomes you into its medieval walls for a unique running experience 🤩. Known for its cultural and artistic heritage, 5,000 runners from all over gather here each year. The Würzburg Marathon is more than just a sporting event, it's a true local celebration 🎉. More than 25 music bands will be present to cheer you on throughout the course. Whether it's snowing, raining, or windy 💨, get ready to dance, sing, and celebrate your result; the Germans know how to show hospitality, and you'll quickly notice that 😉.
Regarding more technical aspects, the organizers offer 4 distinct distances. If you're aiming for records and fame 🥇, then you can already opt for the marathon distance. The very flat course 🚗 will guide you through the city for more than 42 km over 2 rhythmic loops 🔄. Frightened by such a distance (which is totally understandable 😅)? You can also split the distance between several people and form your own Power Rangers team 🦸♂️. Just sign up for the "Relay Marathon", your legs will do the rest 🦵. You can also find a "Semi Marathon" course, allowing you to set a new PR on an official distance of 21.0975 km. For the more reserved 🙈, two shorter courses of 3 km and 10 km are also offered. Whatever your final choice, you'll wander for several kilometers through the city center, along the winding course of the Main river, and crossing the impressive German Unity Bridge and Konrad-Adenauer Bridge. But don't get too absorbed by the view and the peaceful banks, the finish line and its many refreshments await you 🏃.
Once the effort is over, it's time for relaxation and discovery 🧘. Würzburg is full of surprises and extra-sport activities 🤪, so you won't get bored. If you're more of an architecture and history fan, the Marienberg Fortress will surely captivate your heart 💓. Originally built in the year 704, it gradually improved and today represents a central piece of the city's history 🏙️. Continuing with historical visits, you can also linger at the Würzburg Residence 🏡, a former princely palace, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site 🌍. Venturing a bit outside the city, you'll find a host of trails, ideal for a post-race recovery hike 🥾. The broad fields of vineyards on the Bavarian hills offer a prime playground ✅. The city is also known for its student population, and thus the nightlife is well developed ✨. You can have just as much fun during the day as at night 🌙. Finally, if you wish to extend your vacation, head to the cities of Frankfurt 🏰 or Nuremberg, located about a hundred kilometers from the Bavarian city. These two major cities are full of marvels and monuments to visit (like the Städel Museum, Römerberg, or the Nuremberg Castle, to name just a few 📋).
So if you love music 🎶, celebration, and Germany in all its glory, get your spot for this sausage race 🎟️ now!
Message from the organizer:
"What sets our event apart is its warm and authentic atmosphere. The Würzburg Marathon is renowned for its excellent organization, its flat and scenic course through the UNESCO World Heritage old town, and the genuine appreciation shown to everyone who crosses the finish line. The Würzburg Marathon is not just a race; it's a shared experience of joy, endurance, and camaraderie in the heart of Franconia."
In the same way as for the Würzburg Half Marathon 🌆, you will pass through the key points of the city: German Unity Bridge, Zellerau District, Konrad-Adenauer Bridge, and even the Old Town District 🏃. You won't miss a bit of the wealth of history that constitutes the city. And to ensure you don't miss any monumental wonders, you can comfortably enjoy a second loop 🔁 at your cruising speed 🚢. The advantage is that you can more easily identify the tricky passages and locate yourself on the course since you will have already run the first loop ✅.
Just like for the marathon, this course will guide you through over 42 km in the historical city center 👟. Divided into six approximate sections of 7 km, everyone will run the same distance, so there will be no jealousy 🤝. If you're worried about missing out on extraordinary monuments, plan a debrief with your friends 🗣️ and take the opportunity to revisit the environments you encountered 🤩.
Through a loop of 21.0975 km, you'll discover all the most beautiful offerings of the city of Wurzburg 🤩. After a fast start from the CCW (Wurzburg Congress Center), you'll quickly reach the German Unity Bridge 🇩🇪, then enter the Zellerau district 🧱. Keep your eyes wide open, there's something beautiful to see at every corner. The route then takes you along the right bank of the river, past the Old Main Bridge 🌉 and across the Konrad Adenauer Bridge to return to the most frequented side of the city, where the party continues quietly. The music might sweep you up and make you want to move your legs to the rhythm of the instruments 🥁 rather than the rhythm of the race, but "Resist"! The course is nearing its end 🔚. You just have to cross the old town and the Frauenland and Sanderau districts, passing by several iconic monuments such as the Wurzburg Residence 🏠, St. Kilian's Cathedral, and the Juliusspital. With so much history concentrated in one place 🏛️, you'll leave with a head full of knowledge 🤯.
This 10 km very flat route will allow you to visit and perform on the same course 🎯. Stay attentive and clear-headed if you want to be able to see all the highlighted points of the perimeter ⚠️.
With its starting point located right next to the CCW, parents can kill two birds with one stone 🗿: scouting for the next day and cheering for the future generation 😉.
A race that will also start at the CCW, for a distance of 1,000 m 💨. For this distance, our best advice is to give it your all, from start to finish 😎.
A short 500 m course for budding champions 🌱. Also located in the city center, this half-kilometer route will spark the competitive spirit 🏅 of our favorite little ones, in a unique atmosphere 👶.
