If you are passionate about trail running and dream of one day participating in the legendary UTMB races in Chamonix 🏔️, you have surely heard about the UTMB® World Series and the UTMB® Index races. But what exactly is the difference between the two? 🤔 In this article, we explain simply what these races are for, what they offer, and how they fit into the UTMB system ✨.
The UTMB® World Series group all the official races of the UTMB global circuit 👋. It includes Events, accessible races at different levels across the globe, and the Majors, flagship races offering twice as many Running Stones. The Final in Chamonix, featuring the OCC, CCC, and UTMB, represents the true grail of trail running and ultra trail. The main goal of these races is to earn Running Stones, essential for the lottery for Chamonix finals. They also allow you to validate or improve your UTMB Index, though the heart of the system remains qualification via Running Stones ❤️. By participating in these races, you experience a unique adventure with demanding courses and an international trail spirit 🇪🇸🇮🇹🇵🇱, progressing towards the grand finales!
Conversely, the UTMB® Index Races are designed to assess and track your level in trail running 📈, without providing Running Stones 👆. They allow you to obtain or update your UTMB Index in four distance categories: 20K, 50K, 100K, and 100M and track your progress against other runners 🏃. Ideal for preparing for the UTMB World Series or simply for fun in testing your level, these races do not provide direct access to the finals, but having an up-to-date UTMB Index remains mandatory to participate in the UTMB system, as it certifies your performance level. In short, UTMB® World Series events are for qualifying and experiencing the UTMB circuit 💪, while UTMB® Index races are for progressing and measuring your level 🫵.
If your goal is to run the UTMB, CCC, or OCC, you will inevitably have to go through the World Series to get your Running Stones ⚫️. But before aiming for the finals, UTMB Index races are an excellent way to test your abilities, track your progress, and prepare your body for the effort 🥵. By combining the two types of races, you can progress smartly and get closer to your dream of Chamonix 😍.
