From island to island, from shoreline to summit. SwimRunMan is the swimrun circuit that planted its flag in the heart of the most beautiful settings in France 🇫🇷. Four stages, islands to cross by swimming, trails to devour on the run, and one single rule: keep moving, in pairs, up against the elements. ÖtillÖ Merit Race labeled, this circuit does far more than give you great photos: every bib brings you closer to a qualifier for the World Championship 🌍. From the curious beginner to the amphibious ultra-trail runner, here’s the SwimRunMan calendar and everything you need to know before you dive in 😁.
Every great series has its origin myth. That of SwimRunMan comes down to three first names: Alexandre, Bertrand and Florent—three long-time friends, crazy about sport in all its forms: team sports, athletics, triathlons, outdoor nature activities... 🌲 Following the rise of swimrun coming from Sweden, they told themselves something simple: what if we brought this thing home? 🤔 Two years of tinkering, scouting, and thinking later, the concept was born in 2016, with its own codes and its own brand 📍. The Gorges du Verdon are among the circuit’s founding playgrounds, joined over the seasons by other gems ⭐️. Lake Vassivière hosted swimrun in 2016 before officially joining the label in 2021 🗓️. Now run by ALCI 4 Events, SwimRunMan has established itself as the reference circuit in France ⚡️.
Let’s start with a few quick explanations. Swimrun is a sport that strings together, with no break, sections of open-water swimming and trail running in the great outdoors 🏊. No bag, no changing room: you run in your wetsuit, you swim in your sneakers 👟. All your gear (paddles, pull buoy, tether…) stays on you from the first to the last stride! Born in Sweden with the first competition called "ÖtillÖ" (“from island to island”), the sport then became a European phenomenon. And today, SwimRunMan is one of its finest French showcases 🇫🇷.
This sport is most often raced in pairs 👯, and sometimes linked by a tether. Basically: you pick your buddy, you struggle together, you cross the line together 🔐. Ohhh yes—you quickly realize it’s best to choose your duo wisely... There are also solo and relay formats depending on the race. Distance-wise, the circuit casts a wide net so no one gets left behind 🫠. The Experience format (5 km to 8 km) is the entry point for beginners. Next come the Sprint, the Classic, the Half, and the Ultra for the big engines ⚡️. Add to that standout formats with night courses, night AND day courses, vertical formats, not to mention the kids formats for the next generation 🧒.
But the real golden ticket is the ÖtillÖ Merit Race label. Put simply: several races in the circuit are recognized by ÖtillÖ, the Swedish organization that oversees the World Championship 🌍. You rack up points based on your placing, and that total can open the doors to Worlds. Since 2025, some stages also count toward the French swimrun championship of the FFTRI—like the Verdon Classic Duo 🏃. Before we finish the explanations, one last cornerstone of the homegrown DNA: zero impact ♻️. The circuit commits to human-scale events on protected sites (Gorges du Verdon, around the Écrins National Park…), while respecting the most fragile seasons and areas 🌿.
Oh yes, it really makes you want to do it! Now, let us introduce the main competitions on this circuit 🔄. We’re going to present four stages with four different vibes 🏞️. First up, a mini Tour de France going from canyon to the coastline: it’s the circuit’s matrix, and probably its jewel 💎. The SwimRunMan Gorges du Verdon takes you swimming in the waters of the largest canyon in Europe, between limestone cliffs and sections where humans feel very small 😶. The Half format covers 47.4 km and is regularly cited among the most beautiful swimrun races on the planet! Then we head for Limousin and its wide-open-spaces vibe ✨. At SwimRunMan Lake Vassivière, you hop from island to island on one of the largest artificial lakes in France, right in the middle of floating bridges, peat bogs, and stilted walkways 🌉. There’s the 23 km “classic loop” or the 38 km “Half” with five islands to cross. This is where the famous Night and Night & Day formats take place, to experience the lake by headlamp 🔦.
For this third stop, we’re in Isère, on a quintessential mountain playground—heading to Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes where you’re going to gain altitude! ☄️ The SwimRunMan Grands Lacs de Laffrey plays with the cool and ever-changing waters of the high-altitude lakes of Isère and the surrounding terrain ⛰️. It’s the only event on the circuit to offer a Vertical format, for elevation-gain lovers who like it when it stings 🥵. Last but not least—and not the least photogenic. The SwimRunMan Calanques Côte Bleue dives into the turquoise coves off Ensuès-la-Redonne, where the rock drops straight into the sea 🌊. Three distances to take it on, from curious first-timers to seasoned racers📋.
The circuit is set, the calendar is open—only one thing is missing: you (and your partner) 🫵. The next SwimRunMan Finisher might be you? 🤪
