Knock knock knock! ๐ค A marathon in one of the most photogenic cities on the planetโtempted? ๐ The Baku Marathon 2026 will take place in early May ๐ , under the slogan "Win the Wind" ๐จ (literally, win the wind)โand yes, in Baku, wind isn't a metaphor: the city is officially called the "City of Winds", constantly swept by gusts blowing in from the Caspian Sea ๐. Plus, at that time of year you'll hit the sweet spot temperature-wise ๐ก๏ธ. Not too hot (thanks to the sea breeze! ๐ฌ๏ธ), not too coldโin short, the perfect cocktail for a successful weekend! ๐ช
The marathon route is a full cultural program all by itself ๐บ๏ธ. The start is from National Flag Square ๐ฆ๐ฟ, where one of the largest national flags in the world flies: planted on a 162-meter mast, this tricolor flag of azure, red, and green adorned with a crescent and a star can be seen from miles away โญ. From there, runners set off onto the Baku Boulevard, this legendary 25-kilometer pedestrian promenade along the Caspian Sea, built in the Tsarist era and expanded over the decades. This is where people from Baku have come to stroll, drink their tea, and watch the boats since the 19th century ๐ต. The route then passes through the Baku International Sea Trade Port โ๏ธ, one of the most important on the Caspian Sea, a key player in the modern Silk Road linking Central Asia to Europe ๐ข. You then head up Neftchilar Avenue ("Oil Workers Avenue"), a historic artery built by the oil millionaires of the early 20th century, then run along the White City Boulevard, this ultra-modern new district raised in a decade on former industrial sites ๐๏ธ. The course then continues via Heydar Aliyev Avenue, passes the Olympic Stadium (a 68,000-seat stadium that hosted the first European Games in history in 2015 ๐ ), then crosses the bridge over Boyukshor, follows the peri-urban roads to the finish line at Sea Breeze, a seaside resort complex north of the city facing the sea ๐ . In short, 42 kilometers of architecture, history, and breathtaking skyline. Your legs will suffer, but your eyes will feast ๐.
Baku, capital of Azerbaijan ๐ฆ๐ฟ, is a city that baffles at first sight and captivates at second glance ๐. Its historic heart, Icheri Sheher, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2000 ๐๏ธ, piles up layers of history: the 12th-century walls, the Maiden Tower whose origins date back to the 6th-7th centuries BC, and the 15th-century Palace of the Shirvanshahs. All of it tucked into cobbled alleys where you could get lost for hours ๐ฐ๏ธ. Then came the oil boom of the late 19th century: Baku was supplying half of the world's oil ๐ข๏ธ, and with it colossal fortunes that reshaped the city into the "Paris of the Caucasus" ๐ฅ, with Haussmann-style boulevards and Art Nouveau faรงades.
After the effort, Baku takes care of the rest ๐. The city is called the "Land of Fire" ๐ฅ: since Antiquity, natural fires fed by pockets of underground gas would spontaneously burn on the hills, attracting Zoroastrian pilgrims from across the region. The Ateshgah temple, still standing 30 km from the city, is proof of that โฉ๏ธ. And for food ๐: Azerbaijani cuisine is one of the most generous in the world ๐ฝ๏ธ. Saffron plov ๐, vine-leaf dolma ๐ฟ, lyulya kebab on lavash bread ๐ฅ, and honey-and-almond pakhlava ๐ฏ, all washed down with black tea in small armudu glasses๐น. Forty-two kilometers, then ending with a feast in a 15th-century caravanserai. As a day plan goes, we've seen worse ๐.
So, are you coming to the seaside with your bib?
The Baku Marathon offers a generally fast, rolling course ๐, designed to discover the city while keeping a profile thatโs favorable for performance ๐. The start is given at National Flag Square, on the shoreline of the Caspian Sea ๐. The first kilometers immediately follow the seafront and the famous Baku Boulevard: long straightaways, wide and flat, ideal for finding your rhythm ๐ฅ.
After this warm-up along the water โต๏ธ, the route heads up Neftchilar Avenue and then links up with the cityโs main arteries ๐๏ธ. Runners move onto broad urban boulevards, often straight, where itโs easy to maintain a steady pace. The course notably crosses the White City area before joining Heydar Aliyev Avenue, a fast section where the road opens up and the pack generally begins to spread out ๐๏ธ.
It then passes near the Baku Olympic Stadium before crossing the bridge over Boyukshor. This is one of the rare moments when the course changes slightly in relief, without presenting any major difficulty ๐ค.
The last part of the race gradually leaves the center to reach the more open corridors in the north of the city. The route then becomes very linear, often exposed to the wind ๐จcoming from the Caspian Sea, a factor that can come into play in the final stretch. The last kilometers lead marathoners to the seaside complex of Sea Breeze Resort, where the finish is located ๐.
A rather fast marathon, without major difficulties, but where managing the wind and the long straightaways can make the difference in the second half of the race ๐ .
The race will start at National Flag Square in Baku on Sunday, May 3, 2026.
