The event in a few words

Knock knock knock! ๐Ÿค“ A marathon in one of the most photogenic cities on the planetโ€”tempted? ๐ŸŒ The Baku Marathon 2026 will take place in early May ๐Ÿ“…, under the slogan "Win the Wind" ๐Ÿ’จ (literally, win the wind)โ€”and yes, in Baku, wind isn't a metaphor: the city is officially called the "City of Winds", constantly swept by gusts blowing in from the Caspian Sea ๐ŸŒŠ. Plus, at that time of year you'll hit the sweet spot temperature-wise ๐ŸŒก๏ธ. Not too hot (thanks to the sea breeze! ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ), not too coldโ€”in short, the perfect cocktail for a successful weekend! ๐Ÿ’ช

The marathon route is a full cultural program all by itself ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ. The start is from National Flag Square ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ฟ, where one of the largest national flags in the world flies: planted on a 162-meter mast, this tricolor flag of azure, red, and green adorned with a crescent and a star can be seen from miles away โญ. From there, runners set off onto the Baku Boulevard, this legendary 25-kilometer pedestrian promenade along the Caspian Sea, built in the Tsarist era and expanded over the decades. This is where people from Baku have come to stroll, drink their tea, and watch the boats since the 19th century ๐Ÿต. The route then passes through the Baku International Sea Trade Port โš“๏ธ, one of the most important on the Caspian Sea, a key player in the modern Silk Road linking Central Asia to Europe ๐Ÿšข. You then head up Neftchilar Avenue ("Oil Workers Avenue"), a historic artery built by the oil millionaires of the early 20th century, then run along the White City Boulevard, this ultra-modern new district raised in a decade on former industrial sites ๐Ÿ—๏ธ. The course then continues via Heydar Aliyev Avenue, passes the Olympic Stadium (a 68,000-seat stadium that hosted the first European Games in history in 2015 ๐Ÿ…), then crosses the bridge over Boyukshor, follows the peri-urban roads to the finish line at Sea Breeze, a seaside resort complex north of the city facing the sea ๐ŸŒ…. In short, 42 kilometers of architecture, history, and breathtaking skyline. Your legs will suffer, but your eyes will feast ๐Ÿ˜.

Baku, capital of Azerbaijan ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ฟ, is a city that baffles at first sight and captivates at second glance ๐Ÿ‘€. Its historic heart, Icheri Sheher, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2000 ๐Ÿ›๏ธ, piles up layers of history: the 12th-century walls, the Maiden Tower whose origins date back to the 6th-7th centuries BC, and the 15th-century Palace of the Shirvanshahs. All of it tucked into cobbled alleys where you could get lost for hours ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ. Then came the oil boom of the late 19th century: Baku was supplying half of the world's oil ๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ, and with it colossal fortunes that reshaped the city into the "Paris of the Caucasus" ๐Ÿฅ, with Haussmann-style boulevards and Art Nouveau faรงades.

After the effort, Baku takes care of the rest ๐Ÿ˜„. The city is called the "Land of Fire" ๐Ÿ”ฅ: since Antiquity, natural fires fed by pockets of underground gas would spontaneously burn on the hills, attracting Zoroastrian pilgrims from across the region. The Ateshgah temple, still standing 30 km from the city, is proof of that โ›ฉ๏ธ. And for food ๐Ÿ˜‹: Azerbaijani cuisine is one of the most generous in the world ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ. Saffron plov ๐Ÿš, vine-leaf dolma ๐ŸŒฟ, lyulya kebab on lavash bread ๐Ÿฅ™, and honey-and-almond pakhlava ๐Ÿฏ, all washed down with black tea in small armudu glasses๐ŸŒน. Forty-two kilometers, then ending with a feast in a 15th-century caravanserai. As a day plan goes, we've seen worse ๐Ÿ˜„.

So, are you coming to the seaside with your bib?

4 reasons to join this race

The buzz of Baku Boulevard ๐ŸŽ‰
The course follows a large part of the seafront Promenade, one of the longest in the world (25 km!). It's the beating heart of the city. Unlike some marathons that take you through deserted industrial areas, here you run where locals live, drink their tea, and will cheer you on with the legendary hospitality of the Caucasus ๐Ÿคฒ.
The Flame Towers spectacle ๐Ÿ”ฅ
Running with the Flame Towers in your sights is a unique visual experience. These three flame-shaped skyscrapers tower over the bay and are covered in thousands of LEDs that light up at night. It's the perfect symbol of the fusion between oil-fueled modernity and the Zoroastrian roots of the "Land of Fire". A guaranteed "wow" effect in your race photos ๐Ÿ“ธ.
A course between grandeur and History ๐Ÿ›๏ธ
The route is a real time-travel journey. You set off at the foot of a 162-meter mast (one of the tallest in the world!), you cross imperial 19th-century Baku on Oil Workers Avenue, and you finish in the futurism of the White City district. Running here means crossing 150 years of architecture in 42.195 km ๐Ÿ˜‰.
The final sprint, "Sea Breeze" style ๐ŸŒŠ
Unlike many marathons that loop around downtown, this one takes you out toward the open sea. The finish is at Sea Breeze, an ultra-glam beach resort complex north of the city. Imagine crossing the finish line with fine sand and the Caspian horizon in front of you, far from the urban chaos. It's the perfect transition between effort and immediate relaxation ๐Ÿค“.

A few more words

The Baku Marathon offers a generally fast, rolling course ๐Ÿƒ, designed to discover the city while keeping a profile thatโ€™s favorable for performance ๐Ÿ†. The start is given at National Flag Square, on the shoreline of the Caspian Sea ๐ŸŒŠ. The first kilometers immediately follow the seafront and the famous Baku Boulevard: long straightaways, wide and flat, ideal for finding your rhythm ๐Ÿฅ.

After this warm-up along the water โ›ต๏ธ, the route heads up Neftchilar Avenue and then links up with the cityโ€™s main arteries ๐Ÿ™๏ธ. Runners move onto broad urban boulevards, often straight, where itโ€™s easy to maintain a steady pace. The course notably crosses the White City area before joining Heydar Aliyev Avenue, a fast section where the road opens up and the pack generally begins to spread out ๐ŸŽ๏ธ.

It then passes near the Baku Olympic Stadium before crossing the bridge over Boyukshor. This is one of the rare moments when the course changes slightly in relief, without presenting any major difficulty ๐Ÿค“.

The last part of the race gradually leaves the center to reach the more open corridors in the north of the city. The route then becomes very linear, often exposed to the wind ๐Ÿ’จcoming from the Caspian Sea, a factor that can come into play in the final stretch. The last kilometers lead marathoners to the seaside complex of Sea Breeze Resort, where the finish is located ๐Ÿ.

A rather fast marathon, without major difficulties, but where managing the wind and the long straightaways can make the difference in the second half of the race ๐Ÿ˜….
