Knock, knock! ๐ค A marathon in one of the most photogenic cities on the planet, are you interested? ๐ The Baku Marathon 2026 will take place at the beginning of May ๐ , under the slogan "Win the Wind" ๐จ (literally, win the wind) and yes, the wind in Baku is no metaphor: the city is officially called the "City of Winds", constantly swept by gusts blowing from the Caspian Sea ๐. Plus, this time of year is perfect temperature-wise ๐ก๏ธ. Neither too hot (thank you, sea breeze! ๐ฌ๏ธ), nor too cold, in short, the perfect cocktail for a successful weekend! ๐ช
The marathon course is a complete cultural program in itself ๐บ๏ธ. The start is at the National Flag Square ๐ฆ๐ฟ, where flies one of the largest national flags in the world: planted on a 162-meter mast, this azure, red, and green tricolor flag adorned with a crescent and star is visible from miles away โญ. From there, runners set off on the Baku Boulevard, this legendary 25-kilometer pedestrian promenade along the Caspian Sea, built in the Tsarist era and expanded over the decades. It's where Baku residents come to stroll, drink tea, and watch the boats since the 19th century ๐ต. The route then crosses the Baku International Maritime Port โ๏ธ, one of the most important in the Caspian Sea, an essential player in the modern Silk Road linking Central Asia to Europe ๐ข. Heading up Neftchilar Avenue ("the oil barons' avenue"), a historical artery built by early 20th-century oil tycoons, and then along the White City Boulevard, this new ultra-modern district that arose in a decade on former industrial sites ๐๏ธ. The route then heads along Heydar Aliyev Avenue, passes by the Olympic Stadium (stadium of 68,000 seats that hosted the first European Games in history in 2015 ๐ ), then crosses the bridge over Boyukshor, skirts the peri-urban roads to the finish line at Sea Breeze, a seaside resort north of the city facing the sea ๐ . In short, 42 kilometers of breathtaking architecture, history, and skyline. The legs might hurt, but the eyes will delight ๐.
Baku, capital of Azerbaijan ๐ฆ๐ฟ, is a city that bewilders at first glance and captivates at second ๐. Its historical heart Icheri Sheher, a UNESCO world heritage site since 2000 ๐๏ธ, layers history: from the 12th-century ramparts, the Maiden Tower dating back to the 6th-7th centuries BC, and the 15th-century Palace of the Shirvanshahs. All nestled in cobblestone alleys where you could lose yourself for hours ๐ฐ๏ธ. Then came the oil boom of the late 19th century: Baku provided then half of the world's oil ๐ข๏ธ, accompanied by colossal fortunes that redesigned the city into the "Paris of the Caucasus" ๐ฅ, with Haussmannian boulevards and Art Nouveau facades. Garry Kasparov, regarded as the greatest chess player of all time, was born here in 1963 โ๏ธ. The city has a habit of producing champions under pressure, you'll feel right at home ๐.
After the effort, Baku takes care of the rest ๐. The city is known as the "Land of Fire" ๐ฅ: since antiquity, natural fires fueled by underground gas pockets spontaneously burned on the hills, attracting Zoroastrian pilgrims from the region. The Ateshgah temple, still standing 30 km from the city, is a testament to this โฉ๏ธ. And for eating ๐: Azerbaijani cuisine is among the world's most generous ๐ฝ๏ธ. Saffron plov ๐, vine leaf dolma ๐ฟ, lyulya kebab on lavash bread ๐ฅ, and honey and almond pakhlava ๐ฏ, all washed down with black tea in small armudu glasses ๐น. Forty-two kilometers to end with a feast in a 15th-century caravanserai. As a day plan, we've seen worse ๐.
So are you coming to the seaside with your race bib?
The Baku Marathon offers a generally flat course ๐, designed to explore the city while maintaining a profile favorable to performance ๐. The start is given at the National Flag Square, at the shore of the Caspian Sea ๐. The first kilometers immediately follow the waterfront and the famous Baku Boulevard: long straight, wide and flat sections, ideal for finding your rhythm ๐ฅ.
After warming up along the water โต๏ธ, the route ascends Neftchilar Avenue and then continues along the city's main roads ๐๏ธ. The runners then progress on wide urban boulevards, often straight, where it is easy to maintain a steady pace. The course notably goes through the White City area before joining Heydar Aliyev Avenue, a fast section where the road opens up and where the pack usually begins to spread ๐๏ธ.
The course then passes near the Baku Olympic Stadium before crossing the bridge of Boyukshor. This is one of the rare moments where the course changes slightly in elevation, but without any major difficulty ๐ค.
The last part of the race gradually leaves the center to join more open routes to the north of the city. The course then becomes very linear, often exposed to the wind ๐จ coming from the Caspian Sea, a factor that can play a role in the finale. The final kilometers lead the marathoners to the beach resort complex of Sea Breeze Resort, where the finish line is located ๐.
A rather fast marathon, without major difficulties, but where wind management and long straight sections can make the difference in the second half of the race ๐ .
The race will start at the National Flag Square in Baku on Sunday, May 3, 2026.
