The event in a few words

Knock, knock! ๐Ÿค“ A marathon in one of the most photogenic cities on the planet, are you interested? ๐ŸŒ The Baku Marathon 2026 will take place at the beginning of May ๐Ÿ“…, under the slogan "Win the Wind" ๐Ÿ’จ (literally, win the wind) and yes, the wind in Baku is no metaphor: the city is officially called the "City of Winds", constantly swept by gusts blowing from the Caspian Sea ๐ŸŒŠ. Plus, this time of year is perfect temperature-wise ๐ŸŒก๏ธ. Neither too hot (thank you, sea breeze! ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ), nor too cold, in short, the perfect cocktail for a successful weekend! ๐Ÿ’ช

The marathon course is a complete cultural program in itself ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ. The start is at the National Flag Square ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ฟ, where flies one of the largest national flags in the world: planted on a 162-meter mast, this azure, red, and green tricolor flag adorned with a crescent and star is visible from miles away โญ. From there, runners set off on the Baku Boulevard, this legendary 25-kilometer pedestrian promenade along the Caspian Sea, built in the Tsarist era and expanded over the decades. It's where Baku residents come to stroll, drink tea, and watch the boats since the 19th century ๐Ÿต. The route then crosses the Baku International Maritime Port โš“๏ธ, one of the most important in the Caspian Sea, an essential player in the modern Silk Road linking Central Asia to Europe ๐Ÿšข. Heading up Neftchilar Avenue ("the oil barons' avenue"), a historical artery built by early 20th-century oil tycoons, and then along the White City Boulevard, this new ultra-modern district that arose in a decade on former industrial sites ๐Ÿ—๏ธ. The route then heads along Heydar Aliyev Avenue, passes by the Olympic Stadium (stadium of 68,000 seats that hosted the first European Games in history in 2015 ๐Ÿ…), then crosses the bridge over Boyukshor, skirts the peri-urban roads to the finish line at Sea Breeze, a seaside resort north of the city facing the sea ๐ŸŒ…. In short, 42 kilometers of breathtaking architecture, history, and skyline. The legs might hurt, but the eyes will delight ๐Ÿ˜.

Baku, capital of Azerbaijan ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ฟ, is a city that bewilders at first glance and captivates at second ๐Ÿ‘€. Its historical heart Icheri Sheher, a UNESCO world heritage site since 2000 ๐Ÿ›๏ธ, layers history: from the 12th-century ramparts, the Maiden Tower dating back to the 6th-7th centuries BC, and the 15th-century Palace of the Shirvanshahs. All nestled in cobblestone alleys where you could lose yourself for hours ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ. Then came the oil boom of the late 19th century: Baku provided then half of the world's oil ๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ, accompanied by colossal fortunes that redesigned the city into the "Paris of the Caucasus" ๐Ÿฅ, with Haussmannian boulevards and Art Nouveau facades. Garry Kasparov, regarded as the greatest chess player of all time, was born here in 1963 โ™Ÿ๏ธ. The city has a habit of producing champions under pressure, you'll feel right at home ๐Ÿ˜Œ.

After the effort, Baku takes care of the rest ๐Ÿ˜„. The city is known as the "Land of Fire" ๐Ÿ”ฅ: since antiquity, natural fires fueled by underground gas pockets spontaneously burned on the hills, attracting Zoroastrian pilgrims from the region. The Ateshgah temple, still standing 30 km from the city, is a testament to this โ›ฉ๏ธ. And for eating ๐Ÿ˜‹: Azerbaijani cuisine is among the world's most generous ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ. Saffron plov ๐Ÿš, vine leaf dolma ๐ŸŒฟ, lyulya kebab on lavash bread ๐Ÿฅ™, and honey and almond pakhlava ๐Ÿฏ, all washed down with black tea in small armudu glasses ๐ŸŒน. Forty-two kilometers to end with a feast in a 15th-century caravanserai. As a day plan, we've seen worse ๐Ÿ˜„.

So are you coming to the seaside with your race bib?

4 reasons to join this race

The excitement of Baku Boulevard ๐ŸŽ‰
The route covers a large part of the Seaside Promenade, one of the longest in the world (25 km!). It's the heart of the city. Unlike some marathons that take you into deserted industrial areas, here you run where locals live, drink their tea, and will cheer you on with the legendary hospitality of the Caucasus ๐Ÿคฒ.
The spectacle of the Flame Towers ๐Ÿ”ฅ
Running with the Flame Towers in view is a unique visual experience. These three flame-shaped skyscrapers dominate the bay and are covered with thousands of LEDs that light up in the evening. It's the perfect symbol of the fusion between oil modernity and the Zoroastrian roots of the "Land of Fire." Guaranteed "wow" effect on your race photos ๐Ÿ“ธ.
A course of grandeur and History ๐Ÿ›๏ธ
The route is a true time journey. You start at the foot of a 162-meter mast (one of the tallest in the world!), traverse 19th-century imperial Baku on Oil Barons Avenue, and finish in the futuristic White City district. Running here means crossing 150 years of architecture in 42.195 km ๐Ÿ˜‰.
The final sprint in 'Sea Breeze' mode ๐ŸŒŠ
Unlike many marathons that circle around city centers, this one leads you offshore. The finish line is at Sea Breeze, an ultra-glamorous seaside resort north of the city. Imagine crossing the finish line with fine sand and the Caspian horizon in sight, far from urban chaos. It's the perfect transition from effort to immediate relaxation ๐Ÿค“.

A few more words

The Baku Marathon offers a generally flat course ๐Ÿƒ, designed to explore the city while maintaining a profile favorable to performance ๐Ÿ†. The start is given at the National Flag Square, at the shore of the Caspian Sea ๐ŸŒŠ. The first kilometers immediately follow the waterfront and the famous Baku Boulevard: long straight, wide and flat sections, ideal for finding your rhythm ๐Ÿฅ.

After warming up along the water โ›ต๏ธ, the route ascends Neftchilar Avenue and then continues along the city's main roads ๐Ÿ™๏ธ. The runners then progress on wide urban boulevards, often straight, where it is easy to maintain a steady pace. The course notably goes through the White City area before joining Heydar Aliyev Avenue, a fast section where the road opens up and where the pack usually begins to spread ๐ŸŽ๏ธ.

The course then passes near the Baku Olympic Stadium before crossing the bridge of Boyukshor. This is one of the rare moments where the course changes slightly in elevation, but without any major difficulty ๐Ÿค“.

The last part of the race gradually leaves the center to join more open routes to the north of the city. The course then becomes very linear, often exposed to the wind ๐Ÿ’จ coming from the Caspian Sea, a factor that can play a role in the finale. The final kilometers lead the marathoners to the beach resort complex of Sea Breeze Resort, where the finish line is located ๐Ÿ.

A rather fast marathon, without major difficulties, but where wind management and long straight sections can make the difference in the second half of the race ๐Ÿ˜….
