A legendary distance of 21.0975 km to cover between skyscrapers, mountains and a caliente vibe: set your sights on the Media Maraton de Bogota (or Bogotá Half Marathon in English version 🏴).
In July ☀️, the immense Colombian capital opens its doors and puts its activities on hold to offer an urban route crossing the city from west to east 🏙️. Nothing better to sweat it out in good spirits and the summer heat. Starting from the legendary Simón Bolívar Park, the course runs flat through Bogotá’s streets for 2.5 km before the first meters of positive elevation gain appear 📈. Because yes, we’re not on a runway or at the Valencia Half Marathon here—your legs are going to feel it and notice those meters of elevation gain 🥵. But once you reach km 12, you can take a deep breath: almost all the difficulties are behind you. All that’s left is to roll over the false flats until km 17.5, then hit one last burst of speed on the final straight 💨, at km 20. A true 2.0 guided tour—faster and more grueling, but just as mind-blowing 😳.
Victims of their own success, and to speak to every type of runner, the organizers of the Bogotá Half Marathon have also been handling the Bogotá 10K for a few years now 🏎️. The start is given the same day as the half marathon, so the party gets even wilder and all spectators can rally together 📣. It’s one of the most dynamic races in South America, and it attracts runners from all walks of life. 10 km is a distance where records regularly fall, and where anyone can measure themselves against the best runners in the world 🏃. The route also goes through the city center of the capital, but it doesn’t follow the half marathon’s tracks 🔀. Only the starts and finishes are shared, so the cheering reaches its peak 🤯.
But Bogotá’s real ace is also its historic and natural setting 🏔️. From the standpoint of old stones, you can visit the Gold Museum and admire fascinating archaeological treasures 🏺. It’s a city with a heavy colonial past and alleyways steeped in history. Looking for a breathtaking viewpoint? Gain some altitude by climbing Mount Monserrate, and enjoy a stunning view over the city 🌄! Otherwise, you can also take a trip to Guatavita, the legendary Lake of El Dorado. Nearby, you’ll also find the surprising Casa Loca Guatavita, a building that might just catch you off guard. Don’t panic if you notice something odd—it’s not the effort giving you hallucinations 😂. For food lovers, the city also offers a unique gastronomy, like ajiaco or sancocho 🍛.
Colombia alone offers 1,000 reasons to head to South America, so when you pair it with one of the country’s most legendary races, you get a true dream destination 🤩.
