In Bordeaux, there are two types of athletes: those who push into the red and those who drink red 🍷.
During the Bordeaux Saint-Malo, you’ll be part of the first group of athletes, but nothing stops you from finishing your effort with a nice glass of Graves or Saint-Emiliion 🥴. Anyway, we’re getting off track: before we talk about the finish, let us tell you more about the start and the scale of the challenge awaiting you! 🏁 The cyclosportive we’re talking about starts in Bordeaux, at the Bordeaux-Lac velodrome (staying on theme 🚴), and covers 840 km through the western part of French territory to finish in Saint-Malo. In a single race, you’ll successively cross Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Pays de la Loire, Normandy, and Brittany 🌊 for an exceptional city-to-city race.
More concretely, the route starts in Gironde and takes you through the land of croissants on a 840 km loop made up of 99% asphalt 🛣️. The gravel bike can stay in the garage—a light, fast bike will do just fine 💨. On the other hand, aero bars aren’t necessary—we’re not racing against the clock here: in fact, no rankings are established. That way, you can fully enjoy your journey and focus on your own effort 🤩. As for elevation gain, it’s 6,400 m+ that will make your thighs burn throughout your trip. Said like that, it may sound like a lot, but remember the climbs are spread over more than 800 km, so don’t worry—it’ll go down smooooooth 🍦. To top it all off, the organizers give you 90 hours, i.e. a little under 4 days. And don’t be late: a hot, steaming finish meal will be waiting for you ♨️. If you want to be sure you’ll be there for dinner, you can also sign up as a duo, as a trio or as a team of 4, to shave off a few precious minutes and choose your seat at the table 🪑. Plus, in the team version, slipstreaming and drafting are allowed. So you can rely on other participants to reach your goals in no time at all 💪.
After several days spent on the bike, spend several days resting 😴. When we say "rest", we don’t necessarily mean sleeping, but rather gently discovering the surroundings. We don’t find ourselves every day by the sea, on the beautiful Breton coast with time to spare 🪨. You can set aside the sunrises and sunsets over the cliffs—you should already have seen a few along your route 🌅. On the other hand, the setting itself can be visited during the day: the legendary Mont Saint-Michel a few kilometers away, or the islets of Jersey and Guernsey can be done as a day trip. Perfect for combining boat 🛥️, city sightseeing, and sandy beaches in the north of France. If you really want to enjoy the natural wonders of this part of France, you can also take the highway and head toward Étretat and its splendid rocky cliffs 🚗. Sure, it’s a bit of a drive, but the most beautiful sites have to be earned 😌.
The Bordeaux Saint-Malo isn’t the wine route, but we promise it will still be an un-wine-believable adventure, introducing you to the lands of red wine, Guignolet, calvados, and even cider! 🍏 (do be careful during your journey: alcohol abuse is dangerous for your health; consume in moderation ⚠️)
A word from the organizer:
"Bordeaux Saint-Malo isn’t a race; it’s a human adventure where every kilometer tells a story, and every finisher writes their own."
The start is given at the Bordeaux-Lac velodrome, after a lap of the track on 42° banked turns, for a 840 km journey with 6,700 mD+ to the Saint-Malo velodrome 🤯.
The route alternates between fast, rolling sections in Charente and in Deux-Sèvres, a few more punchy, leg-breaking re-accelerations around Parthenay and Durtal, then a real highlight at Sablé-sur-Sarthe, the life base set up at km 413. This will be the moment for you to meet people, refuel, and take on the second part of the journey 🗺️.
After that, you'll see more history, between Flers, Bayeux and the D-Day beaches, before finishing at Omaha Beach. Saint-Lô opens the final straight towards Mont-Saint-Michel. The final shift will happen by the Malouin ramparts and the Georges-Gilles track, the very place where Ferdi Kübler claimed a stage victory in the 1949 Tour de France 🏆.
In short, the route is designed to be long and demanding more in terms of endurance than technique. The necessary self-sufficiency, sleep management and nutrition will be key criteria for your success in this event 💨.
