How about a little run with our Belgian neighbors? ๐ง๐ช Yes, smarty, you've already guessed what we're going to talk about: nothing less than the superb, prestigious, famous, and iconic Brussels Marathon โจ taking place at the start of November in Belgium! ๐ฅ๐
As every year, the AIMS (Association of International Marathons and Distance Races) welcomes you with open arms ๐ for its annual Marathon, along with a no less legendary Half Marathon and a 7 km ๐ . Surely your assumptions that one only goes to Belgium for beer ๐บ and fries will quickly crumble! ๐ You'll realize your mistake when you discover the monumental wealth of the world city ๐๏ธ that is Brussels and why the Brussels Airport Marathon & Half Marathon is an unmissable event for finishers from all over the world ๐ (the biggest running event, some might say). Hurry, spots for the 20th edition are going like waffle bites ๐ง.
But why? Well, for its enticing distances that challenge all competition enthusiasts ๐โโ๏ธ. With its 42 km, its 21 km, and its 7 km, runners only need to choose the challenge they want to tackle. And what a challenge! ๐ฅ Every year, the Brussels Marathon gathers the best performers in the world and the greatest athletics stars โญ. Can you do better than John Kelai and Jennifer Chesinon who shattered records in 2004 with times of 2h 10min 59s and 2h 32min 16s, respectively? ๐คฏ Not sure, especially since the Brussels Marathon is known to be particularly challenging, with notably 335 mD+ ๐. Of course, not all participants have the soul of a marathoner, which is why there's always the option to complete the half marathon or the 7 km, offering just as many opportunities to zoom like a rocket ๐ and discover the capital of Europe in all its splendor ๐ฅฐ.
"Capital of Europe, really?", the Strasbourgers might say. The terminology is debatable, but no one can contest the prominent role of the capital of Belgium in economic, political, cultural, artistic, and strategic sectors. Located in the agglomeration of Brussels (Brussels for those who've got it all ๐), which consists of 36 municipalities, the city today hosts numerous NGOs (over 1,400), the Council of the European Union, the European Commission, the NATO, and hosts 120 international institutions and 159 embassies ๐. The result is an extremely cosmopolitan population and a multicultural society. Quite engaging, isn't it? But hey! "That's nice", you'll say, "but what is there to see while I run?". And you're right! Let's get back on track ๐.
The city, which celebrated its 1,000th anniversary in 1979, is renowned for its cultural, architectural, and environmental scope as much as it is for its politics. With its Walloon, Flemish influences, historic and artistic heritage, its old town and its business district known as "Little Manhattan" (which has about thirty towers ๐), the city is an open-air museum presenting a wide variety of architectural styles and different atmospheres โจ. As minister Sven Gatz mentions, these are "beautiful boulevards", "emblematic squares" and "green lungs" awaiting you for an "unforgettable experience". You'll start your race in the heart of the city's historical center ๐๏ธ. You'll have the chance to see many major axes of the capital, the Atomium at the Place de Brouckรจre or even the Pentagon.
But it's also an opportunity to take out your camera and feed your Instagram! ๐ธ It certainly won't lack color, even if it rains quite often! ๐ You can discover the Gothic style of the Saint Michael and Saint Gudula Cathedral and Our Lady of Victories at the Sablon, the Art Deco style of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart and the Palace of Fine Arts, or the eclectic and surprising beauty of the Palace of Justice. Connoisseurs will also likely feel the influence of Art Nouveau, for which the city was and remains one of the capitals, through works by Victor Horta, Paul Hankar, and Henry Van de Velde (among others, as there are many more! ๐). But not only that: nature lovers will also find delight, as the city and its agglomeration is one of "the greenest in Europe" ๐ฟ with no less than 8,000 hectares of preserved spaces (which is half of the region) ! You can put on your sneakers and train in the Bois de la Cambre and the Sonian Forest. You might be lucky enough to encounter some of the animals residing there like deer, foxes, or endemic bird species. You will have the chance to see many of these aspects of the city by joining the competition, you lucky one ๐.
Wow! With all this, we don't even know where to begin! So you just have to choose: nature ๐ธ, business district, historic quarter, museums ๐จ, theaters, opera, pubs, festivals, nightclubs, shopping, or a photo session in the city? ๐ค Impossible to choose right! So we suggest you think about your schedule while sipping the best pint of the best blonde at the bar ๐ป. But beware, just one! We remind you that you have a marathon to prepare for.
If all this information hasn't convinced you, then we can't do much moreโฆ Just like the Belgians after the 2018 semi-final ๐.
โ ๏ธ Excessive drinking is harmful to your health, consume with moderation.
The grand start ๐ will take place at the magnificent Place de Brouckรจre, located in the center of the capital city ๐๏ธ. The square features as many Belle รpoque buildings as modern ones. It will offer you a glimpse of the cultural, historical, and economic richness and power of the city. It's a great starting point, isn't it? So once you've donned your bib and tied your laces, you have quite a list of monuments ๐๏ธ waiting for you.
To start in style, you'll race through the longest tunnel in Belgium! ๐ง๐ช The Tunnel Annie Cordy, stretching 2,531 m, will take you beneath the Boulevard Leopold II, a true exciting start! โก๏ธ When you finally see the light ๐ก, you'll spot the 5th largest church in the world ๐, the National Basilica of the Sacred Heart, just that. With its 89 m height and 167 m width, we hope your eyes will be in wide-angle mode ๐, or else you'll miss a stunning mental photo! ๐ธ A unique architecture, with its green dome standing out. Continuing westward in the city, you'll pass through many parks! ๐ณ Surely greeted by bird songs, you'll have the chance to go through the Marais de Ganshoren and wander around the Parc Roi Baudouin ๐. It is filled with greenery, a pond, forests... ideal for a greener mind! Not far away, you'll see the largest stadium in Belgium ๐๏ธ (that's a lot of records ๐ฅต), the King Baudouin Stadium with 50,000 seats! Brace yourself, as it often hosts "The Red Devils" ๐น, (even though it's scary, it's just their national football team โฝ๏ธ). Run like a gazelle, not chasing a ball, but heading to this grand structure! You've surely seen it, that giant atom โ๏ธ amidst nature, haven't you? Yes, you'll pass by the Atomium, this mythical amusement park in the country. But no time to stop, the rest is equally impressive! ๐คฏ
No respite, and head toward the Royal Castle of Laeken ๐ฐ, within the very Royal Domain. Built from 1792, it has hosted all the Belgian monarchs, except King Albert II. Knock, knock, knock, the king's home ๐คด is in front of you! Just opposite, you can immerse in the Park of Laeken, with 45 hectares of greenery ๐ฑ all around! Don't give up, because the 30km wall is approaching! But it's well cushioned, for this iconic point, you'll be at the foot of the Notre-Dame de Laeken Church ๐. A neo-Gothic monument which contains the Royal Crypt of Belgium, housing the tombs of all the country's kings. Yes, it's not very glamorous, but completely historical ๐. After another lap in "Leaken Park", you'll head to another park... Again! Following the famous Boulevard de Lambermont ๐ฃ๏ธ you'll reach the Parc de Josaphat, the green lung of Schaerbeek ๐ฅ. It is often the favorite spot for locals, as it is full of monuments, playgrounds, sports fields, concerts ๐ค, flowers, waterfalls, animals... A bit of everything really! ๐ธ
Enough greenery, back to the city! ๐ On your way, a key feature of this European capital, the Marshal Montgomery Square roundabout ๐. It will gently lead you toward the end of your route, but before that you'll have the chance to encounter a final park, the Cinquantenaire Park. It was created for the country's 50th anniversary ๐ of Independence, in 1880. With a "French style", its trees are aligned, its hedges neatly trimmed, its flowerbeds well-maintained ๐ท all within a well-defined rectangular area. It even has a Triumphal Arch, slightly different from Paris ๐ผ, this one has three arches! And that's not all, it also houses exceptional museums and monuments. There's enough to be amazed for this race finish! ๐ You will have the honor to be welcomed at the king's office itself, at the Royal Palace of Brussels. Hopefully, there won't be any meetings in the offices... In any case, it's a finish line that's quite a dream! ๐
So, ready for this challenge of the Belgian capital and around its most beautiful gifts? ๐
As with the 42 km, the start will be given at the grand Place de Brouckรจre, located right in the center of the capital๐. With a launch in the city's center, you will traverse typical streets.
Head North ๐งญ, straight towards the Church of Our Lady of Laeken. On your way, you'll pass by the Vergote Basin ๐ง, along the quays that border it. The church now serves as the necropolis for the Belgian Royal family ๐ง๐ช. A real history for this monument in neo-gothic style. Continue your journey, with an even more impressive place ๐คฏ, the Royal Castle of Laeken. Just the name makes you want to visit โจ. It is the main residence of Belgian sovereigns, where King Philippe lives peacefully ๐, like all his predecessors except for King Albert II. This building is within the Royal Domain ๐ซ , in the Parc de Laeken, a place well-loved for walks. No walk for you, but rather a well-deserved Half Marathon ๐ . We leave the park slightly and head to the Football Stadium of the Belgian National Team ๐๏ธ. No World Cup in sight, but the largest stadium in the country. With 50,000 seats, fans love coming to watch their "Red Devils" โฃ๏ธ.
Back to the park, because it's full of beautiful places! ๐๏ธ What you will see in the distance is not a gigantic game, but indeed the Atomium, shaped like a giant atom. This structure has multiple facets: an amusement park ๐ข, an exhibition space, or even restaurants. But fun is not now, so let's keep running ๐ to exit this park and head to another one! The Boulevard Lambermont leads you straight to one of the most appreciated by the Belgians themselves. The Josaphat Park, a place as beautiful as it is lively ๐. 20 well-occupied hectares: sports fields, music stages, and even a mini-zoo... ๐ฅ There is variety, and that's what appeals to the residents! ๐ฏโโ๏ธ
Just a few more kilometers to finish this challenge ๐ฅ, and they are well organized! The Boulevard Brand Whitlock takes you straight to the Square Marรฉchal Montgomery ๐ฃ๏ธ. Yes, it is a roundabout, but it is what made this city so important today ๐. It organizes the city by linking the major avenues of the capital: the Avenue de Tervueren and the Boulevards of the Great Ring. First exit to the right, the Parc du Cinquantenaire is there ๐. Inaugurated to celebrate the 50 years of Independence of Belgium, this park will make you travel to France. With well-groomed hedges, aligned trees, and a Triumphal Arch in the center, a total immersion! However, its Triumphal Arch has three arches, a bit more impressive ๐. And finally, the finish line awaits you, at the level of the Royal Palace of Brussels, enough to have a royal arrival!
Come on, a half marathon with so many monuments is not every day, put on your best sneakers ๐ and come enjoy!
A race in the heart of the capital of Belgium? ๐ง๐ช That's exactly what awaits you for this 7 km route and it's not often that you will run so well surrounded! ๐ฝ
Ladies and gentlemen, meet at the Federal Parliament of Brussels ๐. We don't expect you to sign a law โ๏ธ but rather to have a perfect run! In a setting full of history, the starting signal is given ๐. Heading for 7 km in the city center of Brussels, and towards a French-style park ๐ซ๐ท to start well, the Parc du Cinquantenaire. Well-trimmed hedges, aligned trees ๐ณ, organized flowers, and even a Triumphal Arch, you might get confused ๐ตโ๐ซ. But a bit more grandiose than in Paris, here, the monument has three arches ๐คฉ. With this, the scene is set, your admiration will surely be awakened. We continue towards a well-known intersection of the capital, the Square Marรฉchal Montgomery. It connects two major avenues of the city ๐, and it's somewhat thanks to him that it's so important today! U-turn, we make the complete round of this beautiful well-decorated roundabout and start again ๐โโ๏ธ.
The finish line is not far away, but before that, we pass through the park ๐๏ธ again. Don't forget to admire one last time the landscape and all the meticulously thought-out details ๐ญ. Heading for the last kilometers, which bring you closer to a new exceptional monument: the Royal Palace of Brussels ๐๏ธ. The offices are numerous in this area, but don't panic, it's still only Sunday, work isn't today ๐ง. Go celebrate your race instead, because you've earned it, the finish line is right there! ๐ฅ
