Come on, we're taking you on a tour of the land of bulls and cocardiers ๐. You know, where you've got skin hardened by salt, eyes squinted by the sun, and where the sky meets the sea. Yes, it's the Camargue that waits for you for an authentic, magnificent, and breathtaking event: the Grand Raid of Camargue.
There you have it, the scene is set ๐. You already feel like you're there, don't you? Hop hop hop, we forgot a final detail before diving in! ๐ And yes, the Camargue is much better with the accent, right? ๐ค So don't hold back for the rest of the page ๐คฃ. At the beginning of October, in Salin-de-Giraud, in the Bouches-du-Rhรดne region of Provence-Alpes-Cรดte d'Azur, we find the magnificent Grand Raid of Camargue ๐. Under still mild autumn temperatures, you will be able to discover the riches of this jewel, proud of its history and its wild lands ๐ฟ.
No matter your running level and goals, the Camargue is welcoming to all! ๐ There are distances for every taste, and each route will take you running through the authentic territories of the area ๐โโ๏ธ. If you choose one of the major trails, of 100 km, 60 km, 42.195 km, 30 km or 21.095 km, you will lengthen your strides at the heart of the salt flats ๐ง and enjoy a dream finish at the foot of the ramparts of Aigues-Mortes ๐. The last distance, of 12 km, can be tackled running or walking. The Camargue bends over backward just for you! Well, you know us, we're the kind that says dream landscapes are earned... ๐ Well, you've proved us wrong because here, only a few dozen meters of positive elevation await you! ๐ The flat and rolling course offered will allow you to more easily admire the preserved nature surrounding you ๐.
For you will be able to encounter incredible flora and fauna step by step, in the salt flats of the south ๐คฏ. You will be struck by the vastness of these territories so characteristic of the region, with hectares stretching as far as the eye can see ๐. Their large stretches of blue or pink water subtly contrast with the ochre-colored paths that border them ๐. The flamingos ๐ฆฉ and other migratory birds that peacefully inhabit them will surely charm you! ๐ฅฐ The Grand Raid of Camargue thus offers a unique opportunity to tread these preserved lands, usually off-limits. But this trail will also be an opportunity to discover another symbol of the Camargue culture: the manades ๐จโ๐พ. Places for raising Camargue horses and bulls, they still retain the authenticity that gives them their beauty today. Finally, depending on the distance you choose, you will tread beaches that have remained untouched because they are inaccessible by car. Between the seaside and salt flats, it's hard to find a more stunning landscape! ๐คฉ
Just reading these lines (which you read with the accent, right? ๐), you can already feel both the beauty and fragility of the natural spaces that will surround you. The organizers have well understood the importance of preserving these incredible places, true gifts from Mother Nature! Laurent Grenier, founder of the Grand Raid of Camargue, aimed to create a sporting event entirely respectful of nature. Since 2020, the raid has been an eco-actor member of the Camargue biosphere reserve and has been eco-labeled by the Regional Natural Park of Camargue since 2019, a first for a sporting event. With respect for a nature charter, all actions carried out during the event aim towards the preservation of the Camargue territory. As Laurent Grenier says, "it is the awe of man before the beauty of life and nature that leads him to protect it" ๐.
After your discovery of the Camargue territory and its jewels at racing speed, you can slow down the pace to extend your stay more leisurely ๐. Obviously, a visit to the Salt Flats of Aigues-Mortes appears as a must! ๐ On foot, by bike, or aboard the little train ๐, you'll learn more about the flora and fauna of this place, as well as the work of salt workers, responsible for harvesting Camargue Salt. For a more urban stroll ๐๏ธ, head to the medieval town of Aigues-Mortes, where you can surely taste local specialties, tellines ๐ and Camargue stew in particular ๐.
We're sure you'll run as gracefully as a Camargue white horse (and not the one of Henri IV)! ๐โโก๏ธ
Here is the titan of the event ๐ช. The race that bears the name of the event is waiting for you to discover a 100 km course, right in the middle of Marseille and Montpellier. Let yourself be lulled by the breath of the wind, the salty scents and the gentle sound of water ๐จ.
The start is at Aigues-Mortes, close to La Grande Motte ๐๏ธ. You probably know the region for its seaside reputation, but there is no question of sunbathing here. As you can see on the route below, you will first cross many basins and ponds, before reaching the Mediterranean coast ๐ชผ. You will then follow this splendid maritime front up to the "petit rhรดne, which you will cross by swimming using a bridge to reach the town of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. Head to the รtang des Batayolles and congratulate yourself: you have just crossed the 55 km mark ๐. At km 65, you will find the sea again, for a few wet strides in the sea water. The hardest part is behind you ๐ฅณ.
From there, it's all about mentality. Stay the course until the finish, and collapse once you cross the line ๐ฎโ๐จ. Your evening meal will be well deserved!
Ready to gallop in the heart of the Camargue? Then saddle up, and get ready for the biggest route of the event with its 60 km in Salin-de-Giraud.
Keep your eyes wide open, because itโs in the heart of the preserved territory of the Camargue Regional Natural Park that you'll be running for about 80% of your course. After starting in the arenas of Salin-de-Giraud, you'll quickly find yourself among the salt marshes, as early as the second kilometer. You've got it, they will be your main running companions up to the finish line. On the ochre-colored tracks with water on both sides, you won't get tired of the scenery. ๐คฉ Head towards the sea! You will perform a superb loop in the flamingo breeding ponds! ๐ธ
Looking for a trail in marathon format? In our opinion, you're in the right place! ๐ค
Starting from the arenas of Salin-de-Giraud, your route will be shared with the 66 km ๐. After barely 7 km among the ponds, sections along the seaside for a bit of freshness!
So, this trail among the salt marshes? Does it deserve our touch of salt? ๐
For this 30 km trail in the heart of the Camargue, the start will be given at the arenas of Salin-de-Giraud ๐. From the beginning of your race, you will be immersed in the heart of Camargue culture!
Your race will start by the seaside ๐, right in the middle of the flamingos' breeding ponds. Keep your eyes wide open to enjoy the show: between the vast expanses of water and the various birds that inhabit them, the landscape is worth seeing! ๐๏ธ
Like the two longer routes, your race's end will be magical, as you will make your best final sprint towards the arenas of Salin-de-Giraud! ๐
As with the other courses, the start will be launched at the arenas of Salin-De-Giraud! You will then tread the salty ponds amidst birds and pink flamingos! ๐๏ธ
During these 21 kilometers, you will enjoy the vast spaces between meadows and bodies of water ๐. Prepare to face long straight paths of several kilometers, but thankfully without a very significant elevation change ๐โโ๏ธ.
After a refreshment at the halfway point, head back to your starting point, where an exceptional finish awaits you! ๐คฉ
Smallest course of this event, it will offer you a glimpse of the Camargue which will surely make you want to stay a little longer after your race! You will run around the ranch and through the marshes, in the heart of a preserved nature ๐ฟ.
So, ready to come back next year to try a longer course? ๐
