Gruyère Trail Charmey (GTC) 2027

Gruyère may be a world-famous cheese, but it first and foremost refers to a Swiss region as green as it is hilly 🌿. In Charmey, in the heart of the Fribourg Pre-Alps, the Gruyère Trail Charmey takes place every mid-July, one of the major fixtures on the Swiss trail scene. A qualifier for the UTMB World Series and an ITRA member event, it draws more than 1,000 runners to the canton of Fribourg, from beginners to elite stars ⛰. A sporting celebration nestled between pastures, mountain chalets and summits, in the heart of French-speaking Switzerland 🐄.

Four courses, plus races for children, share the mountain 🏃. The 11 km with its 810 m of elevation gain kicks things off for the curious, before the 24 km (1,520 m of elevation gain) and the 36 km (2,570 m of elevation gain) seriously raise the bar. At the very top of the bill sits the big 54 km with its 3,800 m of elevation gain, a monster of climbs that pushes ultra runners to their limits 🥵. Enough to satisfy every pair of legs, from the kid in the children’s race to the seasoned trail runner chasing Alpine elevation 👟. And as befits this kind of terrain, Running Stones are never far away for those aiming for the UTMB grand final at Mont Blanc 🪨.

As for the scenery, the region plays in the big leagues 🏔. The trails climb toward the peaks of the Pre-Alps, from Vanil Noir, the canton’s high point, to the Berra ridgelines and the Vounetse viewpoint, before plunging down to the forests and the shores of Lake Montsalvens 💧. Along the way, you pass alpine chalets where the armaillis still make Gruyère the old-fashioned way, to the sound of the herds’ bells 🔔. Between lush mountains, preserved nature and an emerald lake, the route packs all of Switzerland into a single course 🐐.

In less than a decade, the Gruyère Trail Charmey has established itself as a classic on the Swiss calendar, supported by a local organization and sponsored by a multiple UTMB winner, a mark of seriousness in the eyes of trail purists. A member of the Léman Running Trophy, it blends athletic challenge with a friendly spirit, in the purest tradition of village races 😊.

The atmosphere smells of alpine pastures and conviviality 🎉. On Vounetse mountain as well as in the village of Charmey, entertainment awaits runners, families and spectators throughout the day. The event also makes it a point of honor to respect its environment, in a canton where the alpine pastures have sustained the armaillis for generations. What remains is the very real challenge of the 3,800 m of elevation gain on the long course, a reminder that in the Pre-Alps, nothing is earned without sweating 💪.
