The EDP Porto Marathon 🇵🇹 is a race not to be missed at the end of the year. It is organized annually in Porto, the second-largest city in Portugal, located in the north of the country. It offers a breathtaking view of the Atlantic coast 🌊, the Douro river and the Gustave Eiffel bridge 🗼.
Since 2004, the Marathon of Porto (with the proper accent, please) has quickly become an iconic event in the running world 🏃. The event has gained notoriety over the years by attracting thousands of national and international runners 🌎. The race gathers 15,000 runners over all distances and offers 6 and 10 km events, the Fun Race and APO Family Race Healthy Bones Run, which makes the race even more friendly and allows you to have your entire family or friends run (and maybe watch a match of FC Porto for the lucky ones) 👪! The majority of participants find themselves in the main 42.195 km event counting 6,300 runners. The reasons are simple: emblematic monuments, a different view of the city, and a range of distances that can convince your friends (even the less athletic ones 🫣).
Races organized in autumn have a bad reputation for weather. But this is not the case for this marathon! The climate is generally favorable, with temperatures oscillating between 12°C and 17°C during the day. The ideal weather to perform 🏆. Don't wait until the last moment to get your bib! ⌚ Many runners anticipate and get their bibs months in advance, and this is due to the reputation of this Portuguese marathon. From late September, bib prices will increase even more, so don't hesitate any longer! 🤑
The event's route is known for its beauty and picturesque character. It runs along the Atlantic coast, offering runners spectacular views of the ocean and the city of Porto. As a participant, you will also pass through historic neighborhoods 🕍, emblematic bridges such as the Dom Luís I Bridge or Arrábida Bridge, Gustave Eiffel bridge 🌉, or the famous Foz do Douro, this small area where the Atlantic meets the Douro river. A passage through the small fishing village of Matosinhos will provide a change of scenery. The varied topography of the course offers runners an almost negative elevation on a round-trip course.
Another distinctive feature of the Porto Marathon is its warm atmosphere and the enthusiasm of the local spectators. The start and finish lines 🏁 of the marathon, located at Praia do Castelo do Queijo (next to the Parque da Cidade do Porto), a large urban park 🌳, provide a magnificent setting to celebrate the race. Runners are welcomed with finisher medals and an invaluable sense of achievement 🥇. Prizes are also awarded to the best male and female runners, as well as age categories. This event is a dream opportunity to share a sporting moment with friends!
Inhabitants turn out in droves to cheer on the runners throughout the course, reflecting the warm nature of the Portuguese 🥳. This race has a positive impact on the local community by encouraging sports and attracting visitors to Porto! 🧳 Since the circuit doesn't pass through the hypercenter, you must explore this great city on your own. This benefits the local restaurants which have to accommodate these thousands of hungry runners the evening after the race! Portuguese gastronomy is full of delights: the pastel de nata being the most well-known. Don't forget the essential stop at a bar to taste real Porto, a drink synonymous with a good weekend in the city 🍷. A Fado concert, a typical Portuguese music genre, will be organized for all participants: a reason to sing at the top of your lungs all evening before the next day's race 🎤.
This marathon is more than just a race; it is an unforgettable experience that combines sports, culture, and authentic landscapes. It attracts runners from all over the world thanks to its unique course, festive atmosphere 🍻, and rich history.
And if you're wondering if it's too much, we also have the Porto Half Marathon!
Want to know more about the Porto Marathon route? 😉 Eager to find out what you'll see during your run? Then keep reading a bit, we'll take you on the course! 💪
Starting line between the Parque da Cidade do Porto and the coast, towards Praia do Castelo do Queijo! 👀 You'll begin by circling the park and heading up to Porto de Leixões (the port of Matosinhos) 🚢. The first few km zigzag a bit, we won't hide that from you! Upon reaching the port, you'll pass in front of the drawbridge, the Ponte Movél de Leça 🌉. Once you've seen this medieval-inspired masterpiece, you'll use your little legs to head along the coast southward. A grand journey of 20 km awaits you, with a stunning view of the Atlantic to add an extra layer of charm. Once you arrive at the historic center of Porto 🚏, you'll cross the Pont Dom Luis. We hope you're not afraid of heights! Perched on its grand arch 🌁, you'll have a view of the entire Douro! You'll now be running on the soil of Vila Nova de Gaia. You'll be able to look back on the km already covered. 6 km will separate you from the Marina Afurada, where you'll need to turn around, to return to the bridge that will have you retracing your steps 👣. Be careful not to turn on the Pont de Arrabia ❌, remember, the route passes in front of it, but it's the next left for you! When you finally return to the Porto shore, you won't head straight to the finish line! And no, that would be too easy! First, you’ll take a little detour, heading inland. For about 5 km, you'll spot the Pont Infante Dom Henrique, as well as two small others, and the Quinta da China, a historic site surrounded by wonderful gardens. Don't take too much time enjoying the scenery! 🎍 You still have 20 km left, the same as those you covered on the way! When you’re at the Parque da Cidade, don’t circle around! Instead, pick up the pace to the finish line, it's right next to the Queimodromo! 🎊
If you start the 10 km in Porto (better known as APO Family Race Healthy Bones Run 🤓), the course description will surely interest you! You're in the right place to get a preview of your race 🏃.
For this distance, the start will be at the same place and at the same time as the marathon: 8 am at Praça de Gonçalves Zarco. Be careful, you won't head in the same direction as the 42.195 km runners! 🧭 The motto of your event: "run Forrest, run"! Indeed, the course is a straight out-and-back loop (a dream for breaking your PR 🏆). After looping around the starting square, you'll hit the pavement of Avenida do Brasil 🇧🇷. You can achieve your best time while enjoying the view of the Atlantic coast, the mouth of the Douro, and finally a view of the iconic Ponte Arrabida 🌉.
You will turn around before this bridge to go back up to the place where you started your race. Same course, same straight line. For the finish, the atmosphere will be at its peak 🎉 and you will have the chance to cross the finish line 🏁 in the Parque da Cidade 🌳.
For the 6 km Fun Race, no stress: you will follow the marathoners at the very beginning of their course (enough to get a glimpse of the main event of the day).
For you, it will also be a start at Praça de Gonçalves Zarco at 8am. After rounding the square, you'll take the straight line along the Parque da Cidade do Porto 🌳.
At km 3, you will take a small detour into the center of Matosinhos, a small straight back-and-forth to pick up a bit more speed before the finish ⚡.
You can then cross the finish line in the park that you would have observed during most of your route! Great atmosphere at the finish line 🥳.
