The event in a few words

Run, climb, carry, run, lift, crawl, run, ascend, cross
đŸ„” Now that is a race that makes you dream. Oh yes, the Spartan Zell am See-Kaprun doesn’t mess around when it comes to effort. No room for that little “I don’t feel like it, I’m lazy” moment—here, motivation and grit will rule đŸ’„. You’re coming to crawl through the mud and tackle the obstacles 🚧. The scene is set: we’re in the municipality of Kaprun, right in the heart of Austria, in the district of Zell am See. The weekend is pure madness—perfect for fully enjoying the month of September 🌞. Well, if you’re going to do an obstacle race, you might as well do it with the world leader, right? Come on—come become a true Spartan ⚔.

Basically, Spartan is THE race that will make you shake off the dust, have fun, and push past your limits đŸ”„. Fierce, tough, motivated, and determined: those are the qualities you’ll need. Add to that: trail-style running and obstacles of all kinds. Starting to picture it? Do you know 300? You know, the movie about the Battle of Thermopylae, where they seem superhuman and valiant on every front? đŸ«Ą Well, that’ll be a bit like you during this race. On the agenda: obviously running, but above all punctuated with original challenges. Don’t be scared by the English names you’ll see—since it originated in the United States, the obstacles all have English names! đŸ‡ș🇾 For example, the “Barbed tire crawl”: a crossing under barbed wire đŸȘ; “the Helix”: climbing a slanted wall; or the “Rope Climb”, which will test your ability to climb a rope đŸȘą. In short, you quickly understand that you’ll need real motivation to step up to the start line. Whether it’s to outdo yourself, prove something, or confirm what you’re made of, you definitely have a good reason to take on this challenge

Of course, there’s something for everyone—especially for all levels, so no excuses ❌. We start with the “Sprint”, explosive and quick: a 5 km race with 20 obstacles to clear. You can also raise the stakes with the “Super”, which sends you out on 10 km and 25 obstacles along the way. Finally, we move on to the legendary distances with the “Beast”: a 21 km with 30 obstacles scattered throughout (that’s quite the half marathon
). Then, I guess there are still true Spartans on Earth—and they’ve clearly understood that đŸ€Ł. That’s why there’s also the “Ultra 50” format! Yes, yes, you read that right: 50 km, 60 obstacles, and 3,000 m of elevation gain 😼. Oh yes—your legs will definitely be burning by the end. There’s really a way to leave as a sports beast. We did say it was “for everyone,” so you might as well test it from the youngest age with the "Kids Race" of 1 to 3 km with 10 to 20 obstacles! đŸ‘Š And by the way, with formats this crazy, you can do these races as a duo. Despite starting and finishing together, on the obstacles it’s only one of the two participants who will have to do them (it’s up to you whether you take turns đŸ€“).

For this Austrian edition, the scenery is breathtaking. With routes laid out in the heart of the mountains, elevation will definitely be part of the deal (especially for the ultra đŸ˜”). But elevation also means magnificent panoramas—especially of the Kitzsteinhorn glacier. This Spartan course will be alpine and one of the toughest in Europe, so you may end up with some serious calf soreness... đŸŠ” Oh yes—calling yourself a Spartan finisher has to be earned! ✹ To add an extra challenge, if within a calendar year (or in one weekend đŸ˜”â€đŸ’«) you finish a Sprint + Super + Beast, you can start collecting the Trifecta 🏅. A completely unique medal, assembled race by race. It will get you into an exclusive circle and, above all, forge a pure warrior mindset. Besides, to get it, you’d better take part in other races too! We recommend Spartan St.Pölten, Spartan Kulmbach, or Spartan Berlin. With that, you’ll have plenty to kick off your collection đŸ„‡.

For this edition in Kaprun, the post-race is just as interesting as everything else 😆. In this municipality, located right in the Pinzgau region in the state of Salzburg, there’s plenty to keep you busy if the race wasn’t enough (which it almost certainly will be đŸ«Ł). If the "Ultra 50" course will have a panoramic view of it, for the others, a tip: go check out the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier! This ski area in winter offers stunning landscapes đŸ€©. You can also swing by the reservoir and the Sigmund Thun Gorge. With all that, you’ll have spent plenty of energy—and it’ll obviously be time to recover. For that, nothing beats Kasnocken, a Schnitzel, or a real Apfelstrudel 🍎.

No time to slack off—the Spartan is waiting for you, along with your motivation and warrior mindset 😎.

A few more words

The Ultra 50, now that’s an ultra-powerful challenge. The plan is simple (well, sort of đŸ˜č): 50 km, 3,000 mD+ and 60 obstacles to conquer. Luckily, you’ll have a magnificent landscape—because given the effort you’re going to put in to finish it all, you’d better find some comfort somewhere... đŸ€“ At this distance, the obstacles will all be very different, such as:

  • Farmers carry (carrying two logs over a 10 m out-and-back, 18 kg for men and 9 kg for women)
  • Stairway to Sparta (climb to the top of a wooden wall and climb a ladder with a total height of 5 m)
  • Memory test (memorizing several pieces of information and recalling them a bit later on the course)
  • Pipe lair (making your way through a maze of metal pipes)
  • Swim / water crossing (swimming in water sections)
  • Multi-rig (crossing a 9 m-long structure using suspended rings, ropes, moving bars,...)

There’s a bit of everything—everything to push you to your limit and make you PUSH PAST IT! ☄
