Ready to face the mud, lift iron, and scale fortress walls? The Spartan Race circuit and its DEKA spin-offs are waiting for you across Europe to put your fitness to the test. The Spartan Race circuit is the ultimate meeting point for athletes who want to test their endurance, strength, and mindset against the elements. Born in the United States, this circuit has established itself as the absolute benchmark for obstacle racing worldwide. Whether you’re a determined competitor aiming to earn your qualification for the world championships or a fan of muddy challenges, the Spartan Race calendar offers you a deep dive into pushing your limits👇.

The story of this global phenomenon begins in 2010 in the lush mountains of Vermont 🇺🇸. Its founder, Joe De Sena, an ultra-endurance athlete with a will of steel, wanted to create a race format capable of pulling people out of their modern comfort zone 🛋️. Inspired by the rigor and resilience of the ancient Spartan warriors, he launched the very first Spartan Race 🔥. The concept took off immediately. In less than ten years, what was once a local challenge turned into a worldwide movement, codifying the discipline of obstacle racing and drawing millions of participants across every continent 🌍.

To master the Spartan circuit, you first have to understand its arsenal ⚔️. The events are split into three main formats, called the Trifecta if you manage to complete them within the same calendar year 📆. You start with the Sprint (more than 5 kilometers and 20 obstacles), ideal for getting started without getting wrecked 🪶. Then comes the Super (more than 10 kilometers and 25 obstacles), which seriously ups the ante by combining speed and endurance 💨. Finally, the Beast (more than 21 kilometers and 30 obstacles) takes you to your absolute limit on often mountainous terrain ⛰️. And watch out: every failed obstacle means a penalty in the form of Burpees or a penalty loop—enough to send your heart rate soaring in an instant! ❤️‍🔥 Know that the discipline demands complete physical preparation 💪. Unlike classic trail running you have to develop excellent grip strength (grip) so you don’t slip on hangs, ropes, or rings 🥵. It’s a full-body sport where versatility is your best weapon, blending pure running, CrossFit, and agility 🤸‍♂️. The atmosphere is electric, powered by the famous rallying cry “Aroo!” shouted by waves of runners at the start 🏁.

Spartan Race: the world leader in obstacle racing

The global calendar lets you travel through iconic destinations. In France, the flagship stop is unquestionably the Spartan Race Morzine 🏔️. Nestled right in the heart of the Alps, this mountain leg is known as one of the toughest in Europe, with its vertiginous elevation gains and endless log carries through icy torrents 🥶. It’s on terrain like this that elite athletes such as the Frenchman Grégory Basilico or Czech champion Zuzana Kocumová forged their legend, dominating the competition with their technical agility and impressive stride 😲.

If you prefer more urban and explosive formats, the circuit offers the Stadion version, held in legendary stadiums for football or rugby around the world. To close out the season, the world’s best meet each year at the Spartan World Championship, often held in the desert dunes of Abu Dhabi or the mountains of Lake Tahoe 🚤.

The start of the season ☃️

The season kicks off hard as early as late winter with the first indoor meetups and snowy challenges ❄️. In February, you open hostilities under the Spanish sun with the DEKA Torremolinos, perfect for testing your cardio on the circuit’s famous fitness stations. In March, the scenery changes radically: you break out the spikes for the Valmorel Spartan in Savoie 🫕. Running a Beast or a Sprint on ski slopes high in the mountains is a guarantee your legs will be on fire before you even reach the first obstacle! 😂 The same month, the calendar also offers an indoor spring alternative with DEKA Barcelona Primavera 🌸.

April marks the return of traditional outdoor formats on the continent 🤪. You can choose between the Rome Orte Spartan in Italy, known for its historic and technical courses 🇮🇹; the Spartan Munich in Germany in the heart of the famous Olympic Park 🇩🇪; or the Kojsovka Hola Spartan Trail, a pure trail running race with no obstacles in Slovakia 🇸🇰. For medal hunters, the Santa Domenica Trifecta in Oresje, Croatia, already lets you validate all three formats in a single spring weekend 🇭🇷.

Building momentum and the first peaks

In May, temperatures rise and the courses get longer 😵‍💫. It’s the perfect time to go and take on the Carcassonne Spartan in Occitanie, a race with a strong medieval feel where you run in the shadow of the famous citadel 🏰. In Spain, Madrid Spartan meets you on the rolling terrain of San Agustín del Guadalix, while England welcomes you to the London West Spartan in Henley-on-Thames, along the Thames 💧.

June is the month of superlatives, with the arrival of the great Alpine peaks and endurance formats 😎. This is when the legendary World's Toughest Mudder takes place in Grantham in the United Kingdom, an extreme 24-hour non-stop mud challenge 🟤. If you prefer altitude, you’re spoiled for choice: the Sainte Croix Spartan Trifecta in Switzerland, the Encamp Andorra Spartan in the heart of the Andorran Pyrenees, or the Spartan Belluno Nevegal in the Italian Dolomites 🤩. To wrap up this intense June, you can also line up for the St Pölten Spartan in Austria, the DEKA Vigo on the Galician coast, or the Scotland Spartan Event in Queensferry, facing the legendary bridges of the Forth ⚓️.

The summer season 🌞

July means high mountains and world championships 🧨. It’s time for the peak of the French season: the Spartan Race Morzine, which hosts this year’s Morzine Spartan Ultra World Championship 👊. On the menu for elite athletes: 50 kilometers, 60 obstacles, and a monstrous Alpine elevation gain to swallow (or spit back up 🤮). If you love Austria’s mountains, the Zell am See Kaprun Spartan Trifecta & Ultra Weekend offers an equally demanding challenge at the foot of the glaciers. For more explosive formats or ones focused on pure fitness, you can look to the Szombathely Spartan in Hungary, the DEKA Madrid, or the Manchester DEKA Ignite on British soil 🍮.

In August, the heat is in full swing but the circuit doesn’t let up ❌. Fans of pure endurance meet in Belgium for De Schorre Boom Hurricane Heat Endurance, a military-style format built around team cohesion and mental fortitude 🧠. Classic obstacle races will take you to Spartan Berlin in Klaistow amid Germany’s forests, to Liberec Spartan in the Czech Republic, or to the Limerick Spartan in Patrickswell, Ireland 🇮🇪. If you’re looking for a prestigious historic setting, the South West Spartan Event held on the estate of Badminton in the United Kingdom will win you over 🏸. Late August belongs to the mountain lovers with the Bielsko Biala Ultra Trifecta in Poland.

The autumn of major championships 🍂

September opens the final straight of the season with must-attend events for French-speaking fans 🇫🇷. It’s the return of Paris Jablines Spartan, a fast and very popular race on the Île-de-France leisure base, ideal for testing yourself on sand and in the water 🐳. Across the Channel, you’ll find London South East Spartan, the fitness events of the East Midlands DEKA Mile & Fit in Derby, as well as the Tarnow Trail in Poland 🇵🇱. For mountain fans, the Verbier Spartan Trifecta in Switzerland offers a demanding Alpine course amid the panoramas of Valais 🐐. In Spain, athletes meet up for DEKA Barcelona Otono, while Italy hosts the Spartan Misano Adriatico on the coast for a weekend combining beach and obstacles by the seaside 🌊. To end the month, head to Romania for the Sovata Spartan 🇷🇴.

October is traditionally the month of world finals and major continental titles 🤝. The European highlight takes place in the Var for the Esterel Saint Raphael Spartan European Championship, in Le Dramont📍. The best athletes on the continent battle it out on the red rocks of the Esterel massif 🍒. On the world stage, Croatia hosts the Hvar 100 Meter & Sprint World Championship, an ultra-short, TV-friendly format for the planet’s most agile sprinters 🏋️‍♀️. It’s also at the end of October that the annual pilgrimage takes place: the Sparta Trifecta World Championship in Greece, on the original land of King Leonidas 🇬🇷. At the same time, you can take part in the Santa Susanna Barcelona Spartan, the Spartan Trail Croatia, the Spartan Trifecta Krvavec in Slovenia, the Lipno Spartan in the Czech Republic, or commit to the fitness events DEKA GuadalajaraDEKA Alicante or DEKA Tenerife in the Canary Islands 🐥.

The final push in November 🏆

The season ends on grit in November, in the rain, the chill, or indoors for the last points of the year 😴. Fans of the military format meet on the legendary Belgian motor racing circuit for the Hurricane Heat Weekend Francorchamps, an event where mindset definitively takes precedence over muscles 💪. It’s also the month of the last warm DEKA sessions, notably the Geneva DEKA Fit in Switzerland, the London West DEKA Trifecta in Farnborough, or the DEKA Tenerife if you’re looking to escape the gloom ☁️. Finally, for the year’s last outdoor obstacle races, the brave will meet at the Sesimbra Spartan in Portugal, the Spartan Gubbio in Italy, the Krahule Spartan in Slovakia, or the Pomaz Spartan in Hungary 🇭🇺.

And that’s it—the Spartan Races circuit season is over! Well then, there’s nothing left to do but get on with it! As for us, we’ll sit this one out...😅
