Île makes for great cycling in France

The leading economic region of Europe with its 12 million inhabitants, the Île-de-France hides its true nature beneath its hyper-connected metropolitan façade. Behind the skyscrapers and highways lies a paradise for cyclists hungry for asphalt and forest trails 🚴‍♀️. Its 8 departments are brimming with unsuspected routes just waiting for you, your legs, and your bike!🔥

On its 12,000 km2, Île-de-France offers a beautiful diversity of terrains for playing. Its 8 departments (Paris, Seine-et-Marne, Yvelines, Essonne, Hauts-de-Seine, Seine-Saint-Denis, Val-de-Marne, Val-d'Oise) each offer their own specialties for cyclists. So put on your cycling shorts and get ready for a two-wheeled adventure that inevitably begins in the capital! Paris! ⭐️ The City of Light is discovered differently from a bicycle seat 🚴. Regulars of the Quais de Seine will not contradict you, with these long cycle paths lined with plane trees 🌳. The Canal de l'Ourcq can offer you a great escape to the northeast of Paris. Head west, and you'll find the majestic Château of Versailles, built by Louis XIV, awaiting you at the end of a beautiful ride 🏰.

Parisian monuments flow by at the rhythm of your pedal strokes. From the Sacré-Cœur overlooking Montmartre to the Eiffel Tower built for the World Fair, each outing lets you rediscover the capital from a different angle. The Arc de Triomphe on the Champs-Élysées, the Panthéon with its illustrious residents, and the Pont Alexandre III are just some of the landmarks that mark your training sessions 📍. You can imagine that the list of remarkable sites is as long as the Rue de Vaugirard… It's impossible to name them all! 😅

A historical heritage at every turn

The Île-de-France reveals its treasures well beyond the beltway! The royal forests are the true green lungs of the region. Fontainebleau, a playground of kings since the Middle Ages, offers thousands of hectares of forest paths. Rambouillet and its ponds invite long distance rides. Further north, Montmorency and Sénart complete this exceptional forest network that allows you to escape without really leaving the region. Provided, of course, that you know when to stop! 😏

The Regional Natural Parks preserve remarkable landscapes. The French Vexin with its blonde stone villages, the Haute-Vallée de Chevreuse with its winding roads, the Oise-Pays de France and its castles provide a varied playground for cyclists of all levels.

History is written in the open air on the roads of Île-de-France. The Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte is worth a visit in itself. Built for Nicolas Fouquet, its splendor stirred the jealousy of Louis XIV so much that it inspired the creation of Versailles. The Basilica of Saint-Denis, necropolis of the kings of France, tells over a thousand years of royal history. The medieval town of Provins, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, will immerse you in the atmosphere of the great Champagne fairs of the 13th century 🌹.

At a turn in the road, you might come across the Château de Vincennes with its imposing medieval keep, or the Domain of Sceaux. Each department reserves its own historical gems 🏛️.

Francilien cyclosportives: between performance and discovery

A cyclosportive is more than just a simple bike ride. This discipline combines endurance, self-improvement, and conviviality on timed routes. Unlike cycle touring, which prioritizes leisurely exploration, a cyclosportive offers a true sporting challenge with a ranking 🏆.

The 35 km of the Périph-Grand Paris will take you around the major roads surrounding the capital, with the option of a run or a cyclosportive! 😍

Île-de-France hosts a dense schedule of cyclosportives suitable for all levels. The Bocage Gâtinais in Seine-et-Marne lets you explore the Gâtinais with its 95 km and 142 km routes. The Raymond Martin in Essonne offers formats from 95 to 150 km through the southern Parisian outskirts and its beautiful homes. In the same department, the Jacques Gouin Cyclosportive in Mennecy challenges you on 115 km of rolling hills. The Versailles - Deauville, that's a whole other ball game: about 260 km to the seaside in Normandy. In the same spirit, you can participate in the GravelMan Series Paris-Deauville, which can be done either on gravel or as a cyclosportive 😉.

Routes between city and nature

Perfect for both urban settings and country escapes, Île-de-France guarantees a change of scenery. After completing a cyclosportive, why not extend the experience by exploring the surroundings? The Domaine de Trianon with its French gardens is worth spending a few hours at. In Maisons-Laffitte, the historic racecourse carries on the equestrian tradition, while the forest of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, a royal forest since the time of Francis I, provides kilometers of perfect training paths 🏇.

The Vallée de Chevreuse unveils countryside landscapes that delight Île-de-France cyclists. The roads wind between fields and charming villages where time seems suspended ⏳. The French Gâtinais lives up to its nickname "land of a thousand clearings and sandstone" with its preserved agricultural panoramas and forests. The village of Barbizon also deserves a stop 🏘️. Some of the greatest landscape painters of the 19th century, like Théodore Rousseau and Jean-François Millet, immortalized this particular light 🎨. The banks of the Marne offer flat routes ideal for recovery or working on basic endurance while following the river's meanders. If your legs are super strong and you keep going along its banks, you'll end up directly in Champagne 🤣.

Formats for all profiles

Île-de-France's topography often surprises newcomers. The Hauts-de-Seine and the Val-d'Oise offer short and steep climbs that seriously test your thighs. The Essonne alternates between rolling routes around its ponds and hilly sectors that spice up the rides. The Val-de-Marne meanders between urban areas and green spaces. You can also combine cycling with family fun at Parc Astérix in Plailly. This second French amusement park delights both young and old after the effort. Say hi to Obélix for us as you pass by! 🙃

Cyclosportive formats cover the entire range of distances. Start with "discovery" formats of 50 km or less to build confidence. Move on to medium distances of 80-100 km, which form the heart of the discipline. Test yourself on long distances of 120-150 km, which require genuine preparation. The toughest will tackle ultra-long distances of 200 km and more, which are a true physical and mental challenge 🤯.

The gastronomic reward

After the effort comes the reward! Île-de-France specialties will efficiently reinvigorate great cyclists. Brie from Meaux has delighted taste buds for centuries, with legend having it that Charlemagne loved it. Its cousin, Brie from Melun, older and bolder, appeals to fans of pronounced flavors. The Paris mushrooms, cultivated in old quarries for centuries, still adorn many regional dishes.

On the pastry side, the Paris-Brest deserves a special mention. Baker Louis Durand created it specifically for the eponymous cycling race, paying homage to cyclists with its wheel shape. The Tarte Bourdaloue with pears comforts after long rides. The creamy flan pastry is the ultimate comfort on rainy Sundays. The Opera cake with its chocolate ganache layers perfectly concludes the feast! 😋

Whether you're looking for a cyclosportive in Paris, in Seine-et-Marne, the largest department of the region, in Yvelines with its castles, in Essonne with its forests 🌲, in Hauts-de-Seine, in Seine-Saint-Denis, in Val-de-Marne or in the Val-d'Oise with its natural park, Île-de-France offers a fantastic playground for all cyclists! 👌
