Come feel the altitude change in the land of the Greens

You might think the 42 is limited to a legendary football team and former coal mines, but let me tell you, you're on the wrong track, my friend. This department of nearly 4800 km² is a true wild playground for nature lovers seeking to challenge their legs and dazzle their eyes 🌿. Here, we don't joke about effort, but we do know how to welcome you with a warmth that will make you instantly forget your cramps and blisters 🔥. Whether you're a pure climber or a fan of rolling trails, the trail in the Loire has some big surprises and a unique atmosphere that you won't find anywhere else, take it from an expert.

Between coal and chlorophyll, an unexpected playground

If you come running here, prepare to hear the "Gaga," a Stéphanois dialect as delightful as a cold post-race beer 🍺. If a volunteer yells for you to watch out for the "babet," don't look for a local Loch Ness monster, it's just a pine cone lying on the trail! Saint-Étienne, the prefecture, has transformed its industrial past into a present focused on design and culture, much like you when you swap your old torn jogging pants for cutting-edge compression gear 👕. The climate is semi-continental, meaning it can be very hot in the Forez plain in summer and freezing cold on the crests in winter, so manage your equipment well ❄️. Keep an eye out for biodiversity, as the Pilat Regional Natural Park is home to protected species like the Eurasian Eagle-Owl and even some signs of the wolf's return, enough to motivate you to run faster if you hear something suspicious in the bushes 🐺.

The Pilat and the Forez, your new best friends

Geography-wise, you're in for a treat with the Loire Gorges meandering majestically and the peaks of the Pilat watching you from afar like peace judges 🔭. It's in this area that you'll find the famous Crêt de la Perdrix, the highest point of the massif at 1432 meters altitude, ideal for working on your VMA on hilly terrain. Don't forget that this department was the site of the first railway line in France in 1827 between Saint-Étienne and Andrézieux, so run like a steam locomotive on the singles 🚂. If you’re looking for a nature race, in the forest or the mountain, you'll be thrilled by the diversity of landscapes, ranging from beech-fir forests to high-altitude moors that sometimes resemble the Scottish Highlands, minus the rain (well, it depends on the day) 🌧️.

Gastronomy and history: running smart with a full belly

Afraid of hitting a wall at the thirtieth kilometer? Impossible here, because local gastronomy is the best fuel in the world (according to a non-scientific study conducted by myself). You can mentally recharge by thinking about a slice of Praluline, a brioche with pink pralines originating from Roanne that gives you more energy than a doubtful chemical gel 🍬. And if you prefer savory, the Fourme from Montbrison awaits you at the finish line to replenish your calcium and healthy fat stocks 🧀. The department also hosts the largest Le Corbusier site in Europe at Firminy, proof that you can love architectural concrete and virgin forest at the same time 🏗️. Regarding the altitude change, don't underestimate the Monts du Forez, because even though they're not the Alps, they'll make your calves burn just enough to remind you that you're alive ⚡. It's also the land of Honoré d'Urfé, author of "L'Astrée," the first novel of French literature, which is ironic, given you'll likely cross many streams with wet feet 💧.

Trail legends and mythical races

Speaking of champions, the 42 has talent to spare and lungs of steel. We can't help but think of Adeline Roche, originally from Roanne and world trail champion, who wore out her shoes on these same trails before conquering the world, a true source of inspiration for us all 🌍. To follow in her footsteps, check out the trail calendar that is packed with must-see gems. You can't miss the legendary SaintéLyon, the oldest ultra race linking Saint-Étienne to Lyon at night, a frozen and muddy adventure every trail runner must experience at least once to understand mixed pain and joy 🔦. If you prefer running during the day, the Pilat Trail in Véranne offers you breathtaking views over the Rhône Valley and the Alps in the distance. The Trail des Balcons de la Loire in Chambles is an absolute must for its plunging views over the river, as is the Trail de la Fourme which combines sport and terroir in a festive atmosphere 🐮. Finally, the Trail des 7 Monts lets you discover the surroundings of Septème with a challenging yet magnificent course.

In short, whether you're here to win or to visit this department named after the longest river in France (even if it just passes through, the show-off), you're sure to find a race in the Loire that suits you. All you have to do is choose your challenge, train a little (or a lot) and book a bib to fully experience the Stéphanois adventure without looking back 🎫.
