The event in a few words

Four kilometers uphill, four downhill, and then nothing: the rest is flat, or pretty much 😜. The Zagreb Marathon may play the fast-course card, but it doesn’t mislead you about what you’re getting. With such a gently contoured profile, the Croatian capital has earned a reputation as a record-setting track, one of the fastest on the continent. The Zagrebački Maraton, its official name, unfurls every October its long, straight avenues through the center of Zagreb, capital of Croatia, set in the northwest of the country 🇭🇷. The start and finish take place on Ban Jelačić Square, the great central square around which all urban life revolves. The marathon shares the bill with a half, a 10K and a relay, not to mention the kids’ races that take over the square the day before the big one.

It all began in 1992, driven by the Veterans Athletics Association, with 70 runners crossing the finish line, including only 4 women. The early years found their footing, tweaked the route, tested formats. The breakthrough came in 2004: the organization brought the start/finish back right into the city center, on Ban Jelačić Square, and set the turnaround points in the Dubrava and Črnomerec districts. The arrival of the half marathon the following year boosted attendance, and twenty years after its creation, the field was fifteen times larger than at the first edition 😱. The course records still date back to 2017, set by two Kenyans: Wycliffe Kipkorir Biwott for the men in 2:09:55, and Stellah Barsosio for the women in 2:30:15. A detail that spices things up: the men’s record was set during Biwott’s fourth win in Zagreb, which is itself a record for the race 🌶️.

As for the route, the Zagreb Marathon embraces its east–west loop logic along the major avenues. The course heads east to Dubrava and west to Črnomerec, with two laps for marathoners versus just one for half-marathoners. 😅 Above all, it delivers a killer argument: with very little elevation gain and virtually no sharp turns, the course ranks among the fastest in the world 🚀. The straight boulevards run past the Gothic cathedral, cut through Austro-Hungarian façades inherited from the 19th century, and offer a clear, readable route that helps the legs as much as the mind 🧘.

The only Croatian marathon to hold the World Athletics label, it remains the country’s only race that qualifies for the Olympic Games, the World Championships and the European Championships. Its affiliation with the Abbott World Marathon Majors also makes it a qualifier for Boston, Chicago, New York, London, Berlin, Tokyo and Sydney. In 2026, Zagreb even takes it a step further by hosting the World Masters Marathon Championships on this very same course. The event is run on an autumn Sunday, in a city that knows how to play host 🙌. The crowd lines the course, music livens up the central square, and the celebration spills well beyond the finish line.

Once the bib is put away, Zagreb can be enjoyed without running. The pedestrian street Tkalčićeva, lined with terraces, is waiting for you to knock back kavas, those short, strong coffees that Croatians have turned into a way of life ☕️. Just above the square, the Dolac Market reveals its vegetable stalls 🥒, its cheeses from the island of Pag, and its butchers with voices that carry 🔊. In the Upper Town, St. Mark’s Church and its multicolored glazed-tile roof are a reminder that the Croatian capital has real historical depth. After 42 km pounding its avenues, it’s safe to say you rarely leave without a little urge to come back 😋.
