The event in a few words

Those who know Budapest inevitably keep wonderful memories of their visit to the capital of Hungary 🇭🇺, exceptionally rich in all kinds of architecture and heritage ✨. So we imagine you’ll be motivated by the idea of taking part in the Budapest Half Marathon, in September. This city race takes you to discover one of the most beautiful European capitals. After all, it’s not nicknamed the “pearl of the Danube for nothing! 💍 And to explore it, you can choose between two distances: a 10 km and a half marathon, to run solo or in a relay of 2 or 3 🤝.

Budapest was born in 1873 with the merger of Buda, a former capital 🌆, with Pest and Obuda 🔥. For a very long time, the city has been an important political and economic center of Central Europe. One feature of the city you shouldn’t miss: its extraordinary historic pools 🏊‍♀️, which will quickly become your best memory of urban bathing... We especially recommend the views over the Danube River, the district of Buda’s castle 🏰 and its metro (the second-oldest in the world after London). All these ingredients make Budapest a capital like no other. What’s more, the metro is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site 🌍. Travelers aren’t mistaken: the city is very popular, with 4.3 million visitors each year...

Take advantage of it to go out and explore more of the country! Neighboring Austria, with which it shared its history (the famous Austro-Hungarian Empire), it also shares some mountain ranges ⛰️. The Duna-Ipoly National Park, located north of Budapest, will welcome you for a breath of fresh air after your race 🏃‍♀️. Lake Balaton, located more in the center of the country, is the largest lake in Europe. An outing that might even let you run in beautiful open spaces and get your legs ready to take part in the famous Budapest Marathon... 😏

This is the beginning of a great adventure!

4 reasons to join this race

Discover Budapest 😍
Hungary’s capital has long been one of Europe’s most important cities, no doubt because of its central position on the continent’s map 🗺️. The result is a city that’s incredibly rich culturally, which you’ll be able to discover with family or friends! Remember to set aside some time for the baths...
And what about wine? 🍷
Did you know Hungary is a wine country? The country’s vineyards benefit from favorable weather, and Hungarian winemakers have managed to help their vines thrive. If you weren’t warned, you’ll be surprised! In moderation, of course ☝️.
Extend summer 😎
Running in early September in Hungary, and especially in Budapest, is a chance to extend summer and enjoy a city devoted to epicureanism and pleasure 🥰.
From the Sziget Festival to the half? 🤔
There’s a month between the two events, that’s true. But we couldn’t avoid the topic of the Sziget Festival, Europe’s biggest music festival! 6 days of partying on Óbuda Island, on the banks of the Danube, right in the heart of Budapest. A gathering that always features the biggest names in contemporary music. A crazy combo in prospect? 😜

A few more words

And we're off for the big start! The banks of the Danube, right in the heart of Budapest, will see a long procession set off.

Before the 3rd km, you'll have caught sight of the Citadella Fortress, a symbol of the city, built in 1848 😍. Your first refreshment station (out of a total of 6) is planned at the 4th km 🥤. You'll already have seen 4 major bridges on the river, on the side of Margaret Island, which is itself a little green islet. The river, which rises in Germany 🇩🇪, will be at the heart of your run.

At the 10th km, you'll finally cross it, thanks to the Árpád Bridge, which will allow you to reach the famous island. 3 km and a good breath of oxygen in the forest later, you'll be back on the banks for the final straight of the race! 💪 Indeed, a long, final straight section will be waiting for you to reach the finish, located on the opposite bank. You'll therefore take one last bridge, opposite the Budapest Central Market Hall, to reach the finish line 🏁.
