The event in a few words

Biscan pas! In Sète slang, the expression means “don’t complain”, and a path on Mont Saint-Clair even bears that name 😅 . Keep it in mind, you’ll use it often on the 1,000 Steps of Sète! Head to Sète, the “singular island” dear to Paul Valéry, set between the Mediterranean and the Étang de Thau, in Hérault in Occitanie 🌊 . Up until 1928, the city was actually spelled “Cette”: enough to make this race doubly Sète-ish. The date falls in mid-December, when the port city has put away its water jousting and its beach towels 🏖️ . Winter in Sète stays rather mild, with temperatures often hovering around 10°C, though with no promise of clear blue skies. Up on the heights, the tramontane loves to show up without a bib: slip a windbreaker into your bag, it’s never read the rules 🧥 .

Forget long ridgelines: the 14 km loop here threads through a maze of alleys, staircases and steep paths that climb Mont Saint-Clair, the 175 m hill watching over the city 🪜 . With around 640 mD+ on the menu, you’ll climb the equivalent of more than three and a half times its height! 🤯 Converted into effort km, the flagship unit of fast hiking (distance plus elevation gain divided by 100), the counter shows around twenty effort km. The route leaves the Corniche on the seafront side, climbs toward the pine grove of the Forêt des Pierres Blanches, then tips onto the north slope, facing the oyster beds of the lagoon 🦪 . Next comes the assault on the summit cross via demanding staircases, a plunge toward the Mont-Saint-Clair lighthouse and then one last climb facing the sea, with the lido and Agde in your sights 👀 .

Concept-wise, the 1,000 Steps of Sète clearly break the mould 🏙️ . Conceived by the Sète Escapade club, affiliated with FFRandonnée, together with the City of Sète, this 1,000-step Challenge brings speed hiking right into the city centre, away from traffic. No timing and no ranking: you join one of the three effort-pace groups (5, 5.5 or 6 km/h-e), then your pacer’s job is to bring the whole group to the line, right on target 🎯 . The rules don’t mess around with team spirit: the finish only counts when the entire group passes through, leader included 🤝 . At the end, a Gold, Silver or Bronze finisher “Pouffre” depending on your pace, a nod to the octopus, star of Sète plates 🏅 . Poles forbidden, full self-sufficiency and a place on the Fast Hiking Tour calendar of FFRandonnée: the format is aimed at sport hikers, Nordic walkers and trail runners looking for a new kind of challenge, from age 15.

Once you’re back down, it’s time for the local food 🥧 . In Sète, octopus is called “pouffre” and fills the tielle, a pie with spicy tomato sauce that arrived from Gaeta, in Italy, at the end of the 19th century: after the Gold Pouffre, the octopus pie! The most sea-loving will try the oysters and mussels from the lagoon, those very ones whose farming tables you’ll have overlooked from the north slope. On the culture side, the lighthouse overlooks the marine cemetery where Valéry rests, and lines of the poet are engraved at the foot of the tower 📜 . Near the start, the Corniche beach inspired Georges Brassens to write his Supplique pour être enterré à la plage de Sète 🎶 . A local swears he swallowed the 114 steps of the Craque staircase without breaking a sweat? Smile politely: in local speech, a “craque” means a tall tale! 😏 Have the steps given you a taste for the local relief? The Sète Urban Trail offers another way to tame the singular island, at a running pace this time.

Valéry wrote it in Le Cimetière marin: “The wind is rising!... We must try to live!” Translation for your calves: the tramontane is rising? Biscan pas, you have to try to climb! 💨

4 reasons to join this race

Fast hiking right in the city centre 🏘️
No need to head for the mountains to string together surges: the playground lies in the very heart of Sète, between hidden alleyways, quirky staircases and unlikely passages 🔍 . All of it away from traffic, on a track your pacer keeps an eye on at all times. Fast, enduring, light, self-sufficient and friendly: the organisers prove that the fast hiking spirit can flourish in the city too.
A Sète-style leg-burner 🦵
Managing your effort on stairs can’t be improvised: surge after surge, the thighs burn and the heart rate shoots up 🔥 . Poles remain forbidden, so there’s no cheating with your arms: your strategy and your calves will make all the difference. Over 14 km and around 640 mD+, the effort is managed very differently than out in nature: that’s where the real spice of the challenge lies.
Sète to all four points of the compass 🧭
Étang de Thau and its oyster beds to the north, the Mediterranean to the south, the port and lighthouse to the east, the lido running toward Agde to the south-west: Mont Saint-Clair dishes out viewpoints at every landing 📸 . In clear weather, your gaze can reach all the way to the Pyrenees. Enough to forget, for a moment, that the next flight of steps is already waiting for you 😬 .
A pouffre at the end of the effort 🐙
Here, no classic medal: you earn a finisher « Pouffre » in Gold, Silver or Bronze depending on the pace group you chose 🥇 . No ranking and no time to beat, just a shared objective that the whole group crosses together, pacer in front. The celebration continues at Les Quilles with a refreshment station and music 🎉 .

A word from the organiser:

"A real challenge for a discipline that is meant to be free on the trails. Here being Fast, Enduring, Light, Self-sufficient and Friendly will make perfect sense—and surprisingly, in the city you can also do ... Fast Hiking."

A few more words

Meet at Les Quilles, at the Françoise Pascal watersports base, set on the Corniche facing the sea. After the briefing, the groups set off toward the Pierres Blanches and the first climb sets the tone: the profile won’t let up again until the finish 😤 . According to legend, the seven daughters of the king of the Thau lagoon turned into white stones the onlookers who ogled them: keep your eyes on the track 🪨 . The route then tips over to the north side, with a plunging view over the Thau lagoon, before the ascent to the cross via demanding staircases. At the top, around 175 m, the Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette chapel greets you as you pass ⛪ . The descent then heads toward the lighthouse, port side, and then the surges come one after another through steep alleys where a little trotting sometimes helps you hold the pace. Then comes the famous Rue de la Pipe, whose name is said to evoke the many pipe-smoking locals of Sète, or an old port measure for wine and oil 🍷 . One last climb offers you a wide-angle panorama over the sea, the lido and Agde, before returning to Les Quilles, where musical refreshments await the groups 🎺 . Summary: 14 km, about 640 mD+ and roughly twenty km effort—a short format but a tough one to manage as a group from the first to the last meter.
