Adiu! 👋 In the Lot, white gravel roads are everywhere, and Lot of Gravel has decided to turn them into a feast 🍽️. This gravel ride adventure links, in early June, Cahors, the prefecture nestled in a bend of the river, to Figeac and Rocamadour, on the northern fringes of Occitanie. At that time of year, the Quercy sun gladly hands out its rays ☀️, and long days leave plenty of room to rack up the km. Still, tuck a windshell into the bottom of your bags: late-afternoon thunderstorms like to crash the causses without warning ⛈️.
The routes mix small country roads, rural paths, forest tracks and more technical sections—the dream playground for gravel in Occitanie 🚵. First pedal strokes at the foot of Pont Valentré, a fortified 14th-century bridge whose legend says it was completed thanks to a pact with the devil 😈. Then it’s on to the Quercy causses: limestone plateaus, dry-stone walls, shepherd huts and stunted oaks 🌳. The terrain alternates rolling stretches on the plateaus, dives into valleys and punchy climbs that burn the thighs. Depending on your format, you’ll reach Rocamadour, a sacred town hanging from its cliff, or the hilltop village of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie. On the full format, the 450 km add up to around 7,000 m of elevation gain ⛰️.
Here, no watch can keep up—this is an untimed adventure: the event is experienced with no ranking, no podium and no official time, at whatever pace you choose 🧭. The bikepacking spirit guides the whole adventure, with self-supported navigation thanks to the GPX track and base camps set up in Rocamadour and then Saint-Cirq-Lapopie to park the bike, share a meal and sleep in group accommodation 🏕️. Four formats open the door to every profile, from the 60 km discovery loop to the 450 km ultra, via a 100 km and a 225 km. Gravel, MTB, cyclocross or e-bike: everyone chooses their ride 🚲. At the helm, 2J Performance and SoEvent focus on friendliness and respect for a territory that is sometimes crossed thanks to exceptional access permissions on private land 🤝.
After the effort, the Quercy treats you. A glass of Cahors wine, that famous “black wine” born of malbec, pairs perfectly with a little goat’s rocamadour 🍷. In Figeac, the hometown of Champollion, the Place des Écritures displays a giant replica of the Rosetta Stone, good training for deciphering the hieroglyphs on your GPS screen 📜. A few pedal strokes from Rocamadour, the Padirac Chasm offers a boat ride into the belly of the causse, just the thing to cool down your calves 🛶.
No scratch cards, no lottery: at Lot of Gravel, the big win is earned one pedal stroke at a time! 🎰
A word from the organizer:
"Set off to discover the Lot by bike! Whether you’re here to push yourself, explore new paths, or simply enjoy the adventure, Lot of Gravel takes you through the landscapes and iconic roads of the Lot. Several formats are offered so everyone can experience it at their own pace, on a gravel bike or an e-bike. Get your bags, your GPS and your best pedal stroke ready: the adventure awaits you!"
The full Lot of Gravel sets off from the Pont Valentré for 450 km and around 7,000 mD+ self-supported 🏁. The route takes participants on a big tour around the Lot area, with a first base camp in Rocamadour and then a second in Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, perched above the Lot valley ⛺. Country roads, rural tracks, forest trails and technical sections follow one another, by day and by night. The elevation gain, spread across a multitude of short climbs rather than big passes, wears down the legs little by little 🦵. Managing sleep, nutrition, and navigation is an integral part of the challenge. Final return to Cahors, at the end of a true grand tour 🎉.
Where the direct route settles for about sixty kilometers, the track offers a 225 km detour through the causses 😅. This long-distance gravel format winds across the plateaus of the Quercy, terrain well known to the trail runners of the Ultra Trail Causses et Vallées, between white gravel tracks, oak woods and stone hamlets 🪨. It strings together descents into the valleys and punchy climbs back out, without ever a major mountain pass. The duration of the effort means riding part of the night and managing your stops in the villages well 🥖. Finish in Rocamadour, whose sanctuaries clinging to the cliff reward even the most battered legs 🙏.
Setting off from Figeac, Champollion’s hometown, for a crossing of the department from east to west all the way to Cahors, in the medium-distance gravel format 🧳. The route follows the Célé valley and its cliffs before joining the Lot valley, with regular climbs back up to the limestone plateaus. Part of the course is ridden at night: powerful lighting then becomes your best teammate 💡. The final km drop down toward Cahors, where the Valentré Bridge marks the end of the crossing 🌉.
A loop starting and finishing in Cahors, designed to get a taste of discovery gravel without redlining 🌱. To get out of the Lot valley, there’s no way around it: the track first climbs up to the heights, with beautiful views over the river’s meander 🌄. Once on the causse, the profile becomes more rolling, weaving between stony paths, dry-stone walls, and quiet little roads. The difficulty stays moderate, with no long technical section. Back to Cahors to celebrate on a terrace, just a stone’s throw from Saint-Étienne Cathedral ⛪.
