The Trail of Haute Provence is preparing this year for its 11th edition! ๐ After blowing its first ten candles last year it's time for the THP to get back to serious business. ๐๏ธ So, we hope you have a strong heart, because it's going to climb! โฌ๏ธ Forcalquier, a lovely commune in Provence-Alpes-Cรดte dโAzur, welcomes you in the month of May for the Trail of Haute Provence (THP) ๐ธ. Not just any time, during the Ascension weekend! No more excuses, you already know your schedule for the holiday! The climate will (hopefully) be mild and springy โ๏ธ. To give you a preview of what to expect, the city's motto is: "higher than the Alps". One thing is for sure, your calves are going to burn! ๐ฅต
Before definitely scaring tempting you, let's quickly set the scene. Forcalquier will be your starting point ๐. Situated at the edge of the Via Domitia, in the heart of the Luberon and the Lure mountain โฐ, this historic commune, located at 651 m of altitude, has it all. Purely Provenรงal charm to give you a beautiful foretaste of all the treasures your race holds... ๐
Regarding distances, let's just say you will have choices. 10 events are organized during the Trail of Haute Provence, so rest assured you will find a challenge that fits ๐ฆถ. Small and cute, the "Forcalquier Challenge" 10 km, is the baby of the event to be done solo or with your company thanks to the "THP10 pro" format. The "THP20", with its 21 km, is eagerly awaiting you to explore its trails ๐ณ. Otherwise, you can challenge yourself on "THP30" and its 28 km or the "THP 40" and its 39 km that will make you sweat ๐ฅต. The "THP50", "THP65" and the 79 km of the "THP80" will also open their doors to you (also doable in relay). Then, the "THP120", a nice 120 km for the brave. Itโs up to you to see if youโre ready to cross them ๐. Finally, the (very) big chunk ๐ฅฉ: "THP160", with its 160 km and its 7,000 mD+ (ahhhh!) ๐ฑ. If you are really too scared, there is the "THP160" in relay! Let's not lie, it's demanding and you will need to be trained! If you're still a trail newbie ๐ง, no worries, you can turn to the "THP solidarity" and its 10 km to be done walking or running. And finally a Nordic walk of 10 km is offered! In any case, regardless of the distance chosen, it's in the middle of nature ๐ณ that you will complete your THP event. Between ridges, rocky corners, typically Provenรงal vegetation ๐ชป you will be amazed! ๐ If you opt for "THP160", it will certainly be very physically demanding, but you will enjoy breathtaking views of the peaks ๐. You will also pass on the Lure mountain and its very welcoming fauna. Some deer, roe deer, and foxes roam it regularly ๐ฆ. In short, you might almost forget the elevation! ๐ And the cherry on the cake is that there are even races for the kiddos: the "THP awakening" of 500 m for those aged 3 to 9, the "THP discovery" of 1 km for those aged 10 to 11, the "THP junior" and the "THP teen" of 3km for those aged 12 to 15.
After your race, if you have some strength left, we suggest visiting the land of Giono, the dream Provence, and its picturesque places. And in Forcalquier there are plenty of places to discover: the Citadel, the old town, or the narrow alleys are just some of the things you can admire during your visit. If you want to rest your legs, sit on a terrace and enjoy the spring sun while savoring a local pastis, always with moderation! ๐ฅ
"The Ultra of Provence" is the longest and most complex event of this full-scale experience. 168 km, 7,400 mD+, we can assure you, your calves will be on fire! ๐ฅ It's no wonder this race is part of the UTMB World Series ๐. And, if you prefer running as a team, this race is also available in a relay format ๐ฏ, with a team of nine, how classy ๐.
Regarding the route, the starting signal will be given in Forcalquier, at 6 PM ๐, and on that evening, even before it begins, you'll already be in the mood! A crowd of supporters will be there to give you a great boost ๐. Headlamp on your head ๐ฆ, you'll embark on your first crazy night in the hills of Forcalquier ๐. You'll first head towards the hamlet of Ybourgues, and then proceed to the village of Limans.
After these first steps that will get you started ๐, you'll head to Ongles, and there, remember to turn your headlamp to full power because you'll pass through the remarkable ruins of Viรจres, a spectacle not to be missed! ๐ค After this visual feast, your first refreshment stop will await you. You can catch your breath and regain strength (which you'll need ๐ค). This well-deserved break will be brief, as your next step will be to pass through the villages of Lardiers. Beware, it's uphill! ๐ But after these challenging 50 km, a refreshment stop will welcome you with open arms. Enough to comfort you and give you courage for what's next ๐ช.
So what's next? It goes on (and on), heading towards the Lure station, marking the 70th km, which will be your first life base. A beautiful technical descent will lead you to the Vallon de Briau where you can catch your breath ๐ด. You'll need a lot of mental strength and courage to continue facing "The Summit of Man" โฐ. The 5 km left to reach the Lure station will seem much easier. Upon arrival, you can enjoy a warm break with a good meal. Enough to recharge your batteries! โ The trails of Contadour, with the majestic Mountain of Lure in the background, will bring you closer to the most iconic section of the course. Your calves will still take another hit with the numerous ascents, but we promise, it's worth it! Under the first rays of the sun, Lure's ridges will unfold before you step by step. Stop for a few minutes to admire this 360ยฐ view. A sunrise over the Lure mountain is not something everyone gets to experience. So, you'll need to savor this magical, timeless spectacle ๐.
You'll have tackled the hardest part! After this brief downtime, you'll head towards Jas des Bailles. You can pick up the pace and enjoy yourself on the technical descents. But in trail running, everything you descend, you must climb back up! So, prepare to climb to its 913 m altitude before descending towards Saint-Etienne-les-Orgues, a small village at the foot of Lure. At that point, you'll have already covered 110 km! ๐ฎ But no time to rest. You'll continue, this time in a more Provenรงal landscape ๐ and more regular. No more big climbs and big descents, you'll now run at a lower altitude. It will also be time to turn your headlamp back on! You'll discover splendid hamlets, including Sigonce, where you'll find a refreshment stop, before reaching the village of Fontienne where the last refreshment stop will be located.
You'll then be at the foot of the Truques climb, the last challenge of the course. You'll see Forcalquier, in the distance, waiting for you with open arms ๐. But to reach it, you'll need to cross the geological site of Mourres, with its stone mushrooms ๐, whose history began 25 million years ago. Final moments of the race: the finish line ๐. With countless memories, the celebration will continue in the THP village and in Forcalquier. It will be hard to come down from your little cloud after this magnificent 168 km adventure! ๐
The Adret de Lure is 122 km, 5,550 mD+ ๐ฅณ , we can assure you, your calves are going to burn! ๐ฅ It's no surprise that this race is part of the global UTMB circuit ๐.
Almost the entire route follows that of the "THP 160", especially up to the village of Fontienne. After that, we expect you to give everything you have left for the remaining 10 km towards Forcalquier! A rich adventure full of emotion will come to an end for you. Enjoy this moment with the crowd of supporters waiting for you! ๐
If the Ultra de Provence still scares you a bit, but you still want to participate in a long trail, then the "THP80" is for you ! ๐ With its 80 km and its 3,400 mD+ ๐ฐ, it is also part of the UTMB circuit and has nothing to be ashamed of compared to its big brother of 160 km ๐ฌ. Like its big brother, this race can be done in relay, in teams of 4 ๐ฏ. This year the route has changed to make way for a more technical course. As with the "THP160" and the "THP120" you will discover the Jabron Valley and all its surprises ๐.
Let's get serious, the race start ๐ will be given at Ongles, in the early morning ๐. You will set off towards Lardiers with a progressive ascent โ๏ธ that will get your legs moving right from the start. Admire the sunrise and gather your strength ๐ช because you will face more than 1,330 mD+ before reaching the next refreshment station ! ๐ You will discover the magnificent landscapes of the Montagne de Lure ๐๏ธ with nature that will reward your efforts. Here you are at the Lure Station โท๏ธ, where you will find a refreshment area and you can tell yourself that you have already covered more than 25 km ๐ซถ.
On the road again, because there is still a way to go! Head towards the Jabron State Forest ๐ฒ which is home to many species ๐ฆซ and we hope you'll be lucky enough to see some! After a long period in the silence and calm ๐งโโ๏ธ of nature, you will soon find some noise and life at the next refreshment stop at Jas des Bailles. It marks the passage at km 38, almost half of the course. After regaining your strength, you will tackle another large segment of the route โ๏ธ. More than 900 mD+ await you between the 40th and 45th km. It is the second toughest part of the course, after which you can feel that everything you cross will be less hard ๐ค. Until the 60th km, you will follow the Cruis Forest and the Lure State Forest, a whole host of incredible lush landscapes! All these panoramas will help you hang in there ๐.
Look up and you will see in the distance the second last refreshment point at Saint-Etienne-Les-Orgues, a small village at the foot of the Montagne de Lure. With a full stomach and a light heart, you'll start the final part of your race. The last refreshment will be at Fontienne, a typical village of the Alpes de Haute Provence crossed by the GR6 hiking trail ๐ฅพ and therefore accustomed to seeing athletes tread its lands. And there you go, it will almost be the end of the adventure of this Ultra de Provence... You will pass through the Truquรฉs, the Mourres then Forcalquier will welcome you with open arms ๐ , and you can cross that famous finish line to the cheers of the many spectators present.
The THP80 can be completed in relay of 4 ๐คช.
To you, seasoned runner, the THP65 and its 65 km await you! ๐ With 2,700 mD+, you'll need courage and strong legs to finish this trail, which is part of the UTMB circuit. The village of Lardiers will hint at what's to come, as it's from there that you'll take off ๐. Since the starting point is different from the other races, the THP has thought of everything. A shuttle will be provided to take you from Forcalquier to the starting point ๐.
This course will be an opportunity for you to experience a taste of everything the land of Giono has to offer ๐. Once you have crossed the arch at Lardier, you'll dive right into the heart of the matter. The Lure will be there, facing you, waiting patiently for you to challenge it โฐ. The wide trails among the pines will lead you to the Bergerie du Gros Chรชne ๐. You can take the time to admire this majestic tree ๐ณ, full of wisdom, which will transmit good vibes to help you continue your race. It is then through a beech grove that you'll walk. A bit of shade and coolness, who can refuse that! ๐ฅ As you exit this forest, the magical ridges of Lure will enchant you and guide you towards the Summit of Lure, nestled at 1,864 m altitude.
Even if it's not the season โท, you'll make a short visit to the ski resort of Lure, which has existed since 1937. There, you'll find a refreshment at the Sauvagine refuge, which is accessible by car (which means your loved ones can come to cheer you on ๐)! A very nice descent will await you afterward and lead you to the Chapel of Notre Dame de Lure โช๏ธ, bordered by bicentenary lime trees. Without much difficulty, you can maintain your pace until the town of Saint-Etienne-les-Orgues. By then, you will have covered nearly 30 km!
For your final strides, head towards Forcalquier. On your way, you'll take a gentle climb towards Fontienne (for a final refreshment), along the Laye stream. The last challenge of the course is the Truques ascent, with, in the distance, the Lure watching you intently ๐. Finally, it is Forcalquier that will welcome you with open arms to conclude this beautiful adventure. The loop will be completed, yet the party will continue in the THP village ๐.
If you love the marathon but are tired of asphalt and flat surfaces ๐ฃ๏ธ we have an excellent solution for you: the "THP 50"! You'll embark on 50 km and 1,700 mD+ through the mountains of Haute Provence ๐. This distance is a good compromise for those who haven't yet taken the plunge into very long distances. The route is described as less marked and more accessible ๐ซถ, plus, it passes through new towns!
You will start the race from the town of Montlaux ๐๏ธ. This town is crossed by the Lauzon ๐ง, a river that crosses the department. During the first 15 km to Ganagobie, you will traverse ever more lush nature ๐, in the tranquility of the forest ๐ฒ and nature where we hope the sun โ๏ธ will bring you some joy. Before reaching your first hydration stop ๐ฅค, you'll pass near the Abbaye de Ganagobie โช. It's one of the main tourist attractions of this small village, enchanting its visitors with its beautiful and colorful medieval mosaics ๐จ. We hope you haven't already seen too many colors ๐ during this first part of the race, but if you have, you've arrived at your first refreshment stop in the Ganagobie parking lot. You've already run over 15 km with 552 mD+.
Off to the next stretch, which will spin your head ๐ฅต with lots of little twists right from the start, you'll need to trust your footing ๐ฆต until the 20th km, at the level of the Bois de Lurs. Once again, your eyes will feast upon the view, and you'll see magnificent olive groves ๐ซ that characterize the small Provence villages. Lurs, located in the valley of the Durance will be your second refreshment point ๐ฅฃ. Look behind you, you've completed half the course! For this second phase, a quick pass over the Lauzon and the Monessargues Gorge. Monessargues is also known for its hydraulic oil mill ๐งช. Finally, you'll lay your eyes on your last refreshment point at Pierrerue at the 29th km.
Last straight line on the Fontienne Road, with your eyes set on...Fontienne at km 39 ๐. Your final kilometers will call for a bit more strength ๐ช and courage, but each step brings you closer to Forcalquier ๐ฅฐ where many people await you in a fantastic atmosphere ๐บ.
Starting from Limans, this more accessible route will let you discover the surrounding areas of the THP. In the first 10 kilometers, you venture into nature to reach Ongles. After a slightly challenging climb (around 300 mD+ ๐ฅต), you reach Saint-รtienne-les-Orgues at km 19. The route then heads towards Fontienne at km 29 where a descent awaits you. But no uphill without downhill! One last ascent, a descent, and you will have arrived at Forcalquier. Well done, champion ๐ช.
28 km and 1,120 mD+. That's what awaits you during the event ๐.
Starting in the heart of Forcalquier, you will enjoy a magnificent view of the old town and the citadel. In short, the Provencal charm that will warm your heart right from the first steps! ๐โโ๏ธ To get your legs going, a beautiful and long descent will lead you to the foot of the first challenge of the course: a 3 km climb with 400 mD+ ๐ฐ. You will then reach Les Arnaud for your first refreshment.
By that time, you will have already covered 8.5 km. Practically halfway ๐ช! A climb is essential to Clot de Melly, which peaks at 900 m altitude. It will not be the time to give up! A few final efforts on the paths will take you straight to the village of Fontienne. You will find your second and last refreshment there. Once you catch your breath, it's time for the Truques climb waiting to be scaled. This section is common to all THP events! ๐ฅ Last moments of the race. You will have the chance to pass by the geological site of Mourres, with its stone mushrooms ๐. Finally, you'll cross the finish line in Forcalquier. The citadel seen in the morning will offer itself to you with new colors ๐.
Small but cute, the 22 km of the Mourres will let you discover Forcalquier and its surroundings in the most beautiful way ๐. 800 mD+... You will need to be well prepared nonetheless! ๐ช
From the starting arch ๐, you will set off for more than 3.5 km of ascent ๐. You will pass near the Saint Marc chapel โช๏ธ, then you will follow a beautiful olive grove, before finding yourself in a more mineral landscape, typical of the Mourres. Once the climb is over, you will be delighted to see a beautiful technical descent that will lead you straight to a reservoir with surprisingly blue water ๐ฆ. By then, you will have covered 4 km of the race! You will continue on rocky trails for more than 5 km, alternating climbs, false flats, descents, and softer sections. At times, you will be able to lengthen your stride and have maximum fun! Near Fontienne, you will find a refreshment station ๐ฅค. This final section is common to all events, so you can enjoy a superb atmosphere and invigorating cheers on the trails ๐.
After regaining your strength, you will have a nice section left to conquer: the Truques ascent, with the Lure mountain โฐ in front, offering a magnificent view in the late afternoon light ๐. Then head towards the geological site of the Mourres with its stone mushrooms, dating back several million years ๐ฎ. The final strides will bring you back to Forcalquier. After crossing the finish line, you will discover a city in celebration! The adventure will continue with music at the THP village ๐.
The "Forcalquier Challenge" is an ideal race for those who have just started trail running! ๐ It is a 10 km course with a 330 m elevation gain ๐ฃ. After warming up to the rhythm of the music, you'll be ready to tackle the challenge! ๐
The start line is set in the heart of Forcalquier ๐. You'll set off on a wide path that becomes increasingly narrow and steep with every stride. Transitioning from an olive grove to a more rocky landscape, these changes of scenery will amaze you! ๐ After about 2.5 km uphill, you'll see below a shimmering blue water basin ๐ฆ. That's your next destination! Once you reach this dam, you'll have covered 3 km. What follows is a section of approximately 1.5 km with a series of gentle slopes and short climbs, leading you finally to the summit of the Mourres โฐ. Your refreshment point will be around this area!
Yes, it's already time to head back to Forcalquier! A pleasant and smooth descent between the stone mushrooms of the geological site of the Mourres will be the highlight of this end of the course ๐.
