Ultra-trail goes big, from the sea to the peaks

Six departments, from the Big Blue to peaks at 3,000 m. Here, ultra is run facing Ventoux, in Mercantour, or above the Calanques—with the mistral thrown in. Welcome to the kingdom of the long haul 🏔️.

From the Mediterranean shoreline to peaks rising above three thousand metres, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur packs into a single region everything a long-distance runner can hope for. Six departments make up this vast puzzle, from the sun-drenched Bouches-du-Rhône to the wine-growing Vaucluse, via the wooded Var, the rugged Alpes-Maritimes, the lavender-scented Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, and the lofty Hautes-Alpes. Marseille sets the Phocaean city facing the open sea 🌊. Nice stretches its bay under the light, Toulon guards its harbour, Aix-en-Provence lines up its fountains, Avignon watches over its Palace of the Popes. Further north, Gap opens the gateway to the high country, where your legs really start to speak ⛰️.

The playground upends привычки. Mont Ventoux, the Giant of Provence, raises its white skull above the vineyards of the Comtat. Mercantour National Park stacks sharp ridgelines and hanging valleys all the way to the transalpine border. To the north, Écrins National Park keeps the snows of the Hautes-Alpes, a kingdom for tireless climbers. The turquoise canyon of the Verdon Gorge cuts into the limestone between Var and Haute-Provence. Along the coast, the Calanques massif plunges its white cliffs into a glassy sea, while the Sainte-Victoire mountain watches over the Aix countryside. Between crackling garrigue and green alpine pastures, the palette gives no one a rest 🦎.

The weather here readily plays the role of the final judge. The southern sun heats up the trails as early as spring, forcing runners into a razor-precise hydration strategy 🥵. The mistral sweeps across Ventoux and the ridgelines without warning, able to turn a calm outing into an arm-wrestle. In the high country, snow lingers on north-facing slopes and cools high-altitude nights long after cherry season. Endurance runners therefore read the calendar like a treasure map: April for the Giant’s slopes, summer for the high passes, October for Azuréen mildness ☀️. Each month cracks open a different window under the stars 🌌.

Time for the big rendezvous. The Grand Raid Ventoux by UTMB, starting from Malaucène, takes runners up to the Giant’s bare summit over a format close to one hundred and twenty-five kilometres—already a must on the global circuit. The Nice Côte d'Azur by UTMB, launched in early October from the heights of Mercantour, unfurls a long ribbon between Alpine ridges and the Bay of Angels. The Trail de Haute-Provence, in Forcalquier, completes the trio with its one-hundred-and-sixty-five-kilometre ultra in semi self-sufficiency. Browse the ultra-trail calendar to spot every race in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, from the cliffs of the Verdon to the peaks of Dévoluy. Ultra-trail in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur has forged its own figures: Guillaume Grima, a child of Barcelonnette, carried the endurance of these southern mountains all the way to the six hundred icy kilometres of Canada’s Far North. These nature trail-labelled routes serve as a springboard for the most ambitious 🏁.

The big thrill doesn’t stop at regional borders. The points picked up on these ultras feed the famous global index, opening the road to the finals of the UTMB Mont-Blanc in Chamonix, the grail for many runners. To the east, the Italian Alps of the Aosta Valley open their arms to cross-border calves in search of legendary loops 🇮🇹. Once back, the terroir takes over: olive oil, tapenade, pistou, calissons from Aix restore drained bodies 🫒. Culture infuses everywhere, from the Garlaban hills dear to Marcel Pagnol to the ochre alleyways of hilltop villages. Whether you’re a novice ready to sign up for your first big format or a seasoned ultra runner chasing sleepless nights, choose your terrain to suit your desires and then set off: the region keeps a trail cut for every pair of legs 🏆.
