Six departments, from the Calanques to the Mercantour and from Ventoux to the Verdon. Here, the coastline meets high mountains. Sunshine, mistral winds and endless trails are waiting for you, from the seaside to the peaks of the Southern Alps.

Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur is quickly summed up as sunshine and cicadas, but it has enough to keep your legs busy for years 🌞. Marseille kicks things off with your feet in the water, Nice stretches its bay out to the open sea, Toulon keeps watch over its harbour. Further inland, Aix-en-Provence cultivates its stone-built charm while Avignon keeps an eye on the Rhône. On one side the Mediterranean, on the other the Alps: few regions can pull off such a split. Looking for a race in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur? Welcome to the paradise of nature runners.

The playground is well worth a look. Above Cassis, in the Bouches-du-Rhône, the Calanques massif drops its white cliffs into turquoise water 🌊. Head to the Verdon, whose canyon—one of the largest on the continent—delights thrill-seekers. Further north, in the Alpes-Maritimes, the Mercantour stacks its peaks up to the Italian border, while the Écrins keep their glaciers way up high, on the Hautes-Alpes side ⛰. In the Vaucluse, Mont Ventoux watches over the plain with its bare skull, a white beacon visible for miles. Lower down, the Luberon swaps pine forests for lavender fields 🪻. To the west, the Camargue unfurls its wild stretches, a total contrast to the peaks.

As for the sky, Provence doesn’t cheat. The sun is the headliner for much of the year—plenty to run when the rest of the country is shivering ❄️. The mistral sweeps down the Rhône valley, just to cool your legs on furnace-hot days. In summer, it’s better to aim for the freshness of the Southern Alps, while the coastline of the Var stops simmering. In spring and autumn, the light softens and the trails become perfect for climbing without roasting. The mountains take over as soon as you gain a little altitude.

Now for the races, because the trail calendar overflows more than a market on a Sunday morning 🧺. The Grand Raid Ventoux sends you to tame the Giant of Provence, an absolute monument of the genre. In Forcalquier, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, the Trail de Haute Provence climbs the Montagne de Lure, from family-friendly formats to a big 160 km ultra 🥾. The Serre Che Trail Salomon turns you loose in the Cerces massif. Around La Grave, the Trail de la Meije treats you to lofty trails that are worth the trip. The area also knows how to produce stars: Mathieu Blanchard, a kid from Cavaillon, went toe-to-toe with Kilian Jornet all the way at UTMB 2022 before going on to scoop up the Diagonale des Fous 😮. Enough to get you fired up for your next trail in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur.

Once you’ve crossed the finish line, the region is there to be savoured. The Palais des Papes watches over Avignon, the ancient theatre of Orange still echoes with Rome, the hilltop villages of Gordes or Roussillon pose for the postcard 😍. At the table, bouillabaisse facing the Old Port gets the engine going again, and Niçoise socca does the rest. It’s all best enjoyed in the shade of a plane tree, a glass of chilled rosé in hand (in moderation, right), while a game of pétanque drags on 🍷. This Provence, Jean Giono, the child of Manosque, was already telling its story in his novels, just a stone’s throw from the Lure trails. From coastal routes to high mountains, all that’s left is to pick your side depending on your level. First beginner loop or summit-hungry ultra, head down to the department that’s catching your eye and find the race made for you 🎉.
