Ahhhhh Mallorca … maybe you pictured yourself sipping sangria in the Balearic Islands, with the sun and fine-sand beaches as your only company? 🍹 You’re not entirely wrong, but you’ll have to wait a bit before you kick back. Once your bags are down at Aeropuerto de Palma de Mallorca, keep the swim in the back of your mind and pull out your trail shoes. You’ll need them first—and fast! 😳 If you’re here, it’s first and foremost for Mallorca by UTMB®! And yes, you heard right: the trail is organized by the world-famous UTMB franchise, known among other things for its demonic race: UTMB®. Another crazy event you may have already had a taste of if you’ve previously visited the famous fanzone in Vallorcine 📣. But here, it’s nothing like the nighttime and Dantesque conditions of the Alps. You’re right in the middle of the Mediterranean, east of Spain, in a place you could easily call "paradise" 🪼. But while the island is famous for its fine sand and turquoise water, its hinterland also hides its own limestone demon: the Serra de Tramuntana, a mountain range listed by UNESCO that will make your joints squeal 🦵. The original route takes the form of an authentic, technical, ultra-rocky ultra-trail, but more accessible races have also been created so that as many participants as possible can feel the fervor (and the pain 😬) of such a mythical circuit 🇪🇸.
The organization left you no way out. Whether you’re a road marathon fan looking for wide-open spaces or a pure-bred mountain runner, they’ve cut the cake into four so everyone can bite into their share 🍰. Sprinters will line up for the trail race format "Camins de s'Arxiduc" (26 km) in Valldemossa. And if you’re wondering why we insist on combining the words "sprint" and "26 km", it’s because you haven’t seen the other distances yet 👹. For the second course, we step it up again with a long trail format of 50 km (56 km to be precise), nicknamed "Els Tres Mils". You may be starting to understand what you’re getting into: a gathering of trail die-hards and unforgettable landscapes 🌄. Fans of playful and original formats will also find what they’re looking for with the "Camins de Pedra en Sec", a race 102 km long 🤯. The originality comes from finishing by headlamp light after 15 to 20 hours of effort 🔦. You won’t soon forget the cheers, the atmosphere, and the procession of thousands of headlamps in the heart of the mountains. As for the playful part, we’ll admit that depends on the person… you can always count rocks or kilometers if you get bored? 😂 Well, if you’re a passionate runner you may have noticed we still hadn’t talked about the "Serra de Tramuntana"... Indeed, it’s the flagship race of the event—the one that will leave you with the most memories, and the most aches 😪. We’re talking, after all, about 138 km and 5,350 mD+, all in under 30 hours and 30 minutes 😵. Basically, you’re heading out for a big day’s work, so bring something for a (or two) coffee breaks—it definitely won’t be too much. By the way, all the courses are eligible for the UTMB Index and can earn you Rolling Stones Running Stones if you make it to the end, so give it everything you’ve got. Rocks have to be earned! 🪨
If you’re wondering about the course profile, it’s simple: you can forget everything you’ve seen so far. Locals don’t know what flat means ❌. The terrain is a succession of surges, ridges, and "dry-stone" paths that demand maximum focus to avoid giving your shoes a big hug 💥. But the effort is worth it, because every summit offers you a panorama that drops straight into the blue of the Mediterranean Sea. This is clearly the kind of event that will remind you why you were so determined to put yourself through those horrible Sunday-morning interval sessions: to conquer these mountains and make the most of every moment 😍.
Alright, you know everything about the race? Then let’s move on to the best part what comes next! The post-race is a tourist paradise less than an hour’s drive from the start 🚗. Forget energy gels and electrolytes in favor of a giant paella, or local tapas 🥘. Go for a stroll in Palma de Mallorca to admire its Gothic cathedral La Seu, or let your battered calves tan on the beaches of Port de Sóller. Architecture-wise, you can also take a detour to the Royal Palace of La Almudaina. After 138 km of racing across the land, you’re kind of the king of the island after all 👑. Whether you come solo to chase a time or with family for a sporty vacation, you have all the cards in hand. So—ready to set off on an adventure? 🌟
