Do you know the Ekiden? This sporting practice, born in the Land of the Rising Sun 🇯🇵 in 1917, consists of running as a relay in successive segments organized as follows: 5 km, 10 km, 5 km, 10 km, 5 km and, to finish, 7.195 km. Traditionally, in Japan, Ekiden runners pass on a baton called a Tasuki, which is a fabric sash 🧣. For your information, the first event of this relay race lasted three days, with a 508-kilometer route between Kyoto ⛩️ and Tokyo 🗼, revisiting a tradition of carrying mail along the Tōkaidō road. Today, we’re staying closer to home. We’re taking you to the Ekiden de Toulouse where, rest assured, the distance will be much more classic and standardized 😉.
If you’ve never taken part, the Ekiden is a unique and fun way to take on the marathon by relaying with your friends or family, with a team of 6 people. Women, men, young people: everyone gets a chance to take part 👏. Teams can be mixed. A great moment of sharing ahead, right? 🤗 The Ekiden de Toulouse is organized by Triathlon Toulouse Métropole and the Club Athlétique Balmanais 🤝. You’ll run through iconic places in Toulouse such as L’Envol des Pionniers and the Halle de la Machine, known for its show machines 😍. And then, tearing through the streets of the Pink City 💓, on the legendary Piste des Géants 😎—there are worse plans, right? Toulouse, capital of French rugby and also of the Occitanie region, is indeed recognized as one of the most pleasant cities in France. No doubt you’ll enjoy it during this Ekiden!
Outside your race, you’ll find happiness within the city walls or in the majestic lands around it 🥰. If you’re passionate about aerospace, the Cité de l’Espace is a must 🚀. The Aeroscopia Museum will also delight young and old alike. If you want to enjoy something more nature-oriented, the banks of the Garonne aren’t a bad choice... 🌊 Painting 🎨 and sculpture lovers should head to the Musée des Augustins, a former convent that changed its purpose in 1795. And a terrace on Place du Capitole is worth earning too... ☕️ In short, you’ll have a hard time leaving this major French city that has managed to remain human-sized.
You can also decide to cover a few kilometers along the Canal du Midi, that famous waterway that runs from Toulouse to the Mediterranean 🏝️. Time seems to stand still along the water 💧. The Haute-Garonne department has a very bucolic side, and many towns are waiting to be discovered by travelers. Aurignac, Muret, Blagnac, Colomiers—the list is long... 😏
Whatever you choose, you’ll be happy! 😀
A word from the organizer:
"The result of a great collaboration between Triathlon Toulouse Métropole and CA Balma! The meeting between the two clubs dates back to 2014, when their presidents (Stéphane and Michel) connected to share their ideas and their common vision of sport. Their clubs, with similar values, quickly found common ground around trust, friendliness, and the dynamism of their teams. Over the years, this collaboration has grown stronger through competitions and a constant desire to help sport grow across the Toulouse metropolitan area. In 2025, this great understanding becomes reality with the organization of a joint event at the Ekiden de Toulouse."
The starting signal rings out on the Piste des Géants, in the Montaudran district, between Envol des Pionniers and the Halle de la Machine 🏁. Here, the memory of aviation pioneers in Toulouse remains very much alive, and your team of 6 takes flight in turn ✈️. The marathon is divided into six segments, in keeping with the Ekiden tradition: 5 km, 10 km, 5 km, 10 km, 5 km, then 7.195 km to complete the 42.195 km. Each runner waits their turn, then passes the baton to their teammate in the designated relay zone 🔁. The route stays in the Montaudran area, without leaving the site’s atmosphere.
