Nothing but green, in the middle of Italy

The only region in Italy with no sea and no border, tucked away right in the center. Olive-covered hills, hilltop villages, Assisi and Saint Francis, a giant waterfall, and black truffles to spare 🌿

Nicknamed the green heart of Italy, the title is well deserved: Umbria is the only region in the country with neither a coastline nor a border with a foreign country, sitting right in the center like a jewel box of hills. Perugia, the capital, overlooks the valley from atop its ramparts, between its university for foreigners, its jazz festival, and its chocolate factory that created the famous Baci 🍫. Terni keeps watch in the south, more industrious, while Assisi draws pilgrims from all over the world in the footsteps of Saint Francis, patron saint of Italy. Nearby, Spoleto, Orvieto perched on its tuff rock, medieval Gubbio, and Todi round out a collection of stage-set towns 🇮🇹.

The terrain is made up of gentle hills and ridges. The Apennines cross the east of the region, with the Sibillini range shared with the Marche and the Castelluccio plateau, famous for its spring lentil bloom 🌼. At the heart, the Umbrian valley rolls out its silvery olive groves and Sagrantino vineyards, in a soft light that has inspired generations of painters. To the west, Lake Trasimeno, Italy’s fourth-largest, spreads its calm waters where Hannibal crushed the Roman legions in 217 BCE. And near Terni, the Marmore Falls plunge more than one hundred and sixty meters, an artificial drop carved by the Romans and one of the highest in Europe 💦.

The temperate continental climate brings hot summers and cool winters, sometimes snowy at higher elevations. Spring and autumn remain the prime seasons, when the hills turn green and then golden and truffles perfume the markets 🍂. The region is pleasant to run in for much of the year in the valleys, while the Sibillini trails await the fair season. Here, no crowds or packed seaside resorts: just paths among olive trees, abbeys, and villages where silence still has its place.

The race calendar in Umbria blends spirituality, gastronomy, and nature. The San Francesco Marathon sets off from Assisi in November in the saint’s footsteps, against a backdrop of hills and monasteries 🥾. The St. Valentine Marathon takes place in Terni in February, a city that claims the patron saint of lovers and passes near the Marmore Falls. The Perugia Jazz Half Marathon livens up the capital in July to the festival’s beat, the Foligno Half Marathon takes over in October, and the Lake Trasimeno UltraMarathon circles it in spring over nearly sixty kilometers. On the trails, the Bettona Crossing explores the hills in September, while Frantoi Aperti combine running with gastronomy when the olive mills open their doors. Obstacle fans have Spartan Gubbio in November, and triathletes the Piediluco Triathlon on its lake 🏊. Craving a change of scenery? The Marche extend the Apennines to the east, Tuscany borders the region to the northwest, and Lazio heads down toward Rome to the south.

After a race in Umbria, the table plays the local, earthy card. Norcia’s black truffle perfumes pasta all year long, and it’s from this same town that the word norcineria comes, the art of preparing pork 🐖. Tiny, fragrant Castelluccio lentils go with sausages, and olive oil flows over toasted bruschetta. A glass of Sagrantino di Montefalco, that tannic, powerful red, or white Orvieto rounds off the meal (Alcohol abuse is dangerous for your health; consume in moderation). In terms of heritage, Umbria has produced two figures who reach far beyond its borders: Saint Francis of Assisi, patron saint of Italy and of ecology, and Saint Benedict, born in Norcia, founder of Western monasticism ⛪. The painter Perugino, Raphael’s mentor, immortalized these landscapes, and the long tradition of pilgrims on the Via di Francesco makes walkers and runners the natural heirs to these paths. So, a marathon to Assisi or a lap of Lake Trasimeno? Compare the local marathons and trails—the green heart of Italy is waiting for you 👟.
