Vesuvius, the sea, real pizza

Naples overflowing with life, Vesuvius smoking in the distance, the Amalfi Coast clinging to the cliffside, and Pompeii. You run facing the bay—and you eat like nowhere else 🌋

Campania is a real postcard: a perfect bay, a volcano in the background, and a city overflowing with life all around. Naples is its beating heart—chaotic and magnificent—capital of an ancient kingdom and the homeland of pizza, which you truly won’t eat anywhere better than here 🇮🇹. Just next door, Vesuvius still stands watch, the volcano that buried Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79 and that you can now climb all the way up to the crater. Farther south, Salerno opens the gateway to the Amalfi Coast, while Caserta hides its immense royal palace, Italy’s answer to Versailles.

The terrain plays on every register, from flat urban stretches to coastal vertigo. The Bay of Naples lines up its tightly packed towns between sea and hills, dominated by the volcano’s conical silhouette 🌋. To the east, the Campanian Apennines rise into green, wild reliefs that few runners explore. But the real star is the Amalfi Coast: from Sorrento to Positano and then Amalfi, the road clings to the cliff above a turquoise sea, in a succession of bends and terraced lemon groves. Farther south still, Cilento unfolds wild beaches and the Greek temples of Paestum, among the best preserved in the world.

The Mediterranean climate sets the pace. The coast and Naples can be run for much of the year, with mild winters and hot summers tempered by the sea breeze. Spring and autumn remain the prime windows, when the light turns soft over the gulf and the summer crowds leave the Amalfi Coast 🍋. The inland highlands and the slopes of Vesuvius are at their best outside of heatwaves, when the dark, light volcanic soil makes every stride feel a little special.

The race calendar in Campania revolves around two stars: the volcano and the bay. The Maratona di Napoli runs through the city in October, between the seafront, the castle and the UNESCO-listed historic center, and its Half Marathon returns in February with a world label. The Vesuvius Ultra Marathon climbs straight up the volcano from Ottaviano in September, up to sixty-five kilometers on black earth—the only true trail in the region at this level 🥾. The Sorrento Positano connects two gems of the Amalfi Coast in December, on one of Italy’s most spectacular routes, and the StraSalerno livens up Salerno’s seafront in October. On the triathlon side, the Triathlon Festival di Ispani and the Tri-Week Villamare set up their transitions on the Cilento coast 🏊. Craving something else? Lazio borders the region to the north toward Rome, and Basilicata takes over to the east toward Matera.

After a race in Campania, the table is popular art at its finest. Pizza was born in Naples, and the Margherita even has an official story there, created for a queen 🍕. Buffalo mozzarella bursts with freshness, San Marzano tomatoes grow at the foot of Vesuvius, and on the sweet side, the crispy sfogliatella and the soaked babà vie for the spotlight. A glass of Taurasi, that powerful red from the hinterland, or a Sorrento limoncello rounds out the meal (Alcohol abuse is dangerous for your health; consume in moderation). When it comes to idols, Naples devotes an eternal cult to Diego Maradona, whose face still covers the city’s walls, the absolute symbol of calcio ⚽. The region also gave the actress Sophia Loren, who grew up in Pozzuoli, the great Neapolitan actor Totò, and the tenor Enrico Caruso, a pure product of the city 🎭. So, a marathon through the streets of Naples or an ultra on Vesuvius? Compare the local marathons and road races—the gulf is waiting for you 👟.
