Run, drink, eat, run, drink, eat… The International Beaujolais Marathon is the race of gastronomic delight and pushing your limits! 😮💨
Villefranche-sur-Saône, in the Rhône, is home to a completely crazy event! 🤯 In November, this road race will make you forget the cold for a memorable moment, in a crazy atmosphere! 🥳 It’s in the rolling hills among the Beaujolais crus, between roads, vineyard paths 🍇 and castles, that the International Beaujolais Marathon is laid out.
Before getting to the heart of the matter, a little step back is needed to understand the origins of this event... It can easily be considered the little brother of the Médoc Marathon 💊. It’s a slightly crazy project launched by a group of three friends, who have just returned from the Big Apple 🍏 after running the New York City Marathon 🗽. It’s the end of 1995, and the idea of recreating a festive, friendly marathon "made in Beaujolais", like the one they’ve just experienced, starts to take shape 💭. The rest, we know: an event that attracts more participants every year, reaching over 30,000 participants! 😱 And with so many people expected, there will be quite a crowd! Set on the international stage 🌍, the International Beaujolais Marathon (yes, it was in the name 🤪) welcomes international runners with open arms and guarantees immersion in the local terroir and traditions! 🍇 A true running festival that shines a spotlight on Beaujolais heritage with unique wine tastings 🍷.
There’s so much to say about this great celebration of sport—let’s focus on the race first! On the program, 9 totally out-of-this-world routes laid out between Patrick Fleurie and Villefranche-sur-Saône! You can choose between: the Beaujolais Marathon, the Beaujolais Half Marathon, the "13 km of the Rhône", and the "Family Marathon" of 2.5 km (or 5 km) for kids (but also the big kids 😝). And that’s just for Saturday! 🗓️ Because yes, the fun continues on Sunday with the trails of 43, 24 or 15 km! If you didn’t come here to run and you’ve got a big heart, there’s the "Charity Hike" of 12 or 6 km 🎗️.
To be perfectly honest, you’ll do it in costume (well yeah, it’s more fun 🤓), on a somewhat hilly route through the vineyards, stopping by to visit a few local producers! 👨🌾 You’ll have the chance to come across, if your eyes aren’t too crossed 🥴, the route of several castles (Corcelles, Pizay, Longsard in particular) 🏰. You’ll pass through many local towns (Corcelles-en-Beaujolais, Saint-Lager, Denicé, Gleizé) as well as larger towns (Belleville-sur-Saône, Charentay). The welcome is so extraordinary that physiotherapists and osteopaths will be available after your race to get you back on your feet so you can enjoy the rest 💆.
Because yes, this friendly event has its share of surprises in store! Here, the atmosphere is as festive as can be! The marathon village opens as early as Friday at midday ☀️. On the menu 🍴: the traditional "Magic Pasta party" 🍝 on Friday, the wild "Marathon Night" on Saturday and the "Wine tourism lunch" in Romanèche-Thorins as well as the "Trails and Hike lunch" in Gleizé on Sunday. Is that all? No, of course not! The aid stations are 5-star quality, with about fifteen tastings (to be enjoyed in moderation) 🍷. And by the way, you’re not going to fool us! Costumes aren’t just for the race—we want to see you wearing them throughout the whole festivities 🦸. Almost all participants play along; you’ll see, it’s the ultimate event in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes! Every year, you’ll witness a gigantic, ultra-friendly family gathering. The many activities and the powerful support from spectators will push you all the way to the finish line 🏁. To enjoy the region, many holiday cottages and hotels are available nearby and you’ll see, it’s a hiking paradise! 👟 And if you’re looking to discover even more local specialties, try a good Beaujolais sausage or a traditional Juliénas coq au vin. It’s going to be great! 😋
An event that’s always more magic 🪄, always more festive 🥳, eco-responsible and supportive, with the bonus of gastronomy 🍽️, before, during and after the race: this International Beaujolais Marathon is no small beer! 🍻
Ladies and gentlemen, attention please, it’s about to begin! Laces tied, watch started, eyes and ears wide open: all set—you’ve got everything you need to experience a marathon of madness, packed with music, tastings, and (a little bit, still) running 🤪.
Starting from Fleurie, your goal will be to reach Villefranche-sur-Saône by tackling the 42 km between them. To do that, you’ll be well supported by plenty of wine tastings (to be enjoyed in moderation, always 😌), aid stations, and the many music groups along the route! In fact, after barely 3 km of running, you’ll already be able to enjoy a glass of Beaujolais 🍷 in the town of Lancié, to kick off your race properly 😆.
The rest of your route will be dotted with castles, and more castles: Château de Corcelles (km 4.5), Château de Pizay (km 10), Château de la Terrière (km 15), Château de Ravatys (km 17), Château de la Brasse (km 20), and finally the Château du Petit et du Grand Talancé (km 35) will set the pace for your strides and offer a magical setting 🏰. What’s more, at each of these castles, you can enjoy a wine tasting, with a band to go with it 🎶.
After this string of castles and the wild tunes, you’ll gradually approach the end of your race. You’ll pass through the town of Gleizé, and at last, Villefranche-sur-Saône will open its doors to you, along with Avenue Joseph Balloffer. What’s so special about it? It will simply bring your route to a beautiful finish with around ten wine tasting points! 😮 After passing along the famous Rue Nationale (Rue Nat' for those in the know), you’ll finally head for the finish line! 🏁
Off we go for a loop through the 🍷 crus of Beaujolais, starting from Villefranche-sur-Saône !
After a few strides with the Caladois, head to Gleizé. Then you’ll pass by the Domaine de la Ruisselière and the commune of Lacenas. In the meantime, you’ll have several chances to taste Beaujolais, just to get your energy back! 🍷 You’ll reach Denicé at km 8, then you’ll see several castles one after another from the 13th km: Château Le Colombier, Château du Petit Talancé and the Grand Talancé. Then, set your sights on Villefranche-sur-Saône, with its Avenue des Crus where about ten tastings await you, its Rue Nat’, and finally the finish line! 🏁
The most accessible route of the International Beaujolais Marathon, the "13 km of the Rhône" is a festive and fun race, stormed every year!
In the form of a loop starting from Villefranche-sur-Saône, these 13 km will first take you through Gleizé, a small neighboring commune. Shortly after mid-race, you’ll be able to admire the Château de la Venerie. Then you’ll keep striding toward your starting point 📍.
With 2 aid stations and 8 wine tastings planned along the route, it’s safe to say you’ll regain strength even before you’ve lost it! 😅
The Marathon du Beaujolais brings together little ones and grown-ups so that this event is truly a big sports celebration! 🎉
On the program for the Family Marathon, a 2.5 km or 5 km loop within Villefranche-sur-Saône, to be completed once or twice depending on your mood 😋.
This race is open to all children, but those under 12 must be accompanied by an adult 👨👩👧👦.
For the second year in a row, the Marathon du Beaujolais is organizing a walk solidarity walk of 7.5 km, in partnership with the association "Courir POUR ELLES".
The "Rando POUR ELLES" is an accessible walk with no difficulty that takes place on a loop route on the road. It’s an opportunity to take part in a big sports celebration while contributing to a good cause: raising funds to support the fight against female cancers. €10 will be donated to this cause for each registration.
