Gravelmaaaaan 🎶
No official connection with Rocket Man by Elton John… but fair warning: the GravelMan Series is just as addictive as its chorus 🕺. In May, when the days get longer and your legs are itching with impatience, head to the Monts du Lyonnais for a crazy cycling adventure 🤪. You’ll set off into the Beaujolais, this rolling playground north of Lyon, where the vineyards, ridgelines and tracks will serve you a sublime setting 😍. So hop on your gravel bike or your road bike 🚴, tighten your helmet and take a deep breath: 60, 120, 200, 350 or 500 km await you. Whatever your level, if you love camaraderie, pushing yourself, and adventure, GravelMan Lyon is made for you 🫵.
This meetup is part of the famous GravelMan Series, those cycling adventures found across France 🇫🇷 and around the world 🌍: Marrakech, Paris, Bordeaux, Salagou, St-Malo, Anjou… The organizers have come up with ten formats tailored to every profile 💪. The beginner who wants to get a taste of gravel without sacrificing a kneecap will find what they’re looking for, just like the endurance addict ready to string together 500 clicks and 5,000 m of elevation gain (yes yes, you read that right 🥵). The 350 km with 3,500 m of elevation gain aims to be accessible but demanding 🫡. For a tough but reasonable challenge, the 200 km and its 3,000 m of elevation gain will be perfect 🤩. The last two formats are a 120 km and a 60 km, letting you get into the game without leaving an organ behind 🫁. As always, each format comes in a Gravel version (60% trails, 40% road) or Road (almost 100% tarmac). It’s then up to you to choose! ↔️ We hope you’ve got an adventurer’s soul, because this race requires you to be prepared for any eventuality 🫣. Aid stations are several hours apart, so you must know how to handle on your own a puncture, a nutrition issue, or a chain that slips. After completing a GravelMan, cycling will hold no more secrets for you—we guarantee it 🤫.
And once the finish line is behind you, what next? Well, enjoy Lyon, obviously. The gastronomic capital doesn’t just delight your taste buds 😋: it also unfolds a historical and cultural heritage that’s clearly worth the detour 👀. Start by strolling through Vieux Lyon, and get deliberately lost in the traboules, those secret passageways once used by the Canuts, the famous Lyon silk weavers 🪡. If your legs protest at the idea of walking any further ❌, go for a little cultural break: Musée des Confluences, Musée Gadagne, Musée de la Miniature et du Cinéma… You’ve got plenty to do! 🎬
And because you never leave Lyon on an empty stomach, treat yourself to a good old mâchon. Originally, this hearty meal was devoured at dawn by the Canuts after a night of work… today, it’s the perfect reward after an event that’s turned your legs and your brain inside out 🥴.
So, ready to devour… the heights of Lyon? 🤫
The Grand Route that goes from Lyon to Lyon, with around 350 km and 5,088 mD+ 🏔️. The route sets off from Lyon and quickly dives toward the southwest ⬇️.
You pass through the towns of Rive-de-Gier and Saint-Chamond before entering the heart of the Pilat Regional Natural Park 🌲. After climbing the peaks of the Pilat, you descend south toward Annonay, then you turn west to reach Monistrol-sur-Loire. The climb back up follows the western flank, passing through Saint-Just-Saint-Rambert and skirting the foothills of the Monts du Forez toward Montbrison 🏰.
The final section brings you back toward north of Lyon, crossing more rolling plains and valleys before looping to finish your journey in the City of the Gauls 🦁.
This race is the queen of the event: with its 313.3 km, this route forms a huge loop starting and finishing near Lyon 📍. The course takes you south toward Saint-Étienne, before plunging into the terrain of the Pilat Regional Natural Park. You'll pass key points such as Rive-de-Gier, Saint-Chamond, and you'll skirt Monistrol-sur-Loire at the southernmost point ⬇️.
The return is via the west, through the Monts du Lyonnais, passing near Montbrison and Saint-Just-Saint-Rambert. The 7,695 mD+ are spread across the entire route, with technical climbs and gravel descents where vigilance is required ⚠️. A total challenge for ultra-gravel lovers. 🏆
