The event in a few words

Put on your slippers... I mean your sneakers... because we're taking you to Marrakech 👟! Well, not really. We're actually taking you to the village of Lalla Takerkoust, not far from the cultural capital of Morocco! Sorry, we weren't very clear, but it's the view of the High Atlas mountain range that's got us perplexed. And it's not the Djebel Toubkal, located over 4,100 meters above sea level, that left us breathless (well, a little 🥵), but the breathtaking views await you with the contrast between the stony desert and snowy mountain 🏔. Does that make your mouth water? Come on, we'll tell you more about the Trail of Takerkoust, over a nice mint tea 🫖.

Trail of Morocco returns this time with the 7th edition of the Trail Takerkoust 💨. The organizers invite you to choose the event you want from a wide choice of circuits. 4 trails of 10 km, 21 km, or 42 km are offered, as well as a mini-trail of 3 km for children/juniors, the Kids Trail. The event takes place in Lalla Takerkoust village, in the Marrakech-Safi region, which has a lake of the same name, located less than an hour from Marrakech 🛶. With stunning views of the lake's shores, its dam, the arid desert surrounding it, and the snowy High Atlas (nicknamed "the roof of Morocco" 🛖), the races promise to be rich in atypical landscapes. You will then understand why the village is a favorite vacation spot for Marrakechs in need of some greenery 🌱. Moreover, this nature is largely preserved, notably thanks to the contribution of marathoners who collect several tons of waste annually in the area ♻. The trails are designed from already existing paths, the materials used are biodegradable, and the routes are continually cleaned to respect the sustainable ambitions of these nature lovers 💚. Proof that it is possible (and necessary!) to reconcile a love of outdoor sports and ecology!

The competition is open to everyone, from junior runners, trail enthusiasts to top marathoners for much more technical races. So get ready because the standout event of the trail, the Marathon of Takerkoust, includes no less than 1,300 mD+. However, the shortest trail, the 10 km, only includes 160. So there is something for everyone! And on that note, know that the competition also offers a social dimension to its participants! 💪 A donation collection is organized by the Trail Maroc association to be used in social actions 🙏.

After accomplishing your good deed and soaking your bib 🎽, you will then have all the leisure to indulge in your favorite activities, whether they are sports, cultural, historical, religious, or gastronomic. Indeed, the Marrakech-Safi region is the perfect blend between wild nature and urban dynamism. For example, you can continue on your path by enjoying one of the hiking trails of the High Atlas, take a horse 🐎, donkey or camel 🐪 ride and quad in the Agafay desert to observe the enchanted oasis. Canoeing, kayaking, golf... 🏌️‍♂️ Outdoor activities are plentiful and enthusiasts will be amazed by the richness of the local fauna of the Toubkal national park 🌵, home to gazelles, lynxes, leopards, jackals, mouflons, birds of prey 🦅. The flora is not left behind either, as you will observe during your races. And yes, you will be surprised by the great biodiversity of the region as you pass by eucalyptus forests or olive groves and visit the gardens of the Menara and the Majorelle 🌳.

So, if you're still not convinced, know that we have other arguments. One of them is called "tajine", the other, "couscous"... 🥘 Do you see what we're talking about? Your head must be in a souk 😏 with all this information. So we'll let you recover and we'll meet you under the sun of Marrakech next February, in the Medina of the city.

8 reasons to join this race

The contrasting landscapes 😍
You will never feel as small as when you stand before these high mountains, lost in the middle of your desert. What could be more exotic and disconcerting than this stark contrast between hot and cold, sand and snow, aridity and humidity? ❄🌞 But the stunning landscapes of the region are not limited to this, as the flora and fauna of the region also offer their share of surprises 😌. How about a small hike to discover this?
The high mountains nearby 🏔
Mmmh, it's so divine, this feeling of finally being able to breathe fresh air! If this is your thing, know that you will be satisfied as soon as you go to the High Atlas. Located in the Atlas mountain range that stretches from Morocco to Tunisia, via Algeria, the High Atlas includes the highest peak in North Africa: "the roof of Morocco" ☝. So if you need a boost of oxygen, you know where to go! 😊
The ecological commitment 🌳
Up to biodegradable materials, the Trail Takerkoust is completely focused on the planet and nature. The trails used by competitors follow paths used by animals, no polluting constructions are in place, and a waste collection is organized throughout the routes ♻. Last year, the organization managed to collect up to 5 tons of trash and they don't intend to stop there, because for them, outdoor sports go hand in hand with ecological responsibility 💪.
The social commitment 🤝
In addition to the evident ecological commitment of the race, the Trail du Maroc is also an association that aims to raise funds for cancer research, disability, and rare diseases or even for education 🎓. Donations can be made on the race's website, and also on-site. Each donation collected benefits from full transparency which allows you to know exactly how it was used. Isn't it beautiful the race, I mean, the love? 💛
The wide variety of races 🏃‍♂️
With no fewer than 4 trails, a children's/juniors' race, the choice is wide for you to find the event that suits you best. The competition deliberately offers races for all levels. Amateurs, beginners, experts, and pros will all find something fitting on the race's website 🥰.
A gastronomy that makes you want 🍽
Lamb and olive tajine, traditional couscous, pastilla... 🍲 The dishes to discover are abundant. Whether you are fond of oriental cuisine or not, you will inevitably be seduced by the traditional dishes and drinks of the ochre city 🫖. A great mix of flavors, colors, spices, and sweet-savory awaits you in one of the many gourmet restaurants in Lalla Takerkoust, by the lake, or in the former royal capital.
Cultural, artistic, and architectural richness 🇲🇦
From the statues of the artist Jalil visible at the entrance of Takerkoust to the Yves Saint Laurent museum in Marrakech, via the riads of the Medina, the region of Marrakech-Safi needs no further praise for its cultural richness 🤌. The red city, listed as a world heritage site, itself has countless historical monuments. You'll have the opportunity to discover ancient Berber villages buried in Toubkal National Park, the Koutoubia minaret, the lighthouse of Marrakech, the Rajal theater, and the palaces of the former royal capital 🕌.
The available activities 😛
During your wanderings, you'll get to enjoy the large quantity of activities to do and things to see. You could, for example, if you are a thrill-seeker, ride in a hot air balloon or parachute jump 🪂. If you are a city dweller, you can navigate between neighborhoods and transition from the picturesque authenticity of the Medina to the modernity of the Guéliz district. Lovers will enjoy carriage rides or sunny terraces while friends can hit nightclubs 🪩. Locals will reconnect with their roots by participating in traditional festivals where they can sing, dance, and eat to their heart's content 🕺.
