The event in a few words

“On the bridge of Avignon, we dance, we dance”… On the other side of the Rhône, we prefer to run there! 🎶 Facing the City of the Popes, Villeneuve-lès-Avignon looks its big neighbor straight in the eyes, while keeping its feet in the Gard, in Occitania, while Avignon belongs to Vaucluse and the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region 🌉. Lès or lez? Both spellings coexist and mean “near”: hard to better sum up this former royal town, positioned in the Middle Ages on the border between the Kingdom of France and the lands of the Empire, then of the popes 🧭. On a late-January Saturday evening, its alleyways come alive for a night race in the heart of the Rhône Valley winter 🔦. Weather-wise, count rather on a clear sky and a biting chill, with a likely guest: the mistral, which Provençal saying ranks among the three scourges of Provence alongside Parliament and the Durance 🌬️. Depending on its mood, it will push you from behind on the climbs… or remind you that a windbreaker is anything but a fashion accessory 🧥.

Here, no forest or singletrack: this urban trail weaves between cobbled lanes, small squares and exceptional monuments, illuminated at nightfall ✨. Starting from Place Charles David and its plane trees, the route climbs toward Mont Andaon, crowned by Fort Saint-André, whose ramparts you’ll walk with Avignon and the Palais des Papes below 🏰. Then it’s on to the medieval heart of the cardinals’ town: the Gothic cloister of the Notre-Dame collegiate church, the Tour Philippe-le-Bel, former guardian of access to the Pont Saint-Bénézet, or the Chapel of the Grey Penitents punctuate the course. The sawtooth profile alternates short sharp climbs, cobbled descents and surges: 60 m D+ on the 5 km, 180 m D+ on the 10 km and 400 m D+ on the 20 km 📈. Nothing insurmountable for a beginner, but sufficiently leg-breaking to warm up even the most chilly calves 🔥.

Launched in December 2019, the Urban Trail de Villeneuve lez Avignon quickly found its audience before settling into the heart of winter, in January 🗓️. Its concept can be captured in one image: a visit to the heritage by headlamp light, mandatory, with passages through places usually closed to the public 🗝️. The atmosphere is deliberately festive: the best costume is rewarded, a numbers challenge separates clubs who came in force, while the firefighters stationed in front of their station do not spare their encouragements 🚒. DJs have even set the pace along the route in past editions. The first editions supported the Villeneuve association Vertical Combat, which funds research into spinal cord injuries, at a rate of one euro donated per registration💛. On the participant side, the 5 km opens from the minimes category, the 10 km from cadets and the 20 km from juniors: teens, Sunday runners and seasoned trail runners share the same night adventure 🌙.

Arrive early: on Saturday morning, Place Charles David already hosts a weekly flea market 🧺. Bargain hunters in the morning, runners in the evening—the square doesn’t get a break! 😄 For your taste buds, the neighboring Tavel vineyard remains the only appellation in the Rhône Valley that produces only rosé. Pope Innocent VI, founder of the Chartreuse du Val-de-Bénédiction where he lies, already appreciated the wines of the right bank of the Rhône 🍷: a good excuse to come back and run the Tavel Nature Trail in autumn. For a sweet touch, cross the bridge and taste an papaline d'Avignon, a small chocolate thistle filled with oregano liqueur from the Comtat, to save for after the race 🍫. Avignon offers plenty to extend the weekend between the Palais des Papes, the largest Gothic building of the Middle Ages, and the four surviving arches of the Pont Saint-Bénézet, not to mention other playgrounds such as the Tour des Remparts de la Ville d'Avignon or the Nocturne des Papes 🏃. Farther west, the Nîmes Urban Trail extends the urban race season in the Gard 🏟️.

Headlamp strapped to your head, gloves on and calves warmed up: the Urban Trail de Villeneuve lez Avignon is just waiting for you to make Place Charles David echo with a vibrant Habemus finisher! 🙌

5 reasons to join this race

The cardinals’ heritage by headlamp 🕯️
In the 14th century, the popes’ settlement in Avignon led to fourteen palaces of cardinals and popes being built in Villeneuve 🏛️. Seven centuries later, the race turns this setting into an open-air museum to be explored at night: the Gothic cloister of the collegiate church, the ramparts of Fort Saint-André, the Tour Philippe-le-Bel… with passages through places usually closed to the public. The feeling of a private tour guaranteed 🤫.
The Palais des Papes in your sights 👀
Built by the Kings of France to assert their power across the other bank of the Rhône, Fort Saint-André now offers a prime viewing spot over Avignon 🔭. From its ramparts, you’ll overlook the river and the city lights, with the illuminated silhouette of the Palais des Papes as your focal point. A royal view, in the literal sense 👑, that makes you forget the elevation for a few strides.
Costumes and team spirit 🎭
The most beautiful costume of the evening leaves with a prize, as does the most represented club or team thanks to the numbers challenge 🏆. A cardinal in cassock, a Carthusian monk or a knight of Philip the Fair: local history offers plenty to inspire the most creative 😜. Add the cheers from the firefighters in front of their station, and the evening becomes as cultural as it is good-natured.
A finish buffet with flair 🦪
No question of heading home on an empty stomach: a festive buffet awaits all participants at the finish, on Place Charles David 🎊. In past editions, oysters, foie gras and salmon even made it onto the tables. Enough to celebrate your time like a New Year’s Eve party, a few weeks late 🥳.
From young teens to elevation junkies 📏
Three distances, three ways to experience the evening: a 5 km accessible from the minimes category, a hillier 10 km from cadets, and a 20 km with 400 m D+ reserved for juniors and above 💪. The perfect plan to bring teens, club buddies and seasoned trail runners into the same night, each at their own pace but all under the same winter sky ⭐.

A few more words

The flagship format of the evening offers 20 km and 400 mD+, i.e. more than double the elevation gain of the 10 km: a double loop seems likely. Climbs up to the Fort Saint-André, ramparts, cobbled alleys, the collegiate church cloister… each section is enjoyed twice, and the climbs bite more on the second lap 🥵. The cold sets in quickly once night has fallen, hence the value of an outfit that keeps you from getting chilled on the descents. A demanding race to manage like a true trail: start cautiously, save some energy for the last hills, and enjoy the final drop toward Place Charles David 🎯.
