The event in a few words

Happy birthday! 🥳

What? Not today? 🤔 But yes it is! Surprise—you didn’t know it, but you’re going to be showered with gifts very soon 🎁. In April, more precisely, on the occasion of the 9th edition of the Ultra Trail Amizmiz ! For this festive competition, we’re taking you to Morocco, to the small town of Amizmiz, located 55 km from beautiful Marrakech. Slip on your babouches... uh, your running shoes... because we’re offering you a competition where you’ll surely find just the right fit 👟. Several trail routes are available: 10 km (also doable as a walk), 20 km, 42 km, 62 km, and 90 km (also doable as a relay for 2). You’ll quickly see that the setting leaves nothing to be desired, since you’ll have the chance to run in the High Atlas mountain range, between a stone desert and snow-capped mountains 🏔. Making your mouth water? Come on then—let’s tell you more over a good mint tea 🫖.

Trail Maroc, which offers 4 competitions each year, is back at it with the 9th edition of the Ultra Trail Amizmiz  🏃‍♂️. The event takes place in the village of Amizmiz, in the Marrakech-Safi region, near the former royal capital, Marrakech 🇲🇦. With a breathtaking view of the arid desert and the snow-capped High Atlas (nicknamed “the roof of Morocco” 🛖), the upcoming races promise to be rich in unusual landscapes. What’s more, this nature is largely preserved, notably thanks to the contribution of the runners who pick up each year several tons of waste in the surrounding area ♻. The trails are laid out based on already existing routes, the materials used are biodegradable, and the courses are constantly cleaned to meet the sustainable ambitions of these nature lovers 💚. Proof that it’s possible (and necessary!) to reconcile a love of outdoor sport and ecology ! And what’s more, another sign that the organizers think of everything: the competition also offers its participants a social dimension ! Most of the funds will go to the victims of the terrible earthquake that hit Morocco in September 2023 and left many victims, injured people and those left homeless 🙏.

After doing your good deed and pinning on your bib, you’ll then be free to devote yourself to your favorite activities—whether sporting, cultural, historical, religious or gastronomic 🥳. Indeed, the Marrakech-Safi region is the perfect blend of wild nature and urban dynamism. You can, for example, keep the momentum going by enjoying one of the hiking trails in the High Atlas, take a horse, donkey or dromedary ride, and go quad biking in the Agafay Desert to observe its enchanting oasis 🤩. Canoeing, kayaking, golf... There’s no shortage of outdoor activities, and enthusiasts will be amazed by the richness of the local fauna of Toubkal National Park which is home to gazelles, lynx, leopards, jackals, mouflon, birds of prey 🦅. The flora is no slouch either, as you’ll be able to see during your races 🌳. Yes, you’ll be surprised by the region’s great biodiversity as you pass by the eucalyptus forest, olive groves, or visit the gardens of the Menara and Majorelle 🌵.

So if you’re still not convinced, know that we’ve got more arguments. One of them is called “tajine”, the other “couscous”... 🥘 You see what we mean? Your head must be in the souk 😏 with all this information. So we’ll let you catch your breath, and we’ll see you under the sun of Marrakech next April, in the city’s Medina . And if, unfortunately, you can’t take part in the competition, know that you can immediately dry your tears and start looking toward the Trail or Bike Takerkoust, the Trail Aurocher Oukaimeden, or the Trail or Bike Marrakech. All these competitions are also offered by Trail Maroc. They’re definitely full of good intentions! 🫶

9 reasons to join this race

The Amizmiz getaway 😮
Coming from so far away to do a trail? No! Doing trail running is a bit like going on a trip. Trail Maroc offers, for each of their trails, a one-day getaway 1 or 2 days before or after the event, allowing you to discover insanely beautiful nature spots🤪. And for this 9th edition you’ll be able to book a visit to the Yagour plateau, a little-visited area of the Toubkal, filled with rock engravings. This original hike in the High Atlas will take you through wild landscapes of great diversity: high valleys, passes, high-altitude plateaus, gorges, earth villages clinging to the mountainside, rivers and waterfalls 💦. So, does this little warm-up tempt you? 😏
A wide variety of races 🚴‍♀️
With no fewer than 5 trails, including one available as a relay and a hike, the choice is wide so you can find the event you like most. The competition deliberately offers races for all levels. Enthusiasts, beginners, experts and pros will all find what they’re looking for at the race site 🥰.
Environmental commitment 🌳
All the way down to biodegradable materials, the Amizmiz Trail is fully focused on the planet and nature 🌍. The trails used by competitors follow routes used by animals, the structures set up are non-polluting, and waste collection is implemented throughout the courses ♻️. Last year, the organization managed to collect several tons of trash and doesn’t plan to stop there, because for them, outdoor sport necessarily goes hand in hand with ecological responsibility 💪.
Social commitment 🤝
In addition to the race’s strong environmental commitment, Trail Maroc is also an association whose goal is to raise funds to support the victims of the earthquake that occurred in September 2023, as well as their families 👨‍👩‍👦‍👦. You can make a donation on the race website, but also on site. Every donation collected comes with full transparency, allowing you to know exactly what it was used for. Isn’t racing—uh, love—beautiful? 💛
Contrasting landscapes 😍
You’ll never feel as small as when you’re standing in front of these high mountains, lost in the middle of your desert. What could be more exotic and unsettling than such a stark contrast between hot and cold, sand and snow, aridity and humidity? 🌞 But the region’s stunning landscapes aren’t limited to that, because the local fauna and flora also offer their share of surprises 😌. How about a little hike to discover all that?
High mountains nearby 🏔
Mmmh, it’s so divine, that feeling of finally being able to breathe clean air! If that’s your thing, know that you’ll be delighted as soon as you head into the High Atlas. Located in the Atlas mountain range that stretches from Morocco to Tunisia, passing through Algeria, the High Atlas includes the highest summit in North Africa: “the roof of Morocco” ☝. So if you need an oxygen boost, you know where to go! 😊
Cultural, artistic and architectural richness 🇲🇦
From the Yves Saint Laurent Museum in Marrakech to the riads of the Medina, the Marrakech-Safi region no longer needs anyone to sing the praises of its cultural richness 🤌. The Red City, listed as a World Heritage site, can no longer even count the number of historic monuments that make it up. You’ll therefore have the chance to discover the old Berber villages buried in Toubkal National Park, the Koutoubia minaret, the Marrakech lighthouse, the Rajal theater and the palaces of the former royal capital 🕌.
A mouth-watering cuisine 🍽
Lamb and olive tajine, traditional couscous, pastilla... 🍲 There’s no shortage of dishes to discover. Whether you’re a fan of oriental cuisine or not, you’ll inevitably be won over by the traditional dishes and drinks of the Ochre City 🫖. A great mix of flavors, colors, spices and sweet-and-salty awaits you in one of the many typical restaurants in the village or in the former royal capital 👑.
Activities available 😛
During your wanderings, you’ll be led to enjoy the huge number of activities to do and things to see. You could, for example, if you’re into thrills, ride in a hot-air balloon or go skydiving 🪂. If you’re a city person, you can move between neighborhoods and go from the picturesque authenticity of the Medina to the modern vibe of the Guéliz district. Lovers will enjoy carriage rides or sunny terraces, while friends will head to nightclubs 🪩. Locals will reconnect with their roots by taking part in traditional festivities where they can sing, dance and eat as they please 🕺.

A few more words

The competition’s 90 km is an immersion toward the Holy Grail of trail running: ultras! 🥇 Well, unless you choose to do this race as a relay in pairs... In that case, you’ll be doubly lucky: first, you’ll run less, and then, you’ll suffer with someone 😂. But yes, you read that right—you can bring your teammate to come tread the desert and the mountains of the Atlas. The course is technical and grueling as it includes no less than 4,001 mD+ 😮‍💨. You’ll still be amazed by the splendor of the wild landscapes, the typical and picturesque villages and the color contrasts you’ll see 🌈. On the agenda: trails, vertical climbs, canyons, forests, lakes, Berber villages and more. A grand spectacle between land and sky, and between desert and vegetation 🏜🌲.
