“Burnt earth in the wind of the moors of...” 🎼
We're not here to sing the praises of Lake Connemara, but of the sublime Lac de Paladru, often compared to the lagoons of the Caribbean for its heavenly blue! 😍 With an area of 390 hectares, the lake will require good cardio to run around it 😈. But don't worry, there are enough courses for everyone to find their match! So, head to Isère, in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes 🏔️, in the heart of the Pays Voironnais, for the Trail du Lac de Paladru. Ideal for kicking off the trail season in April ☀️, this race is a must for fulfilling your future sporting goals 👀.
What a great opportunity to take part in a trail around a lake and discover the magnificent landscapes of the surrounding area! To give you your bearings, you'll be about 45 km from Grenoble and at an altitude of 492 m 👆, in the charming village of Montferrat, at the north of the Blue Lake (as the locals call it 😉), near the Chartreuse Massif 🍾. Don't forget the old adage: “in April, don't shed a thread”! Because even though running warms you up, the cool temperatures could be lurking 👀. We've described the setting and the temperature, but the most important part is missing: the courses. In total, several distances are offered, including one for kids 👧 and four for walkers:
Let's start gently with “La Montfrinoise” 🌆 at 12 km with 400 mD+, which kicks off the weekend on Friday evening. Follow up with “La Découverte” 🏔️ at 16 km with 390 mD+. Small is beautiful! You can also opt for the “Semi-Nocturne” 🌙 at 17 km and 740 mD+. Let's build up with “Les Hauts du Lac” at 32 km with 1,000 mD+. If you're even more motivated, we offer the “Grand Tour du Lac” at 55 km. With 2,000 mD+, its course is... leg-breaking! 😅 We've saved the most demanding for last: “L'Ultra Trail du Pays Voironnais” at 85 km with 3,200 mD+. Yes, it's tough, we know! But you can do it 😎.
You can also take on three stage races. Two of them begin with Saturday's 17 km "Semi-Nocturne" 🌕 and continue the next day with the 16 km or 32 km race 🤩. The third starts on Friday evening with the 12 km "La Montfrinoise", before moving on to the 17 km and then the 16 km 🔥.
Needless to say, you'll need to be tough and manage your body well 💪. For something more laid-back, you can also take part in one of the two hikes for walkers: “La Montagne” at 10 km and “Le Tour du Lac” at 20 km. Two timed Nordic walks round out Sunday's program: “Les Hauts de Paladru” at 16 km and “Découverte” at 11 km 🚶.
****In the Prealps, surrounded by rolling landscapes, you'll have plenty to enjoy! It's a human-scale event, with a balanced distribution of runners across each race 🏃♂️ and perfect for making the trails your own 👌. Most races start and finish at the Détente et Clapotis campsite, on the shore of the Lake 📍 — except for La Montfrinoise, which starts and finishes in the town center of Montferrat, and the Semi-Nocturne, which starts from the Charavines Tourist Office (shuttles mandatory from Montferrat) 🚐. So, watch out not to twist an ankle right at the start because of the sand! After that, your strides will take you on roads, dirt trails and gravel, surrounded by forests 🌳 and fields 🌾. Get ready for a feast for the eyes! You'll pass the Chapelle des 3 Croix, from where you'll have a superb view of Mont Blanc 🤩. You'll also go by the Pierre de Libre Soleil ☀️, one of the highest points in the area. Continuing with viewpoints: La Croix des Cochettes will cross your path (depending on the route you choose 😉). From there you'll see the lake like you've never seen it. Finally, you'll run on the grounds of the Château of the Clermont-Tonnerre Family 🏰, enriched by the remains of the Tour de Clermont, built in the 11th century. Isn't that chivalrous? 🤺
Speaking of “chivalrous”, did you know that this lake has a rather special history? 🤔 Lac de Paladru is the fifth largest natural lake of glacial origin in France! 🧊 It's also known for its incredible archaeological site, where remains from more than 1,000 years ago were discovered. They are now housed in a museum. In short, this site has a true cultural and historical heritage 📚 that you can discover all along your route, or after your race!
Once your Trail du Lac de Paladru is finished, a crazy atmosphere awaits you at the campsite 🏕️. A small village will be set up for the occasion, with showers available to you. On the program: Poke Bowl on Saturday evening 🥗, live bands 🎶 and plenty of activities 😋. As you can tell, the activities are very varied and suitable for the whole family 👨👩👧👦. You can even stay at the campsite, where a superb heated pool awaits you! And if you haven't had enough, before heading home, we suggest visiting the Lac de Paladru museum. It's worth it! To finish in style, don't forget to taste the famous ravioles du Dauphiné 🥟 and the Bleu du Vercors-Sassenage, with a good glass of Isère wine (always in moderation).
Go sign up for this race that sells dreams! 🤩
Message from the organizer:
"A family event, ideal for the start of the season. The Trail du Lac de Paladru is open to everyone and accessible to all levels regardless of age, experience and athletic ability, with hikes, Nordic walks and kids' races as well. Whether to set yourself a challenge, discover a long distance or prepare for future goals, the Trail du Lac de Paladru is the ideal event."
This is the most demanding format of the weekend, and also the most exclusive: only 50 bibs 🎟️. Three days, three starts, three atmospheres. On Friday evening, you kick things off with “La Montfrinoise”, a 12 km run from the center of Montferrat 🌆. On Saturday evening, you follow up with the Semi-Nocturne, a 17 km night run, headlamp on, starting from Charavines 🌙. And on Sunday morning, you close the loop with “La Découverte”, a 16 km run in broad daylight ☀️. A single price of €32 for all three stages: it's hard to get better value for a full trail weekend 💶.
Welcome to the arena of the most seasoned runners, where the true heroes of the Pays Voironnais are forged 🏔️.
This technical course starts at Lake Paladru, at the Camping Détente & Clapotis de Montferrat 🏕️. You'll start off gently, following the 32 km route to the Étang du Moulin 🚀. But after that, hang on tight! The mountains around Le Pin have a festival of climbs and descents in store for you between km 15 and km 30 💪. When you reach Oyeu at km 38, take a deep breath and enjoy the setting: you'll run alongside the Levatel pond before admiring the Thivoley ponds at km 47 ✨. What comes next? Head to Plambois at km 52, followed by a magical immersion in a forest for about 10 km 🌳. This section will bring you to the Fure, a tributary of the Morge 🌊, which you'll follow before launching into one last climb to Clermont 🏰, where a checkpoint awaits you at the Tower. Finally, the reward: an exhilarating descent to the finish line to complete this monumental challenge 🔥.
As for aid stations, you'll find 5 full ones (km 13, 26, 38, 55 and 69) plus a water point at km 79, with the rest run in semi-self-sufficiency 🎒. And don't forget your headlamp: the 6 a.m. start takes place in the dark, and many will finish after nightfall.
This course offers an XXL race for an unforgettable experience 🤩. Finisher, will you be up to the challenge? 💥
The 85 km course is tempting, but you'd rather share it? This relay format follows exactly the same route as the solo ultra, with the same 6:00 a.m. start at the Camping Détente & Clapotis in Montferrat 🏕️ and the same cut-off times 🤝. One registration and one payment for the whole team, and the bib is handed over along the way. The perfect opportunity to experience an ultra as a group, without taking it all on your own legs 😉.
Like the other races, you'll start from Lake Paladru, at the Camping Détente & Clapotis in Montferrat 🏕️.
This course shares the first 25 kilometers with the same route as the 32 km ☺️. But be careful: once you reach the Étang du Moulin, you'll take a fork toward Oyeu at kilometer 25 💥. The bonus? A breathtaking view over the Thivoley Ponds at kilometer 30 🚣. After that, you'll descend gently into the valley near Charavines, before a solid 2.5 km climb 🥵. Then, at kilometer 45, the final descent begins, bringing you in style to the finish line, right where it all began 🏁.
Plan to carry enough to get you between aid stations: 3 full aid stations (km 13, 25 and 38) and a water point at km 48, all on a semi-self-sufficiency basis. A checkpoint is also set up at the Tour de Clermont 🏰. The longest climb on the course peaks at 250 m D+.
Choosing this course means treating yourself to a double helping of fun 🤤. It's the perfect mix of performance 💪 and endurance 🌬️. You'll start with the 17 km half-night race 🌌 on Saturday evening, then follow up with the 32 km “Les Hauts du Lac” in broad daylight the next day 🌞. Rankings are based on the combined total of both times: an interim ranking is published after stage 1, but prizes are only awarded at the end of stage 2 🏆. We're certain this format will liven up your sporting weekend 🚀.
We know that all good things must come to an end, but stretching them over two days is even better, right? 🤗 With this stage race, you'll start with the 17 km half-distance night run 🌌 on Saturday evening and follow up with the 16 km "Discovery" run in broad daylight the next day. That way, if you were torn between running by day or by night, you've got the solution! 😎 Here again, the combined time of both stages determines the final ranking 🏆. We're sure this format will liven up your sporting weekend 🚀.
The start is at Paladru, at the “Détente et Clapotis” campsite in Montferrat 🏕️.
You'll tackle a 200 m D+ climb right away over 2.5 km. It's going to heat up, but the view will be worth the effort! 😍 Once you've come back down toward the Étang du Moulin, you'll arrive at Charavines at km 16. The real challenge begins after that, with a tough 240 m D+ climb between km 20 and 24 💪. But hang in there, because after that it's almost all downhill to the finish line 💨.
On the menu: 2 full aid stations (km 12 and km 20) and a water point at km 26, in semi-self-sufficiency. A checkpoint is set up at the Tour de Clermont 🏰, and the cut-off time is at the Plan aid station (km 20) after 3h45 of racing ⏱️.
Let's go! Grab your headlamp and head to Charavines for the start! 😉 Be careful, the start is not at the campsite: mandatory shuttles will take you from Montferrat to the Charavines Tourist Office, between 5:30 PM and 6:50 PM 🚐. The finish, on the other hand, is right at the Montferrat beach.
We hope you're in good shape, because an energetic climb of 200 mD+ awaits you right from kilometer 3 ⏫. You'll come back down, then tackle another climb up to the Chatelard motte-and-bailey castle ⛰️. The route then takes you toward the Château de Clermont 🏰, before gently but surely heading back toward Lake Paladru, at the “Détente et Clapotis” Campsite in Montferrat 🏕️. There's no light pollution here, and this intense adventure will unfold under the starry sky ⭐️ once night has fallen (if you're lucky with the weather) 🌌.
One important note: this race is run in total self-sufficiency, with no aid stations on the course 🎒. The longest climb is 240 mD+, and a cut-off time is set at the Bilieu checkpoint (km 11.1) after 1h55 of racing ⏱️.
Just imagining yourself running this half night race, and we already have stars in our eyes! 👀
Same course, same headlamp atmosphere under the stars, but as a pair 👯. The rule is simple: both teammates start together and cross the finish line together — no leaving your partner behind on the km 3 climb! Registration is done all at once with a single payment for the team, and spots are limited to 60 duos 🎟️. As with the solo format, it's total self-sufficiency: everyone manages their own water and food 🎒.
This race is the perfect format to get started! 🤓
You'll start from Lake Paladru, at the Camping Détente & Clapotis de Montferrat, with a first climb up the Côte Simandre (200 m D+ over 3 km) ⛰️. The descent to km 6 will let you recover before a final climb followed by a last descent where you can really let loose 💨.
There is just one full aid station, at km 7, and this is the only race besides the 12 km with no cut-off times: you can take your time 😌. As for gear, a cup is all you need.
It's an accessible loop but full of thrills, perfect if you're a beginner! 🎉
Poles in hand, get ready for a timed 16 km around the lake 🚶. The start is at 10:15 a.m. on Sunday from the Montferrat beach, right after the 16 km runners. A refreshment stop awaits you along the way, and the longest climb is around 190 m D+. Nordic walking poles are of course essential ⛰️.
She's the youngest of the bunch, and she kicks things off 🌆. While the other races meet up by the lake, “La Montfrinoise” starts from downtown Montferrat on Friday evening at 6:30 pm, and finishes back there, a village interlude in the middle of a very nature-focused weekend.
12 km, 400 m D+, with a main climb of about a hundred meters of elevation gain: it's short, it's lively, and it's run fully self-sufficient, with no aid stations and no time cut-off ⏱️. The only gear required is your cup 🥤.
The perfect format to get yourself a bib for just €8 at the first pricing tier, to loosen up your legs before a big weekend, or to make it the first stage of the three-part stage race 🔥.
The short version, to discover timed Nordic walking without losing the whole day 🚶. 11 km starting from Montferrat beach at 10:30 am on Sunday, with a main climb of about 200 m of elevation gain and a self-guided route. Remember your poles 💪.
