“La bohème, la bohème, that meant, we’re happy”... 🎶
So it’s our god of French song 🇫🇷, Charles Aznavour 🎤, who introduces this presentation of the Prague Marathon🏃♀️. "But why?", you wonder. Well, because Prague, the capital and largest city of the Czech Republic 🇨🇿, is located in Bohemia, a historic region of Central Europe ! 🇪🇺 Want another interesting fact? The race takes place in May, a period when running conditions are at their most optimal 🌞. So grab your sneakers and get ready to experience one of the most unforgettable sporting competitions of your life! 🔥
Expect to find several thousand runners in "the city of a hundred spires", if you decide to take part in this international event 🌍. Last year, there were more than 17,000 participants and more than 300 relay teams! 🤝 So you can imagine the atmosphere is completely wild! 🎉 Plenty of entertainment is planned all along the course with, as a backdrop, the maze of alleys that bears witness to the rich past of the city 🌇. On the agenda: a single flagship 👑 distance: 42.195 km, to be discovered solo, in a duo 🔗 or in a two-person relay. More than fifty different nationalities will come together for this increasingly popular marathon, especially since the arrival of the 1.6 km race, which attracts families ! 👦🏼
With both the start and finish at Old Town Square 👵, located in the heart of the Czech capital’s historic center📍, the loop will take you through Prague and along the banks of the Vltava 💦. The country’s longest river will be at the center of attention, since the route will often bring you to run alongside its banks. The race will notably let you cross the Charles Bridge, see St. Vitus Cathedral or even the Prague Castle 🏰. These masterpieces of medieval and Gothic architecture surely won’t leave you indifferent, nor will the fabulous gardens of the imposing imperial castle. A major historic site of old Europe, "the magical capital of Europe" 🧙♂️ (as André Breton 📝 wrote), will carry you through the different eras and cultures that have shaped the city, thanks to its grand monuments ✨.
The marathon course will also win you over thanks to its low elevation gain, despite the city’s rolling profile ⛰️. The race is accessible to all levels. Beginners and pros alike will find what they’re looking for, even if it will take a lot of courage and training 🏋️♀️ to beat the records of Alexander Mutiso (2 hours 5 minutes and 09 seconds) and Lonah Chemtai Salpeter (2 hours 19 minutes and 46 seconds)! 🥵 Despite the seemingly easy nature of the event, it’s still worth noting that 1.5 km of the route will take place on the cobblestones of the medieval center (watch your joints on that hard surface! 😮💨). Still, it’s worth it 🕯️, because you might just witness one of the most beautiful starts and one of the most beautiful finishes of your running career 😍. Alone 👤 (thanks to the marathon), with family 👨👩👧👦 (thanks to the kids’ races) or with friends (thanks to the relay races 🤝), you have the chance to enjoy an unforgettable experience!
We also recommend taking the opportunity to extend your weekend and add a few discoveries ✔️ to your collection (even if the race will already have gotten the job started 😜). Animal lovers 🦁 can head to the Prague Zoo, which covers 45 hectares and is home to around 4,600 animals. On the history side, you’ve got options too! Besides the monuments mentioned above, you can visit the Old Town Hall, which has the third-oldest medieval clock in the world 🕰️ and the only one still in operation. Looking for a typically Czech neighborhood? Lesser Town, as its name suggests, is one of the most picturesque parts of the city. Crossed by the old kings’ road 🤴, it is the historic soul of Prague. You’ll find shops 🛍️ and restaurants... 🍴 And that’s a good thing, because from a culinary standpoint, the country doesn’t fall short! In the Czech Republic, it’s customary to start with a good soup 🥣, especially goulash, a beef-based dish. svíčková na smetaně (bless you 😅) is another specialty, as is vepřoknedlozelo (only for hardy stomachs 😂).
Alright, we’re not tourist guides either 🙅. On the other hand, we are running specialists! And this time, you need to trust our pragmatism and believe us when we tell you: this race is a must-have! 🏆
Now then, if you want to be amazed, you’re in for a treat! 😉 The Prague Marathon 🇨🇿 course is iconic. The city itself is stunning, so you’ll get the chance to run in an incredible setting! 🤘
The start 🚩 will take place at Wenceslas Square, right below the imposing Prague National Museum 🖼️. Head towards the Legions Bridge, where you’ll cross the Vltava 💦 for the first time—the longest river in the whole Czech Republic. On this bridge, you’ll pass above the greenery of Střelecký Island Střelecký before reaching the West bank of the city 🌱.
Get ready to run a distance marked by lots of corners 📐. The first one comes before the second kilometer, then you’ll continue parallel to Petřínské sady, a magnificent park 🌳. You’ll tackle a gentle uphill incline that will lead you to one of the course highlights: the Charles Bridge 🌟. Before that, you’ll make your way along the cobblestone streets that lead to the Prague Castle 🏰. As early as km 3, you’ll be breathless—not because of the race, but because of the impressive medieval architecture and statues 🦇.
Next, you’ll cross the Mánes Bridge, before the last big turn that will let you enjoy a 4 km straightaway 🏃♂️ At km 8, you’ll go over the Libén Bridge, then head back down to your first solid aid station 🥕. You’ll then return to the city center and take in a bit of history as you pass through “ Josefov ”, Prague’s Jewish quarter Prague ✡️. You’ll climb back up to the second highlight of this race, the Old Town Square! ✨ You’ll be nearing the third water point 💧 when you pass by the start again. From there, you’ll head out for another loop!
You’ll already be at your 15th kilometer when you begin the second part of the Prague Marathon 🌃. This section starts in the south of the city, taking you over the Jiráskův Bridge. You’ll find your second solid aid station 🧀 before the Palacky Bridge. Yes, that’s a lot of bridges! 🌁 But that’s exactly where all the charm of the race lies! Heading down, you’ll start to move a bit away from the quays and dive into the urban landscape of Prague 🏘️. Turnaround at km 19, where you’ll keep heading south for 3 km before climbing back up to the Palaky Bridge. After crossing it, you’ll set course north, just like on your first loop, to cover the final kilometers of the Prague Marathon. Then it will be time to head back down to the finish line! 🏁
So, ready to push yourself through this extraordinary course? 💪
So, you feel like running the Prague Marathon as a relay ? 🤝 You’re absolutely right—it's clearly the ideal course to share with a partner!
Same route as the solo race, except that for your team, it will be split into two parts. The first runner will cover the first 21 km to the south of Prague after crossing the Palacký Bridge and heading into the arteries of the city. The second runner, meanwhile, will wait for the handover in the Podolí 🖍️ neighborhood. Once the exchange is done, the second runner will cover the remaining 21 km, crossing 3 different bridges. They will see Charles Bridge, and go through the city center before finishing the race at Wenceslas Square ! 😅
