Marathon de Vienne
The Vienna Marathon 🇦🇹 takes place in the heart of the capital of Austria. Organized since 1984, it is the most famous in the country, with no less than 30,000 runners from over 40 different countries 🌎. The capital organizes no less than 5 trials over two days! 😱 On Saturday, the city's streets will host the 5 km as well as the junior and children races. On Sunday, there will be the half-marathon, relay marathon, and classic marathon. This race is one of the best on a European level. Its easy and flat road course is perfect for beginners! The temperatures are expected to be quite cool 🥶, but if you're lucky, it won't rain. Bring your K-way, you never know! ☔️
The trials animate the city all weekend! 🎉 Locals are present for all races to cheer on the runners! 👏 The program includes: signs, fanfares, and much more... 🎶 Along the route, you can see music groups 🥁. If you're not in a hurry, why not join in the fun? 😏 What better way to accompany these festivities than with a glass of Austria's most popular beer, Gösser 🍺 (to be consumed in moderation)! To relax after the race, you can enjoy the terrace of the famous Sacher Hotel 🏨. You can savor its iconic Sachertorte, the famous Viennese chocolate and apricot cake! 😋 Enjoy the moment, because the recipe is secret 🤫, only a handful of the hotel's pastry chefs know it! During your weekend, we strongly encourage you to put on your sneakers 👟. This time, it's to explore the city 🏙️. Vienna is a capital filled with history! 📖 If you plan ahead, you might be able to attend a concert at the city's famous Opera 🎤. You can also blend in with the tourists by visiting the Schönbrunn Palace, Austria's most visited attraction 🏰.
This year again, the 5 km is for a charitable purpose. €5 from each adult registration will be donated to "Run for a Tree". Last year, thanks to the participations, a new green space was created in the heart of the city 🌳. The junior and children races are also for a charitable purpose. Since 2019, €2 from each participation have been donated to support the "Jeder Meter zählt" by SOS-Kinderdorf 👨👧👦. In 42 editions, 2019 is, so far, the most memorable! More than 40,000 runners from 125 different nationalities ran on Austrian soil 🏃.
We count on you to do even better this year! 💪
Do you want to know more about the marathon route? It's here 👇
The start will be at 9 am 🕘, in several waves, on Wagramer Straße, near the United Nations Office 🌍. You will cross the Danube on the Reichsbrücke towards the historic city center. You will pass through the great Prater park 🌳, this is the part of the course chosen by Eliud Kipchoge to go under the 2-hour mark! 🏃♂️ You'll then run along the Danube for 3 km. Afterward, you will pass the famous Vienna State Opera, one of the best in the world! 🤯 You will continue your journey for 4 km to reach the Schönbrunn Palace 🏰. After 2 km, you will cross the city's most famous shopping street, the Mariahilfer Straße. On your way, you'll have the opportunity to see some of the most impressive buildings, such as the University and the Parliament! You will then finish your race on the Ringstraße to complete the 42 km in front of the Burgtheater. A little further on, you can see the famous Town Hall.
For the relay marathon, the route is exactly the same 🤓. The key thing to remember is the baton passing points 🎽. They will take place at three different locations:
- km 15.5: Linke Wienzeile / Schönbrunn
- km 24.1: Brigittenauer Lände / Donaukanal
- km 30.8: Maiereistraße / Stadion
As you might guess, the four team members will not be covering the same distances! The first runner will cover 15.5 km, the second 8.6 km, the third 6.7 km, and the last one will cross the finish line after running 11.395 km.
Want to know the route for the half-marathon ? It's right here 👇.
The start is also at 9 AM 🕘, on Wagramer Straße, near the United Nations Office 🇺🇳. You'll take the Reichsbrücke to cross the Danube. Once on the other side of the riverbank, you'll pass through the great Prater park 🌳. For 3 km, you'll walk along the Danube to reach the historic city center. After 21 km, you'll arrive in front of the Burgtheater, facing the famous Vienna City Hall 🇦🇹. The half-marathon route matches half the course of the marathon 🤔.
Are you interested in trying the 5 km running or walking 👇.
The 5 km forms a loop in the old town 👴. It follows the route of the Ringstrasse, which encircles the historic city center. The start is at 6:15 PM, at Schottentor, near the University. You will head initially towards the Danube and follow it for 1 km. Then you will turn to run towards the Opera 🎤. From that point, you will only have one kilometer left ☝️.
