La dolce vita!

Wondering how to wolf down 4 calzones, 8 slices of tiramisu and half a dozen arancini without feeling guilty? 😳 Italy is the perfect excuse for you. The tricolour country is a dream playground for smashing a crazy 21.0975 km while testing local specialties 🍽️. Forget boring shake-outs; here we run on strong espresso and race under the Mediterranean sun.

Less hot and more hilly than in Spain, Italy is a country where life is good. You can feel it in the locals’ attitude, in the gastronomy and in the pace of life. It’s not French bistronomy, but we’re getting close to culinary excellence ✅. We like to say it: that’s the definition of the Dolce Vita. Between historic monuments, grand lakes and a festive atmosphere, get ready to experience a legendary race. Andiamo! 🛵

If for you Italy rhymes with Ferrari, know that Italian courses are perfect for smashing your PR. The asphalt is almost tailor-made so you can let your stride flow all the way to the finish 🏁. At the speed of a racing car, leave your rivals in the rear-view mirror and heat up the tires on these super fast, rolling routes 🏎️. The first race course we recommend is the Half Marathon of Roma-Ostia. In three words, it’s: the Italian classic! The start is in the southern districts of Rome, then you head straight for the Tyrrhenian Sea 🪼. A route with a few turns during the first 8 kilometers, but completely straight once you reach km 10 📏. The slight elevation gain will give you a hard time, but luckily the finish is a gentle downhill, ideal for feeling like you’ve got wings 🪽. Sea air in your nostrils and the seafront in your sights, it’s time to give it everything. 🌊 Closer to the borders with Switzerland and France, the Milan Half Marathon is also held every year (or Stramilano Half Marathon, its real name) 🛍️. This Lombard race starts in the fashion capital for an out-and-back that will show you the most beautiful monuments in the city center. That way, if you couldn’t take in all the moldings on the first pass, you’ve got the return trip to enjoy them 🔄. What’s more, the profile here is as flat as a margherita pizza. Finally, the Naples Half Marathon in the Campania region is also a benchmark in the genre 🏃. Set under the watchful eye of Vesuvius, this course is reputed to be one of the fastest in Europe. Speed lovers will get their fill 😎.

Running is good, but running while getting a feast for the eyes is better 🤩. Italy is an open-air museum, and some half marathons are so beautiful you might forget about the clock. But you’ll need to stay focused to conquer the mythical distance of 21.0975 km 🎯. For heritage, we recommend the Florence Half Marathon in Tuscany. Remember to lift your head high and keep your eyes wide open 👀. You’ll run among Renaissance masterpieces, pass in front of the Duomo and cross the Arno: guaranteed chills 🥶. Another legendary place is in Veneto, and saw one of the world’s most famous love stories written: Verona 💔. The local half marathon even bears the name: the Romeo & Gulietta Half Marathon. If you haven’t already, chances are you’ll fall in love with running there. The triumphant finish takes place in the mythical Verona Arena and is worth every ache and pain in the world 🙌. And if you’re still not convinced, set your course for Palermo, in the far south of the country. Between palm trees 🌴, Arab-Norman architecture and Mediterranean warmth, Sicily offers you a totally exotic race 🌅. The Palermo Half Marathon will show you every color—but above all, every flavor. Arancini, sfincione and pasta alla norma will satisfy your overflowing appetite 🤤.

If you prefer the tranquility of grand landscapes to the hubbub of city centers, the different Italian regions also have plenty to surprise you 📣. In Piedmont, the Lago Maggiore Half Marathon (Lake Maggiore Half Marathon 🇫🇷) is one of the most panoramic events in the discipline in the world. You run along the shores of Lake Maggiore with the Alps covered in snow as a backdrop ❄️. You’ll be swept away by the scenery and you’ll almost regret not running the marathon 😭. Much farther south and in a different style, the Sorrento-Positano Half Marathon sets off for 21 km of hills and asphalt. But hold tight and lace up your shoes—the climbs are going to sting! 👟 Luckily, the plunging view over the sea and the cliffs will bring your smile back. A real trail on asphalt for runners with a strong stomach 🍋.

So, young runner or old sea dog ready for a fight, there’s something for everyone in Italy! 🇮🇹
